You can use wonder balsam on those boots, for sure! Keep in mind that the leather will darken a fair bit once the balsam is applied, but it will lighten up again with a few months of use.

I had the same issue, all my docs fit perfectly except that area until I get the tongue broken in. I use the Dr. Martens wonder balsam and kind of massage the boots (especially the tongue) with my hands and/or cloth and kind of warm up the leather so it is more pliable. Then I just put them on and rock my feet back and forth. Wear them around the house as much as you can, but give your feet breaks.

To avoid that in the future, do Doc Martens Wonder Balsam, or a Leather conditioner every few months. That should keep the leather more pliable and able to resist that. The top of the foot issue is a common one with docs, the simple solution is to break them in. However to make it comfortable enough while you are breaking them in so that it doesn't bother you anymore.

I have the same boots in oxblood and I only use neutral coloured products on them, as that won’t discolour the light stitches. Wonder balsam is always a good option.
