Winter runners require reliable and confidence-inspiring grip for moving quickly over slippery terrain, and Kahtoola’s NANOspikes are well-suited for the job. Despite the name, the NANOspikes utilize 10 shallow tungsten carbide studs underfoot rather than true spikes, which helps them bite into frozen-over pavement and other flat, icy surfaces. To aid in preventing slippage, the TPU toe bail also keeps the toe nicely in place to minimize unwanted play at the front, and the large rubber platform underfoot maximizes contact with the ground. We’ve worn the NANOspikes immediately after freezing rainstorms in the Pacific Northwest and have been consistently impressed by how well they dig into slick ground.

That said, it’s important to clarify that the NANOspikes are not grippy enough to take into steeper and more unpredictable terrain. They can handle undulating and hilly city streets and sidewalks, but they struggle on rocky and rougher surfaces typical of many trail networks. And while the aforementioned rubber section at the bottom does help with staying connected to the ground, it also means you lose out on some grip in fresh snow. Finally, our pair is starting to show considerable wear, although we’ve gotten a few solid years of use out of them. I’m currently running with Kahtoola nanospikes on snow covered dirt roads. Plowing is iffy so sometimes there’s quite a bit of snow to trudge through. The nanospikes are good insurance for slips and falls but don’t seem to be quite enough for deeper packed snow. Should I go up to microspikes or maybe some sort of snow shoes?

Great for Level surfaces..  Steep hills not so much.

For traction - on road, I usually don't need to beef up my traction from my non-winter shoe.  For trail, I have a pair of shoes that I've added screws to, and I also have a pair of Kahtoola NanoSpikes and a pair of Kahtoola MicroSpikes - I chose which of these three I use depending on the trail conditions.

Winter running

If the conditions are snow (esp. packed down), I like my IceBugs. For snowy/icy/pavement, I like my Kahtoola nanoSPIKES.

Hopefully it's ok to post this here, I just wanted to get recommendations for winter running shoes. I'm gonna be running in an area that snows much more often this winter. I've heard trail shoes are the best bet for roads with snow. Currently I'm using Brooks Ghost 14 and they're probably my 2nd favorite ever, but the Nike Pegasus 35 was so so so good. The one shoe where I barely ever felt non-fatigue related pain. Anyway I was thinking Brooks Divide 2 but wanted to see some thoughts

Running Shoes for Winter

Better than nothing.  If you are trail running on varied terrain that includes snow and mud, get something with better traction and fit.

a) As I'm running the the spikes slide around around the toe area so that they are no longer centered, crushing my toe.

I have tried to pull the spikes on as much as possible on my shoes so as to minimize the movement, but it always goes back.

b) As this moves, the rubbery strip at spanning the toe sometimes rotates, crushing my toes further.

- These spikes would be great if a) they rubbery part wasn't so pliant b) they didn't have that strange extra strip of rubber spanning the toe.

 When I did I felt immediate discomfort particularly at the toe area where the metal piece at the top was digging in. I wanted to like these but had to send them back. I opted to look at other options before trying a size up.

 So, despite being on a frozen lake, I can literally stop on a dime (same with the DueNorth as spikes are the same). So I do like these a little better. Could be refined a slight bit to correct the subtle issues I noted so 4 instead of five is appropriate. Oh - the models with the small spikes help on snowy terrain some but ice is where they are most helpful
