So turns out my great grandmother (aside from saving photos, see prior posts) also saved every letter ever written to her! I found a trove of hundreds of letters and post cards, dating back to 1899. My favorite one is a Christmas post card written from my 3rd great grandmother to my 2nd great grandmother. It said “Well Mamie I didn’t have a birthday card so I am sending you this.” 

There are even several international postcards as well! Some sent from friends in the Netherlands, Germany, and Zaire (now the DRC)! And the stamps!! Tons of 1¢, 2¢, and 3¢ stamps!!

I have SO many letters from two sets of 2nd great grandparents that were sent to my G-grandma. I’m just getting started on reading all of them and it’s just so interesting seeing their handwriting and reading their words. 

One particular letter stands out. My GG-grandpa wrote it to his daughter when he was in his 70s. In the letter, he ponders whether he raised his children the best way. What if he had given them more freedom to express themselves when they were younger? What if they hadn’t raised them with such “old fashioned” values? Would they be different people today?

This letter just really struck me as interesting, as all but one of his children turned out to be wonderful, caring people. What started this train of though? I wish I could ask him. I never knew him, but through the letters and stories I feel like I do. 

Anyhow, enough rambling, on to the point. I’m a very busy 19 year old college student, so I don’t have a ton of free time, but I’m also the only one in the family to have an interest in family history, so this is all on me. (Other than my late great grandmother who so kindly saved everything hoping someone would take an interest in it) So, what’s the best course of action to preserve these letters for future generations? I want to be like my great grandmother. I’m slowly working to scan them in, but it is very time consuming. Another problem is I can’t quite figure out how to format the files, do I make each letter its own PDF?

Where do I upload these letters? I’ve uploaded hundreds of photos to Ancestry.com and Family Search, is that the best place for letters as well?

And don’t even get me started on the countless notebooks full of family stories and recipes!! Man, I really wish she was still alive. I did get to know her, as she lived until I was 11.

I found a treasure trove in our family’s old farm house!! Hundreds (likely thousands) of family letters dating back to 1899!

) We are not able to accurately test their scanning speed for groups of photos, however; that's because the speed depends, in part, on how quickly you can open the flatbed's cover, remove the scanned photo and add a new one, and press the scan command again.

 (Our current Editors' Choice for a consumer flatbed photo scanner is the Epson Perfection V39($139.89 at Amazon).) We are not able to accurately test their scanning speed for groups of photos, however; that's because the speed depends, in part, on how quickly you can open the flatbed's cover, remove the scanned photo and add a new one, and press the scan command again.

Epson gives the speed of scanning photos with the FastFoto FF-680W as one print per second at 300dpi and one print every 3 seconds at 600dpi. In my test runs, the actual time spent scanning the prints at both resolutions was close to the Epson claims; I used a stack of 36 4-by-6-inch prints.

 These ratings are typical of today's document scanners. They are based on what I call the raw scanning speed, the time it takes for the scanner to physically scan the sheets, excluding any time spent in warming up, or in post-scan processing before the scan is saved to file. In this manner, using our 25-page, 50-image test document, I timed the FastFoto FF-680W in simplex at 50ppm, a bit better than its rated speed.

I'm working to digitize our life including documents and old photos. I don't know how many photos we have but I'm thinking well over 1K photos to scan (in addition to many boxes and files of documents). The photos are mostly family snaps from 15+ years ago (everything newer is already digital), not art photos. I have very few, if any, negatives (that I know of).

I'm trying get balanced perspectives on this. I've reached out to a photography forum but often they tend to push flatbed scanners, very high DPI, uncompressed, lossless storage formats, etc. While I can see that there are photos that warrant that, I'm not sure these fall into that category.

I think I'd rather avoid flatbed scanners (simply due to their slow and clunky nature) and definitely don't want to send out to a service.

I currently have a Fujitsu Scansnap ix500. I also have an iPhone X and a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H100 (super zoom camera that's many years old now). 

I'm wondering your thoughts on how the Scansnap would do at max 600 DPI for scanning 4x6 photos?

Would I do better to setup an overhead photo station with my iPhone (or the Sony) and take photos with either a camera/photos app, a photo scanning app, or just a scanning app with my iPhone. I already own ScanBot Pro (now SwiftScan) and it's photos scanning sibling Photo Scanner Pro. Perhaps I could find an inexpensive Bluetooth shutter to make the process faster? Would this provide any perceptible improvement over the ix500? Would the Sony make any difference?

Should I choose this route, do you have any recommendations on how to light evenly without getting reflections?

Would something like the Epson FastFoto scanner provide any improvements over either the ix500 or taking photos scans with my iPhone? Has anyone used the FastFoto for other scanning and how does it compare to the Fujitsu lineup for quality and easy of scanning into different services and apps? 

Would a higher end scanner like the Fujitsu fi 7160 offer any improvement on photo scanning or would it simply be faster? I also looked into the Raven scanner but, shockingly, they don't even allow one to scan to JPG at this point, let alone any other formats. They have no ETA on that either (it's solely PDF for now).

Automatic scanner that could scan old photos

 (Our current Editors' Choice for a consumer flatbed photo scanner is the Epson Perfection V39($125.35 at Amazon).) We are not able to accurately test their scanning speed for groups of photos, however; that's because the speed depends, in part, on how quickly you can open the flatbed's cover, remove the scanned photo and add a new one, and press the scan command again.

Major flaw with this device - LOST PHOTOS

Official Question Thread! Ask /r/photography anything you want to know about photography or cameras! Don't be shy! Newbies welcome!

 My desk has limited space, which required the USB cable to cross over my mouse and keyboard - which was obviously very impractical. But, after about a week and relentless searching on YouTube, I found a tutorial that finally seemed to address the issue.  Second impression? GEEZ, SHE'S FAST! I was raving to anyone who would listen about this extraordinary scanner I'd found that was easily scanning a tub of photos (over 1,000) a day! Within that first week alone, I'd cleared out five tubs of photographs and couldn't have been happier with my purchase. Sure, there were jams every so often but that's to be expected with old photos and an ADF

 Incessant jamming, repeat errors that the USB cable is once again needed, and worst of all, the error message "BUMMER". A Google search shows that other users have experienced the error message "BUMMER", but Epson seems to have no good answers as to what it means or how to remedy it. I've received this error message a few times but this time, I'm livid; I've just hand-fed approximately 100 photos through the automatic document feeder because they kept jamming when I tried to do it any other way and - upon scanning all 100+ photos, I received error message "BUMMER".

  With thousands of photos to scan (and a month of medical leave before me due to surgery), I splurged on this scanner with the hopes that it would keep me busy during recovery and make scanning the plethora of photographs a breeze.  My first impression was aggravating as we couldn't seem to get the scanner to connect to the computer without the USB cable.
