 It is a very, very thin like airy material, and I I happen to be in the landscaping business I work outside every day in the Sun. I live at the coast, it's super hot during the summer and I was looking for a long-sleeve option because you know I'm not getting any younger and I'm trying to stay out of the Sun a little bit, and so I really wanted to find something that was Long sleeves that would keep the Sun off my arms, but would also breathe and not kill me trying to work out in the extreme heat. So I tried tons of options tons of different shirts and nothing really worked until I came across this particular shirt now I do want to say there is a definite difference between Columbia, Silver Ridge and the Columbia Silver Ridge light. The fit is different

 I think I should try on a size Small but that makes little sense because I wear size Large shirts. The body is long but fits pretty well with lots of room to spare, it is not slim fit in any sense.  I really question the manufacturer's sizing, the measuring tape shows this shirt to be a lot larger than specified on their chart.  I love the color and pattern and the fabric feels nice

)  Original review: I got the size Medium and it is big on me. I am 5'10" 180lbs and wear a 16-33 dress shirt and these sleeves come down to my 2nd knuckle with my arm straight. I believe they are measuring out to 35 or 36 when the chart specifies 34. The neck measures out to 18 when the chart says 16

 In other words the Medium is really the Large and so on. I am returning the Medium and have a Small on order (which is insane because I wear a size Large t-shirt.)  Let'S look all around that nice. This is the olive green color. There were all kinds of options, but this is the one i picked all right. Finally got this thing out of the plastic: oh wow

Here it is, ah it smells good. It connects all the way through - hey, hey, i'm back with another review today, i'm doing some clothes. This is the columbia men's silver ridge. Light long sleeve shirt got this on amazon for just over 40 dollars, and i have an affiliate link in the description if you're interested in that anyway, let's get right into it here it is okay

 This is a large i'm six foot tall 170 pounds. I have a 40 inch chest and a 21 inch torso measured down the back, and even though i followed the sizing chart on amazon, the shirt is still a little bit big. For me, it's just a little bit baggier than i'd like and also a little bit longer than i'd like meaning that it hangs a little bit farther past. My waist and even the sleeves are, i think, bigger circumference than i was expecting, although i do have to say that i might wind up wanting this to fit differently than a normal collared

I’m specifically looking for long sleeve shirts, preferably UPF 50, that I can wear while hiking and working on my farm in West Texas.  The area has very low humidity, a lot of wind, and can get very hot (110F+).  One summer, the temps in the canyons I like to hike registered 130F at the bottom.  

Is there anything that will provide good sun protection that will not significantly increase the likelihood for over-heating?  I prefer natural fibers if that makes a difference.

I'm starting to get more serious about sun protection while hiking, and decided that it might be time to give up my short sleeves of days yore. I love hiking in desert climates most of all, places like Joshua Tree, so I'm realizing that maybe my past short sleeves wasn't great.


My question is, is there a reason why one would do Button-Up shirts as opposed to a sun hoody? I like the idea that with the button up shirts, some have those snap sleeves, so I can turn them in to short sleeve shirts if need be. I have my eye on the women's REI Sahara shirt, but also seeing that the Outdoor Research Optimist is on sale at REI, and that on the Patagonia site, there seems to be one called the "self-guided hike shirt" that has Upf 50 protection but no reviews. Any thoughts on these versus a sun hoody? 


Second, and this may sound a bit dumb, but for sun hoody's, are they themselves the shirt, or do you generally wear another shirt under there? Seems like if it's a hoody in the more traditional sense and you wear both a short sleeve shirt under it and a hoody on top, it wouldn't be as cool and breathable, but is it actually light enough that it's still cool? Or do you just wear the hoody on its own just with just a sports bra (or nothing) underneath? I think I'm just a bit confused as to how to use this item, or if it's considered an outer layer or a base layer. I was thinking about trying the Patagonia Tropical Comfort hoody.

Sun Protection: hoody vs. Button-Up? And what to wear underneath?

I like the shirt but had to return two before getting the right size. I wear large or xl in all other shirts. First time buy Columbia so I ended up keeping the medium. I’d make sure free returns are n option if purchasing for the first time
