I bought this pack and returned it. Did not fit as well as new Gregory 69-liter pack I recently bought and kept. Not nearly as comfortable and well-fitting as the new Deuter Air Contact Ultra 50+5 that I recently got for short backpacking trips. I think the new Deuter torso length adjustable system is better and easier to use than the Focal

Not a home run

 Another nice touch is that the spacing here isn't too large so the load will still be able to sit on your hips and lower back effectively. You'll be able to carry a bit more weight because it's going to sit closer to your back. To enhance that comfort even further Gregory's added their leaf spring lumbar pad. This will add just a little bit of weight to the pack but it's also going to give you that much more comfort when compared to some other ultralight options that may just be mesh or super minimal padding

 The materials are slimmed down and minimal but still give you all of what you need for a long distance through hike. Plenty of capacity guarantees you can go for miles without a resupply and gives you the ability to pack a bear canister if it's required. Whenever I'm taking a first look at a pack I like to check out how it's going to carry. The Optic is built with a lightweight 7000 series aluminum tubular frame that you can actually see on the outside of this pack

 The mentality with this pack is that it's meant to be ultralight. So Gregory's removed any excess zipper compartments or access to areas to drastically reduce the weight. All the contents are accessible through the top lid of the pack. There aren't any front, side or bottom access points on this one

Gregory Optic 58 Internal Frame Backpack

Smaller waisted people should be aware that Gregory’s hip belt specifications for the pack appear to be inaccurate. The pack specifications say it will fit a size 27" waist, I have a 30" waist and the Focal 58 size Small hip belt just barely fits me, I have it cinched in all the way, there is no further adjustment and no practical way that I can see to make it any shorter. My torso length is between the Small and Medium sizes so I also tried on a size Medium pack (specification is 28” waist) but the Medium hip belt didn’t fit me, it was too loose.

Overall, I really like this backpack and recommend it, but would like to see Gregory modify the shoulder straps so they are more comfortable and (only significant for smaller waisted people) modify the hip belt so it can be shorter (but don’t make the hip belt pockets smaller!).

My other significant issue with the pack is that the shoulder straps seem to be a bit narrow and/or underpadded for me, they become uncomfortable on my collarbones after a short time wearing the loaded pack (up to 32lbs on a longer trip). Luckily the hip belt is extremely comfortable so I can stand to wear the pack on multi-day trips, and I like everything else about it enough that I have decided to put up with the shoulder strap discomfort and hope that eventually I’ll get used to them. 

Excellent lightweight backpack, with some caveats

 And if your pack does fail on you for whatever reason, you are covered by Gregory's lifetime warranty. But there are some negatives that I've encountered with this pack. The first couple have to do with carrying capacity. Like I said, it does carry 40 pounds really well, but they could have made it carry a little bit better

 We have a trekking pole attachment system on one side here. You have vertical aluminum stays to transfer weight to your hips, and then you have horizontal fiberglass stays to help stabilize the load. The pack is advertised as being able to carry 35 pounds, but I've had over 40 pounds in it when I had to do a big water carry in the desert, and it carried that weight no problem. In order to maximize the carrying capacity of this pack, just make sure that all of the compression straps are done up, especially these blue ones, which wrap around the bottom here

 Because it's floating, you can really pack a lot into the top pocket here. I can fit my first aid kit, poop kit, diddy bag, as well as a whole bunch of other items. As well, there's a pocket on the underside of the brain, which is great for storing things like your keys or your wallet. The pack has some great pockets

 This has all the comfort needed without extra weight. It is a simple pack when it comes to access/pockets. This was also a positive factor in my choice of purchase because it’s less that can wear out/break on extended hikes. I love my Baltoro, but I will be using this Focal 58 much more

3 oz. The pack’s setup is fairly conventional with large hip belt pockets, large side pockets, an expandable front pocket, and a floating lid with two large zippered pockets. A lightweight replacement lid is included if you want to save a few ounces. While the main compartment is quite large and can store a ton of gear, the pack sits close to your hips (for a ventilated pack) making it easy to carry and pack

 While this increases comfort, it limits the frame’s ability to transfer weight to the hip belt. It’s barely noticeable under 30-35 lbs, but the pack gets increasingly ungainly if you try to load it up much heavier.The mesh back floats over the ventilation cavity and is seamless for increased comfort.The shoulder straps and hip belt are covered in mesh with pre-curved padding weather

 Even on our last day’s 4,400-foot uphill slog from the Colorado River to the South Rim, the Focal carried comfortably. The very breathable, perforated foam in the shoulder straps, lumbar pad, and hipbelt softened the load, with the entire harness wrapping very comfortably around hips and over shoulders to distribute the weight and prevent pressure points; and it’s treated with odor-controlling Polygiene. These fixed (non-adjustable) packs come in three men’s and women’s sizes, fitting torsos from 16 to 22 inches in the men’s Focal and 14 to 20 inches in the women’s Facet. While I’ve worn a men’s medium in other Gregory packs, the men’s small Focal fit my 18-inch torso well, even though I’m on the cusp between men’s small and medium
