Fallout 3 is still today one of my favorite games of all time (my friends likes NV more than 3) and Fallout 4 is one of my biggest disappointment of all time. But again, it looks amazing. If you want a light hearted shooter with mild RPG elements, go nuts. If you want another fallout RPG, then you're in for a big disappointment.

My first suggestion would be Fallout 3 or 4. Fallout New Vegas is amazing too, but it's a lot more structured around the story and plot, while 3 and 4 are a lot more "here's the world, have at it" like Skyrim was.

Fallout 4 was my first Fallout game and I then went back to try and play Fallout 3 and New Vegas (so I tried them some time around 2016). I bounced right off. The gameplay, especially the gunplay, just feels extremely clunky to me. Dated graphics can be improved if you spend enough time modding, but clunky feeling core mechanics are much harder to fix, so I gave up and am now waiting for the mods that port these games to Fallout 4's engine to be finished (which, yes, will take a long time, but I have plenty of other things to play).
