This garment offers enough warmth for those in-between-season days and is available for a fraction of the cost of its top-performing synthetic competitors. It also has durable features such as flatlock seams and thumb loops that give us confidence this layer will be around for many seasons to come. 
We were disappointed by the synthetic polyester blended fabric, as we noticed it retained odor almost immediately. And while the fabric successfully wicked moisture and sweat away from our skin, this layer couldn't efficiently release moisture through the tightly woven fabric, so it took longer to dry. This sometimes would mean sacrificing precious warmth during colder temps, so we do not recommend this layer for high output activities nor for the depths of winter. Overall, our testers were happy with the slim-fitting, durable design that kept us warm during the shoulder seasons or as the base of our layering system for moderately cold weather adventures.

 Heavyweight baselayers are for anyone who runs really cold, wants a layer that provides more warmth than breathability, or doesn’t want a very active baselayer. Keep in mind that baselayers are meant to be worn continuously, so if you get a heavyweight layer don’t expect to hike uphill for hours and remain sweat-free. A midweight baselayer will give you enough warmth when a biting cold comes, but will get you through that hike with a lot less sweat. Finally, remember that a baselayer is not your entire system of warmth — it is the first layer in the system

 While it’s only available for women, we find it to be a good example of what’s possible in the casual baselayer market. The Kari Traa Lokke is a nord-inspired design made of merino wool. It fits close to the skin, but because it’s so warm, it functions as a light sweater, too. There are reports of the Lokke running a bit small across the chest, so make sure to order a size up if necessary

 A midweight baselayer will give you enough warmth when a biting cold comes, but will get you through that hike with a lot less sweat. Finally, remember that a baselayer is not your entire system of warmth — it is the first layer in the system. A midlayer often provides most of the warmth, whether it be a fleece, vest, or down jacket. The Winter Guide to Baselayers

All of REI Co-op’s Midweight base layers have a striated or heathered pattern — which I love. Both men’s and women’s come in a few color options, and the light pattern gives the base layers a nicer look (as opposed to some solid color sets I have, which are a much plainer long-john style). In essence, if I needed to strip down to change out layers or anything else, I’m proud to rock these.

Look, sometimes in winter you just want to get dressed and get on with it. If I have a full day outside planned, am going skiing, or, say, dreading my walk to work when it’s snowing, I’ll grab this base layer top. This top fits great and offers warmth, stretch, and good coverage from my neck down to my core.

Like any full-length pant, if you’re below average height, you may find the pants run long. Bonus: For women, the bottoms come in petite sizes for just that reason! But otherwise, several of our staff (of different heights and sizes) liked the fit of these bottoms. And the waist does have a fair amount of elastic stretch, so you can wear it on your hips or higher up depending on your preference.
