The BK62 represents a direct link to the forefather of American Woodcraft, Mr. Horace Depart himself. His tome Camping and Woodcraft (first published in 1906) is still required reading for modern bush crafters and outdoorsmen. Ethan Becker owns the only known original 5" Depart Knife still in existence, a blade that spawned an entire genre of knives, and the BK62 is as close as you can get in a production knife, executed brilliantly by the craftsmen at KA-BAR. The 5" spear point blade is a bush craft classic thanks to its versatility. This was the knife Depart designed and used to do everything. . . from wood carving to skinning to food prep and everything in between. The edge itself comes all the way back to the handle scales, ensuring maximum utility. There is enough length to do big jobs, but the blade is still nimble and eager to move. The full flat grind makes it a terrific slicer and works well for virtually any task imaginable. A slight sedge at the spine makes the blade more efficient by reducing drag when cutting through soft or fibrous materials such as vines or large game. KA-BAR's fantastic 1095CV steel works great in the field, with plenty of toughness and edge retention. It lacks a coating, but the stonewashed finish offers a modicum the corrosion resistance (although it will still patina) for the steel, as well as minimizes the appearance of scratches after years of service. The handles are bolt-on in typical Becker fashion, but the scales are made of walnut wood for a classic look and warm feel. The handles are slim but hand filling, and a swell at the front enables excellent purchase for pinch grips and when choking up for fine work. A tapered tang makes for perfect composure, with the balance point hitting right at the index finger. Also included is a period accurate brown leather sheath for easy and secure carry. What worked 100 years ago still works today. The BK62 is a versatile blade that will find its way into the kit of campers, hikers and bush crafters alike. Many of the copies of the Kephart are based on the one at Western North Carolina University because it was the only one anybody knew about, and it doesn't look like this anymore because it was sharpened to death. But this one is based off the only known example

He was most influential outdoor writer of his period and he conglomerated what he knew into this book, which is the book of camping and wood craft, and almost any question that you have still a hundred and plus years later can be answered in here and a few Years ago, or a year or so ago, a good friend of mine came into possession of the only known, kept heart designed knife that was not in the museum at Western North Carolina University, which is where kept arts stuff is, and I was resistant because I'm essentially Cheap and wasn't sure I wanted to spend that much money on a knife and then my good friend Mark Zaleski, who runs knife magazine, brought it down here and let me cut something with it and when I first had it and I cut something with it, I Went damn a hundred years never been sharpened and it wants to cut and the reason I got excited over this rather unprepossessing looking knife is the subtleties in this blade are incredible, and I've always felt that a flat relatively flat handle gave the best way of figuring Out how to index index the blade so that you know exactly where the blade is, and it's rounded without being flashy was hand. They were handmade at the coal cluster Brothers Factory in Pennsylvania, but it's a doubly convex blade without a nice tapered tang and it feels live in your hand. It has a great feel great balance and it just works

This is the K bar iteration of the iconic Kephart knife, and they have been very careful to do virtually as good a job as get it as close as possible, as anybody can get to a knife that was in production hand forged one by one in a Fairly primitive manufacturing facility, where people were still pounding them out with a hammer, and it has as a nice relief at the top it's full height, full height ground, which gives it a very slight Remender mount of slice. It has a slightly tapered Tang, just like the original, which helps for the balance

KA-BAR Becker BK62 Kephart Knife

 The spear point is a cool design, but sometimes I take it out without looking and start cutting with the wrong side, which places my thumb directly on the sharpened side. The shape of the blade is nuanced and complex, more so than other Kephart replicas on the market, so that part is nice.  Overall a nice blade. If it was a long-term actual survival situation I’d pick a more easy-going steel, but this is fun to play with on a camping trip

 At least the flaws are symmetrical? *shrugs*  Mine didn't come with a sharp edge. As for the sheath, it's crudely wet-formed, wrinkled and misshapen, but it works. It has good retention.  Some of these could be solved with basic shop skills, but you shouldn't need to do any modding at this price

  EDIT 7/8/19: Pictures added to show tool marks and a blade defect I missed the first time around. If you have access to a shop or a friend who does, getting one for around the $105 they're selling for now would be worth it. They just need some work.

Poor fit and finish...

 Only major difference is the handle rivets are replaced by removable allen wrench bolts. It has great balance and feels great in hand. Beautiful stonewash pattern on the blade. Quality sheath

I also deduct one star because the knife appears to easily rust even in storage as it has happened to my two models. I recommend to keep it oiled to prevent the rust. Despite this two issues, I’m glad to own a true replica of the original

 But having to sand the handle and now the sheath for over 140$. K- bar is getting sloppy, not sure if I'll pay the money for k-bar anymore. was once my favorite kinfe brand.

Would have given a 5 if handles were at least lined up with tang, purchased 3, one for me 2 for buddies, not one had the handles even with the tang. Disappointed

Quality control lacking.

 Though there wasn't oxidation issues in the carbon steel, still there were quality control issues at play and this knife was clearly returned by someone and resold to me. The scales were misaligned and were different colors and different wood grains, almost like it was the last of a run. The blade was okay and would need a proper strop job to slice paper. The sheath looked like it had been tossed around in a junk drawer

  I expected much more from Ethan Becker and Kabar, and hope they revisit the drawing board on this knife giving with properly fitting walnut scales with a shorter blade.

This was attempt number 2 purchasing this BK Kephart and like the first time around, total disappointment in quality of build and condition of knife and sheath. This is probably the closest reproduction of the legendary Kephart knife that you are likely to find. It is more than a reproduction, actually: it is a fully-functional camp knife. This is not meant to be a display or museum piece. The only deviation from the original Kephart that I can see is that the wooden handle scales are held fast not by pins but by removable Allen screws, all the better to make cleaning and servicing the knife easier
