 Hello everybody hope you did okay welcome to my computer within my cabin now today I'm going to look at the Garmin index s2 smart scale that I recently picked up I got this from wiggle for 129 pounds 99 They do a black version here that I've got in the box and there's also a white one But now see unfortunately they've sold out of them so must be popular So I thought I'd give it this a go especially in my current state of not running want to make sure I don't get too Too overweight before I start up again So we'll unbox this and see if we can get it set up and see if we can have an initial look at it So opening the box we've got some instructions and then we've got the cover I think the scale must be underneath that so if I lift out the scale and underneath We've got four batteries, and I think we've got four little risers there If you use it on carpet and these look like they're just gonna kill that back and looks like it's gonna be sticky Nothing else under the box And just taking the cover off the scale and here it is You're looking back up at it, so let's see if we can turn it on somehow and get it set up Okay, so the next stage is to insert the forcefly AAA Maxwell batteries into this battery compartment here batteries in Okay, the four batteries in so I've closed up the compartment and see if it's on now or not And see if it's on now or not And now turning it over you see I've got some signs of life on the display right so let's go over to the computer and set it up on Garmin Connect Okay, so now we're going to pair the device now the screen should look like that looking for the little flashing to say that it needs to pair it up So we go into Garmin Connect and we do dot dot dot more to go to Garmin devices and And then we want to add in the device So here ready to connect our smart scale, so let's connect it Now we get a number that appears on the screen on the scale that we have to enter So it's seven five seven four oh eight. That'd be like just a random number So we'll enter that into the app. So seven five seven four eight Eight Now it's hopefully working set up complete next So now you enter your name I think the idea of this you can have multiple uses so if you've got lots of people with Garmin accounts Where you live you can share the same scale I think it would just be me in my house because I don't think my wife want to use this I'll find out how much she weighs and all that stuff So let's enter Tim next Now we need to see if we can find my network So it's fine my network, which is the BT hub 5 so we're going into the password Let's go and find that And then next Scale connected Congratulations in your smart skills, let's get started So if we wanted to invite other people to it, we could share your scale and I can invite people here Okay, so it looks like we're all done and now if I look at my devices I should hopefully see the smart scale Yes, there it is Wi-Fi index set up. So if we go back into there doesn't seem there's anything more to do Okay, so also what we can do in the Garmin connect app is configure a few parameters So let's tap on the index s2 here and then we go to appearance and There's widgets that we can have So you can display all these things here, which are all turned on So I'll leave them all turned on because I want to find out about everything and Then we go into user settings and here I've got all my stats and I'm currently well I don't think I am actually weight of 71 kilos

7 and then that's my goal weight But sort of my racing weight of 71.0 So I've got a bit of work to do to get back to that and then let's see Those are the readings that I saw on the display. So we've got a BMI of 19.6 a body fat of 13

 I think since my industry and a few extra cakes Since then might have crept up a bit Activity class, I think that's quite important. That's sort of how often you exercise I also think I will set mine at 8 because I think it's about an hour a day Which I'm probably still doing as I tried to get on the bike So when I was running I'm probably average about an hour a day running I think activity class 10 if you're some sort of Ironman triathlete doing sort of 20 hours a week something like that So I think eight's about right for me. Let's have a look at the general settings here So I like to do 24 hour clock so it's changed to that And I'm because I'm British I do day month rather than month day. So we keep it like that Manage people as I said, you can add extra people there to use the scale if you have any and then Wi-Fi networks I think that's for if you want to just change your network So as you saw there those changes get synced the next time we connect so let's go and weigh myself then So I've got the scale ready to weigh myself I think we just tap on it to wake it up Here we go I don't think those changes are made of quite synced yet, but we are in kilograms and 12 hour clock Just tap that again All right, so let's get on What's the damage 74

Garmin Index S2 Smart Scale

 I do not have large bathrooms and so I typically store the scale on edge in a safe place in the bathrooms as it is pretty large compared to others I've owned. This works great except that the scale reads incorrectly after it has been placed on the floor. Even if it is woken up and left to sit for awhile (it'll be busy with an hour glass symbol communicating over the network) it will sometimes read 2-4 lbs heavier than it should. I've had to weigh myself sometimes 3 or 4 times over the course of an hour to finally get it to read correctly, although usually my technique of setting it down, waking it up, and coming back five minutes later gets it to tare correctly

 They imply they are accurate to like the tenth of a percentage point but in fact it is more like to the nearest couple of percentage points which never change for me.  In theory this scale will at least weigh you correctly and automatically plug it into Garmin Connect. In practice what I find is that it takes way longer than just plugging the weight in manually like I used to do. I wish I hadn't spent like $600 purchasing 3 of these scales for Christmas, but it works well enough that I'm not going to go through the hassle of sending them back

 It's ridiculous this scale can't tare it's own weight or whatever consistently and quickly. If it can't do that, it should remember it's own weight or calibration or whatever and have a mode you can manually put it in to recalibrate. I know it's not just a dud scale as all 3 of the scales have the exact same behavior. It's just a major time waster to get it to take a weight for the day and then go delete the bogus weights from your Garmin Connect account

 And then from here you're ready to weigh in. So for the actual weigh-in you'll just simply tap on the scale to wake it up. After stepping on the scale it'll first display your weight and at the top here it also shows the difference between your last weigh-in and this one. It then moves on to a screen that displays your name and what's cool is that you can have up to 15 users and we'll see that process here in a second

 You can also access your user settings directly from here and I'll refer to this activity class setting here in just a bit because this setting can have an effect on the biometric data. Under the general settings you'll be able to manage people, manage the connected Wi-Fi networks, as well as the time and date formats. And then from here you're ready to weigh in. So for the actual weigh-in you'll just simply tap on the scale to wake it up

 And you can actually change your activity class in Garmin Connect which will have an impact on these metrics. So I keep my activity class at ten which is generally about right for the level activity I do. And consumer level scales can be a little bit off in this department. What I think is most important with these type of scales is that numbers need to be very consistent

So I've used scales before where the numbers can be wildly off from one weigh-in to another even within the same minute. But what's nice about the index S2 is that I saw consistent numbers come out of this thing even during multiple weigh-ins within just a couple minutes of each other

I wouldn’t waste the money. It’s nice to see it all in one place as I have a Garmin watch. But every smart scale does this with some app or another. 

My experience: (28: M 5’ 10” 200 lbs.) weight can fluctuate on how you stand on the scale. Once, it weighed me in 10 lbs less than normal, after some excitement, I moved the scale to a different floor material and it read correctly. Most importantly, this scale says that over a year; my BMI has decreased by 1, my BF% has gone down 2%, my muscle mass has gone down 4 lbs, and bone mass has gone down ~1 lb, (body water % has been going up the last couple months most likely due to creatine and lifting).

I’ve been fairly active the past 3 years (been using the scale 2 years or so?). Anyways, I did group fitness (lifting and kickboxing 5 days/week) with a few setbacks here and there. I decided to take a hiatus from the group classes and have been consistently lifting the past two months 4 or 5/week on a PPL program through Fitbod.

Now. With all of that, 1.) I have a strong belief that the scale goes off your BMI for its BF% (more muscle = higher BMI = more fat %) 2.) How can a person be fairly active lose 4 lbs of muscle and 1 lb of bone (which I think is impossible btw) in a year? Oh, did I mention that the bone density weight can fluctuate from day to day? Lol. I think the scale confuses bone loss with water weight, and muscle loss with fat loss. Muscle weight should be increasing and fat should be decreasing over the course of a year. Bone density should not be fluctuating (maybe go up a tiny bit when lifting heavy weights). 

Bottom line: use a scan method like these nice people did, or use the navy bf % method, and a lean body mass calculator.
