Any good pickup truck may seem like a natural for tailgating excursions, but the Honda Ridgeline stands out as perhaps the best option available today.
It’s not the traditional body-on-frame pickup but is more like a typical SUV, which means it drives more like a car than a truck. The bed sits lower than that of other trucks, making it easier to get stuff in and out. And it has a unique tailgate that can either open flat or swing on side hinges. This pickup also comes with a protective bed liner to limit scratches.
The biggest draw for tailgating is the Ridgeline’s under-the-bed trunk: It’s bigger than an 80-quart cooler, with built-in drain plugs, shown above. If you want to listen to the game while you party, there is an available waterproof audio system that turns the bed walls into speakers. (Or you can use the burly wireless speaker listed in this article.)
You can change the audio source or volume with a paired smartphone. The system will also automatically shut off before the battery is drained. And you can plug a TV or other devices into the bed’s two-prong outlet.
Consumer Reports recommends the 2019 Ridgeline; it’s at the top of our compact pickup truck ratings. If you want a Ridgeline for tailgating, choose the RTL-E trim—it’s the cheapest version that has in-bed speakers and power outlet. (Lower versions don’t offer either.) That trim level also includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. It starts at just under $42,000, not including the destination fee.

 For a more potent visual assertion of ruggedness, consider the Honda Performance Development Appearance package as seen on our tester. The HPD package adds a unique grille, nifty bronze wheels, HPD emblems, and these tacked on black fender flares for a cool $2,800. Personally, I'd skip the flares. For comparison, here's the non HPD Ridgeline

 A 3.5 liter V6 matched to a 9-speed automatic transmission. Honda's i-VTM4 torque vectoring all-wheel drive system comes standard and can send up to 70% of the engine's power to the rear wheels and 100% of that power to either the left or the right wheel as conditions demand. It's a neat system that yields good traction off-road and enhanced agility on-road

This is my first time seeing the Ridgeline out in the real world and I have to say, out under the sun, it does look brawnier. I'm not sure brawny and attractive are necessarily synonymous, but if this helps Honda sell more Ridgelines, more power to them

Considering that this can also tow up to 5,000 pounds, so things like ATVs and small sports cars, this Ridgeline can still do the job. If you're an off-road enthusiast, then I would avoid the Honda Ridgeline altogether. This thing can still get the job done, but there are much better tools out there for better money

 Sure, this thing has all-wheel drive and the IVTM system, which is actually pretty clever because it can send more torque to the outside wheel so that it can help you maneuver more easily. And also, the clutch packs can actually turn the rear differential into a locking rear differential, which is really cool. But when it comes to off-roading, something like the Tacoma is just so much better because you can engage the 4x4 system and there's also a two-speed transfer case so that you can exchange some vehicle speed for a lot more torque. Something like that can get you through an off-road course much more easily and handily compared to something like this

 It now looks more boxy. The hood has been restyled, so the front end looks a bit taller. Although I have to say this hood looks kind of weird because it looks like there's a panel gap between the hood and the front bumper. Maybe it's just this copy
