 The Refuge Air is a pretty simple and streamlined full zip hooded jacket, but it does have a few really smart features. It's got two zippered hand pockets as well as a small chest pocket for essentials like lip balm or gels. The thumb loops help to keep the jacket situated and keep out the wind. Elastic binding around the cuffs and a draw cord hem also help to retain warmth

Outdoor Research Women's Refuge Air Hooded Jacket

This jacket offers great value as an active insulator. It will beat fleece in warmth and weight, and while it may lose to other high-end synthetic insulators on those two, it will still win in breathability and price - this makes it a great pick for someone looking for an insulated midlayer that can be used in active pursuits. In those regards, the refuge air is a great success. However, for me, the sizing simply didn't work

I had both a small and a medium - the small, which fit mostly, was too narrow in the shoulders to the point where it constricted any arm movements when my arms were raised (not great if you plan on using this jacket climbing). The waist as well maxed out around 31-32 inches which makes it hard to zip up the jacket outside your pants if you are wearing it casually (not as big a problem as the shoulders but worth noting still)

 I find it to be quite breathable and quick drying, blocks just enough wind, provides great warmth without over heating. It's easily my favorite layer. The greatest downside is the fit. The medium body fits well, however, it's sleeves are short by a few inches and it could use some more space across the shoulders

 Tiny little zippers. It's lighter weight than a lot of other jackets we do test and I have those specs below. So there it is. That's our overview of the Outdoor Research Refuge Air Hooded Jacket Active Installation Piece

 So for mountain biking or for cold-temperature trail running or hiking or backcountry skiing a split board is what I would primarily use this for, that's my jam. And it's also a very active fit, a very trim fit. So for reference I'm 6'1", 210 pounds, 45 inch chest, 303 inch waist, 36, 37 on the arms. And this is an extra large

 Has DWR coating so you won't wet out. It blocks wind very well as well. So for mountain biking or for cold-temperature trail running or hiking or backcountry skiing a split board is what I would primarily use this for, that's my jam. And it's also a very active fit, a very trim fit

 So if you're a climber and you're a little bit more svelte this will fit you fantastically. So 95% of you this will fit you better than it fits me for reference. So some of the features I like about it, of course you have the pocket up here, that's where I would keep chapstick or a small cell phone. I don't think you can fit your big cell phone in there

Surprisingly warm

 Going one size up wouldn't be terrible. The cuffs are rather loose, which is not ideal for keeping out cold air. Overall, this is a quality build, does what it's supposed to do and fits relatively well.

This is a solid midlayer. It's quite warm, does a good job of blocking the wind and will shed water from a light rain. The jacket isn't too bulky so it's ideal for layering. The fit is slightly snug compared to other OR items
