And about there is perfect. So you can see this little device can give you a lot of gain, clean gain, without you having to crank on your field record...

Use a Cloudlifter CL1. You want an unpowered clean gain booster. Forget the cheap Amazon preamp, that's your pain point. Beyond that, use balanced cables and a power cleaner if you want ultra crisp vocals.

It requires about +60dB of clean gain. If your preamp can deliver that, then you will not need a CL1.
