I live in a car-dependent suburb, and I'm looking to get a bike for commuting. Bicycles are illegal to ride on the sidewalk here unless the wheels are 20 inches or less, so I need a bicycle with 20 inch wheels at most. I want it to be an electric bike that assists me so if I needed to I could get to and from wider distances. I don't need it to be very fast.

I want the following features:

1. It needs to have a large rack. I plan to use this as my main means of transporting food and supplies when I go to the grocery store. I currently take the bus. Ideally it might even have both front and back racks, though I have heard it is harder to control a bike with a front rack.

2. Folding, if possible. I'd like to store it in my office instead of on a rack. 

3. Good warranty and customer service. I am conscious that local bicycle shops can't exactly repair a damaged motor.

4. I'd lean towards having better range and better assist over lower weight. 

5. I'd love integrated safety lights. I will probably end up sharing the road with cars, and this is a suburb. 



I don't know very much about electric bikes, so if I missed something important let me know. I could even go for a tricycle if one had a good price. I have checked the local used market but electric bikes with small wheels are naturally quite scarce here. 

Here is information that might help with the recommendation:

1. My commute is 6 minutes by car. About 4 miles, I'd say, but it's quite hilly terrain. My commute may increase dramatically if I buy a house further out, but I'd expect to be no more than 7 miles from my work. 

2. I don't plan to go off-road. It's often snowy and wet here. 

3. It needs to accomodate someone of height 5'4". I'm not a very tall person. I weigh maybe 120 pounds.

4. I'm an inexperienced biker. Though I bike to work, that's the only context in which I bike. 

5. I can spend quite a bit on an electric bike. I'd say my max budget is $3000. I'd prefer a good value over a nice-to-haves. A bicycle is just a tool to me.

Which 20' wheel electrical bike should I buy?

So my “step” Dad bought a bike a month or so ago and is unable to ride it. He’s a Vietnam airborn vet and then went on to be a mail carrier for 40 years. He can’t bend his knees to get over the bike. He’s retired and wanted something he could take to go fishing.

I’ve rode the bike he bought and I think I’m the only one who has. So I think I’m going to buy him a step through and trade him. 

Priority number one is him being able to get on the bike. 

Priority number two is him being able to take a few poles, his tackle, and maybe a bucket. 

Could you guys give me a few suggestions and post some of the setups you take fishing?
