 Now I've been using the Hammerhead Karoo 2 for about five or six months now, and this review is long overdue. But in my defense, the company updates the software on this thing every two weeks, and it's not just small updates. Over the past five or six months, there's been significant updates like the addition of a Climb Pro feature, better onboarding, better load times, all new UI elements, and even some really obvious items like adding the ability to dismiss a ride, which seems crazy. Super weird to me that you couldn't dismiss a ride when I first got this device, but at least they fixed that in one of those biweekly updates, and maybe that's the one key takeaway about this device

 Give it a squeeze or a hug. Maybe take a picture of you two together, because that thing is going to be gone immediately, if not sooner, and remember that without that, the Karoo 2 could get water in here. It could get water damage, and that would be a very expensive mistake. I have two quick tips for you, just from stuff that I've noticed

 Okay, let's talk about who I think should avoid the Hammerhead Karoo 2. First off, if you're one of those people that are very concerned about weight, there's other devices on the market that can do a lot, maybe not everything that this computer does, but a lot at a fraction of the weight of this device. If you're one of those people that wants to go really long, maybe a bike packing type person, I think that this battery life is going to be frustrating for you. Next, if you are into mountain biking, I do think that there are better options than this on the market just because of being more specific about trails and different mountain biking options

 You can buy those little USB-C cover ports, those little plugs in bulk for cheap, or I met this really nice guy online who sells 3D printed USB covers with a little hole that you can run a tether through, and it's using soft TPU rubber. He's only charging like three bucks for them. I think now it's like four for 13. Honestly, I really think you should actually charge more for those little things, but I'm going to leave a link to both of those options in the description of this video, and you guys can check those out if you have a Hammerhead and you want to pick up some sort of USB cover

Best cycling computer out there

 You have really simple menus with either a tile system or a swipe down with everything quite easy to find and logically grouped together, I never really found myself in deep menu rabbit holes like I tend to with something like Garmin. And on that note, using the Karoo 2 really shows how bad Garmin's menus actually are. Wahoo and Brighton are certainly better than Garmin but Hammerhead have really crushed it for simple usability. From a living with it perspective this is just a damn nice GPS, it's also really nice when you're out on the bike

 The product matured a lot between that weird brick of a first generation and this much more well thought out second generation and I'm excited to see where they take this concept especially now that SRAM has made an acquisition of Hammerhead and despite a few shortcomings I think that it is actually quite a good value premium unit if that makes any sense. It's my favourite unit in the range between something like the Edge 530 and Bolt V2 and the top end Garmin Edge 1030+. I think this is the strongest unit within that sort of upper middle tier. I do want to acknowledge that this unit was sent for review by Hammerhead but it's fully independent and all of the editorial control is my own

 I just didn't really care for the 830's hardware and the Element Rome feels too expensive especially compared against the Bolt V2. That said I actually prefer the Edge 530 and the Element V2 over the Edge 830 and the Element Rome. Those mid-range devices just bring so much value for so much less money and I always gravitate towards that sort of corner of the market when I have to spend my own money. And that kind of brings me to an important point

 The Hammerhead Karoo 2, easily the most hyped bike GPS ever and the great hope for breaking the Garmin and Wahoo duopoly. How does it stack up and should you buy one? Well after about 9 months of using one, I'm ready to give my final thoughts. Let's start with the Karoo 2's hardware and it's my favourite overall package of any GPS with nice slim profile, quite small bezels, a well implemented touch screen, physical buttons all around the edge and USB-C charging. It's really hard to go back from a big screen GPS once you've gotten used to them so don't be afraid that it'll feel too large if you buy one if you're already used to something that's a little bit smaller

Another Komoot believer here! I tour with a Hammerhead Karoo 2 navigation system and my wife with her iPhone. Sharing routes is super easy and it just comes up with excellent routes.

 Costing £359 the Karoo Hammerhead 2 is probably most comparable to the Garmin Edge 830 for a little over £300 and the Wahoo Element Rome for just under £300. Now compared to the Edge 830 the Karoo 2 definitely has the better screen but it is less well established and I have found it to be a little less stable than its Garmin counterpart. Meanwhile the Wahoo Element Rome is harder to use with its buttons which aren't particularly easy to press compared to this excellent touch screen on this device but the Wahoo has the Karoo beaten in its setup process which is all just done through a smartphone. Ultimately I think the Hammerhead Karoo 2 is offering a promise of more to come in the future

 All of the setup of the Hammerhead Karoo 2 is actually done on device which is slightly different to say the Garmin Edge 830 which offers you a blended option of either set up on the device or set up via your phone and the Wahoo Element Roam which is all set up completely on your phone. So if you turn it on the first thing it will tell you to do is to sign in to a wi-fi. Now I recommend you find a particularly stable wi-fi not say a hot spot on your phone because I did have some instability issues when it came to setting up this device using a hot spot. So if you use a stable wi-fi it asks you to log into that and then you'll need to set up an account

 Hammerhead has exploded onto the cycling computer scene in the recent years with the original Karoo proving to be enormously popular and now the Karoo 2 looks to carry on that mantle. It's based on an android operating system and looks to blend the functionality of both a mobile phone with a cycling computer. Today I'm going to give you my review. Very well engineered box and in here you'll have a charging cable and lanyard, the out front mount, an allen key and also the adapter for a Garmin out front mount. Bike computers: Wahoo Element Bolt or Garmin Edge 530

 hey guys welcome to another video so in today's video I'm going to be giving you my thoughts on the Hammerhead Karoo 2 cycling head units. Last year as some of you might have remembered I did an unboxing of it which basically just shows what it's like new out of the box and everything it comes with and if you want to check that out that's just in the description box below. In this video I'm not going to be going into too much depth of all the features of the unit otherwise this video would just be way too long and I already feel like there's a lot of videos that already exist on YouTube that go into that kind of depth such as DC Rainmaker. Basically how I'm going to do this video is tell you a bit about the things I do like about this unit, the things I don't really like about it or I think could be improved and ultimately whether I would recommend buying this unit

 It is a touchscreen which I've never been keen with other devices like the Garmin because it's dinged pretty useless when it rains or if you're wearing winter gloves but what I really like about the Karoo 2 is that it also has buttons and you can simply lock the touchscreen and only use the buttons if it's raining or if you're wearing gloves or for whatever reason. Another great feature on the Karoo 2 is the mapping and navigation. Based on my experience using the mapping function on both the Garmin and the Wahoo I think the Karoo comes out a winner in this regard. Obviously the screen makes it really easy to navigate the rerouting is more intuitive in my opinion and there is also a climbing mode that shows upcoming climbs on your route in really good detail

 It's incredibly powerful it has 32 gigabytes of RAM and 32 gigabytes storage so heaps of room for things like maps, the interface is really easy to use and I found there is no lag when using a touchscreen so it feels like you're using a smartphone. The screen is pretty amazing it's definitely the best screen that I've seen on any cycling head unit.  So finally the last thing that I wasn't really a fan of was the low battery life. I think the most I got out of it was around nine to ten hours on one charge and in comparison to other units I've used such as the Garmin or Wahoo can typically get up to 15 hours sometimes more depending on what device you're using. With the Karoo 2 I was finding I'd have to charge it every once two rides whereas with my Garmin Edge 530 for example I could get away with charging it maybe once a week. I think the low battery life is to be expected with a unit like this because it is quite powerful and does require more juice and if you think about it the screen is equivalent to like using a smartphone screen and we're typically charging our smartphones once or twice a day because to have that kind of interface does use a lot of power

But instead, I'm going to spare you the details that you can find on Hammerhead's website and share eight notable things that I learned about the Karoo 2, and in particular, how it worked for bikepacking. Let's do it. The Karoo 2 is slimmer and lighter than the original Karoo 1, coming in at 131 grams

 It's clear Hammerhead truly cares and they listen to the feedback from their users so that's something I definitely appreciate. Most devices like this are pretty accurate now. Hammerhead uses GPS, GLONASS, QZSS, and BDS satellites to cover most of the world. And I found that it locates my position very accurately in the trees, in canyons, and at high speeds

 And I found that the screen size was indeed touchscreen-friendly, as opposed to, say, some smaller touchscreen units on the market. But like all touchscreens, some gloves just will not work with the Karoo 2, especially, say, colder-weather gloves. So you need to keep that in mind. But the highlight here is not the touchscreen
