However, don’t mistake these Kahtoola spikes for true mountaineering crampons. They’re an excellent choice for days when microspikes aren’t enough, but these aren’t designed for technical ascents or ice climbing. In particular, the adjustment system—including plastic buckles and basic fabric straps—is much less robust and won’t stand up well to more demanding and vertical alpine pursuits, and it’s not built to accommodate mountaineering boots (automatic crampons have wire toe bails and heel clips for more secure attachment). However, for low- to medium-grade backcountry ascents that don’t quite warrant the use of a true crampon, the KTS Hiking Crampons are a lighter (albeit still pricey) alternative and a nice compromise.  The crampons compress so that both fit together in the orange Black Diamond Crampon Bag. Until I bought the bag I was successful pointing the spikes toward each other and wrapping them in cloth to keep the spikes out of gear they were not intended for.

I bought these to address some steep icy sections on a favorite trail which they worked well for. However I also found they do well on steep soft snow sections both climbing and plunge stepping and they also provide more confidence in traversing steep snow sections (though not unlimited!). They are a hazard on mixed rock/snow (too tall) and overkill on moderate grades and they don't work for trail running so I still carry micro-spikes for this. But getting a good grip on steep snow or exposed traverses has stepped up my enjoyment enough that I don't mind carrying both

I wear size 9 Oboz Bridgers (low and mid-boots) and the S/M just fits at the largest setting. If I had the option I would have bought both S/M and M/L to see which would allow the best adjustment for my current and possible larger boots but the S/M is perfect for my current boots. The local sales staff was not familiar with crampons designed for hiking boots -- most crampons are designed only for mountaineering boots -- so you may need to explore the Kahtoola website for information before making a purchase decision. But these are the real deal designed very well for regular hiking boots

Helpful on ice as well as steep soft snow sections

  Fitting the crampons to our boots was quite easy, and putting the crampons on the day of our hike was also straightforward.  

We camped overnight at around 11,000’, and there was deep snow from below our campsite all the way to the summit.  The slopes ranged from flat at the beginning to a 70+ degree incline closer to the summit.  The crampons were excellent: they stayed tight and on our boots the entire time, and they provided great grip on all the various angles of slope.  The accompanying silicone anti-balling plates did a great job as well, and neither of us had any issues with snow clumping on the bottom of the crampons

I do not need mountainering crampons.   These are great for hiking and working on a snowy slope. They are just right for what I am doing.

 I pull that binding tight, and it stays tight all day long.  It is very important that they stay tight on the slopes. I am using them with insulated leather hunting/work boots.

  They are super flexible, lightweight, and form fitting to footwear. It feel like you aren't wearing crampons at all. The 1" teeth make you feel invincible on even the hardest ice.  So far I have used them half a dozen times

 Totally replacing both my Microspikes as well as my Hilllsound Crampons (which were WAAAY too rigid for anything other than a thick boot). I got a carrying bag for them separately as well.  They are super flexible, lightweight, and form fitting to footwear. It feel like you aren't wearing crampons at all

 They have never let me down and do not show any signs of failing. One of the best gear purchases I have made. They are lightweight, easy to put on and comfortable. If you you are looking for hiking crampons for serious terrain then I recommend these, the Kahtoola KTS, you will not be sorry

RecommendationIf you use trail runners exclusively for hiking or peakbagging in winter, then it probably makes sense to invest in a pair of Kahtoola KTS Crampons. Although they are expensive, they are quite comfortable to wear and provide very good traction for soft soled shoes. If you wear different shoes in winter, you need to decide if it’s worth having different traction systems or if you want one traction system for all of them. If you decide to purchase just one winter traction system, I’d try a few more alternatives before deciding to use KTS crampons with multiple styles of shoes or boots
