I got a Grayl Geopress for $60ish before tax and going in for a pair of new boots (eyeing the La Sportiva Nucleo). That alone should get me the $20 gift card which I think I'll use to get either some kind of collapsible 3L -ish water storage, a longer spoon (sick of getting my hands dirty from those food bags!)

I’m from the Midwest as well and I can say I’ve had good luck with Sawyer squeeze and squeeze mini. For more questionable sources in my home area I’ve also carried a Grayl Geopress, adds the ability to filter out some viruses as well as some chemicals/ heavy metals. For both I use either a neck gaiter or handkerchief or the like to pre filter as rivers and creeks in my neck of the woods are full of sediment which will plug up any filter system. So I pre filter with one of those options over the mouth of my dirty bag and then on goes the filter and into the clean bag it goes.

Grayl Geopress post Katadyn BeFree. The BeFree clears out most of the sediment and big stuff and the Grayl gets rid of chemicals and viruses. You can skip the BeFree but that will shorten the Grayl’s filter lifespan. The Grayl is weighty but the peace of mind is worth it to me.

I keep a sawyer as a backup but the main method I use is my grayl geopress. It’s so quick and simple and filters viruses and everything. They now make a smaller version but I like my 24 oz it’s clips on my bag and when empty I can’t tell it’s there.
