I have an old Remington 700 SPS in 30-06 that I think will work fine for most of what I need it for. Looking to upgrade/add a second gun. I think 300WM might be the sweet spot on getting a bit more energy for larger game. What kind of rifles should I start with?

Older Remington 700 or 40x are outstanding rifles. You can't do better. But as some have said the ones made after the takeover are spotty.

Have you thought about a lever action? Marlin (pre Remington), Winchester , Henry all have great ones.
