Exacerbating this effect is the fact that our ropes are often filled with abrasive dirt from playing outside all the time, and the fact that carabiners are now usually built with a narrower I-Beam shape to save weight while still offering the necessary strength. To combat the effects of premature wear and the need for an early retirement, the Edelrid HMS Bulletproof Triple FG employs a stainless steel insert covering the basket of the carabiner where the rope typically runs. This feature is worthy enough to make it our recommendation for durability &mdash; use it for any high-wear situations, such as belaying with an ATC, rappelling, or for setting up top-rope anchors. It also has the notable perk of including a wire-gate keeper in the crotch that ensures that it always stays oriented correctly without becoming cross-loaded. Add to that the triple-action auto-locking gate mechanism, and you have one secure locking carabiner on your hands.

 So we put the steel Inlet here where most of the abrasion on a carabiner happens due to the rope running over it and so for 2018. We widened the family a little bit and have now the bulletproof screw so the same shape as the bulletproof carabiner or with a with a locking mechanism and for belaying very important. The HMS bulletproof comes in triple and in a screw version, and also with this belay loop keeper, so you avoid any cross loading with it.

 The HMS bulletproof for us was a big step to complete our steel story. Our steel story aims at making metal products a little bit more sustainable, they're more durable, so you don't create more waste by having your aluminum products, basically thrown away because they're they're worn out. So this was the missing piece. Basically, because all of our belay devices are made from stainless steel, and last year we introduced the bulletproof quick-draw

 So I can make sure that whenever the carabiner is closed, the gate is closed, that the carabiner is also locked with the screw gate. You obviously don't have this because you have to manually screw it. This is definitely better in terms of the price. This is definitely better in terms of the safety

 I prefer a larger HMS type biner for belaying and rappelling. The belay loop keeper area is too small, my wider nylon belay look touches on both sides. I suspect thing this was made with a narrower belay loop in mind. I would also have preferred if the top wide section were flatter, not sloping so much toward the gate

I'm going to heavily disagree with the one star review here. I've been using this carabiner as my go to and only carabiner with my Petzl GriGri for a while. I climb 5+ days a week in the gym and outdoors whenever I have a free weekend, and this carabiner has held up very well to the use and still looks fairly new. The spring loaded gate is easy to use, and I suggest attaching it to your belay loop first before loading the rope in the GriGri and attaching it to your carabiner

Doesn't wear like aluminum carabiners, lightweight.

 When using a gri-gri it is less important because the rope friction is wholly applied against the surface of the device and does not contact the biner. Other than that the lever device at the base allows you to clip it in to the belay loop confident that it won’t walk or twist, thus simplifying the procedure. Just the right size, and not too heavy either, this is the best belay biner that I have ever used!

Steel insert increases durability by many magnitudes

Auto lock? Check. Crossload prevention? Check? Already sold. Bonuses, it’s got steel or some other more durable material on the underside so your rope and belay device is less likely to wear it meaning you’ll have it longer and more importantly won’t chew your rope. At least not as quickly
