That's a beginner question. I'm in a quest for the best set up and I'm also getting into ultralight gear. I knew that choosing a sleeping bag, a mat and a bivy is pretty effort-demanding but I didn't suspect finding a tarp to be as hard.

I looked up for reviews etc. and wasn't expecting so much prices difference between the aliexpress version and specialised stores. What is a good tarp ? What motivates spending 200 bucks on a piece of fabric ? Should I ? And, finally, is there any resonably-priced trustworthy and lightweight alternative ?

I have a Space Blanket as footprint and thought about just buying another one as tarp. I know that it's noisy but I don't really care. I thinking about doing that but I'd like to read some skilled advices / opinion.

Edit : I should precise that I don&#39;t use terkking poles. As I&#39;ll be doing photography And video shooting, I might however have a monopod with me.

Budget lightweight tarp ?

Site selection, right? Well...

This past weekend I took the plunge into tarp land, and went out to Joshua Tree for a 3 day shakedown hike. I brought my new Borah 9x7 tarp and bivy, no experience but full of confidence.

The first night was going great, up until my tarp collapsed at 3:30 am during some sleet storm. The sandy soil had proven a challenge with the stakes, and it was windy even though I had a good spot. On the second day, I swore I'd find an even more protected spot! Unfortunately, where I'd planned to stop [had zero cover](https://i.imgur.com/qRTPqdq.jpeg) so I pressed for a few more miles... but [found absolutely no protection](https://i.imgur.com/68cG9TK.jpeg). My map showed I wasn't close to getting out of this wind tunnel, and with darkness imminent and ominous clouds overhead, I decided to stop and set up (chose an A frame pitch very low to the ground). Unfortunately, there was a constant 15-20 mph wind with gusts up to 50+ mph all night long! At least part of my tarp collapsed every hour all night, despite staking all 10 tie outs and using the big rock/little rock method for stake strength. Ended up getting only 2h of sleep.

Any advice for situations like these, where little-to-no cover can be found and the wind is constantly violent? I would have taken it down and just used my bivy + quilt for shelter, but was worried about a sudden storm. Worst-case scenario I could have packed up and hiked on, but was wondering if I was missing anything obvious.
