 When riding steeper, rougher trails, I think the big takeaway for me was just how well-balanced and stable, as well as calm, the jackal felt. Now, I wouldn't say that the bike isolates you from the bumps in the same way that some bikes can, but its balance and chassis composure, with next to no pitching backwards or forwards, meant I could remain central on the bike and never needed to throw my weight around to counter any quirks or odd behaviour from the bike. Bumps are heavily muted rather than completely swallowed. It's composed and controlled rather than being pillowy soft, with a decent amount of feedback on offer without any discomfort

 Placing the main pivot too high might be great for straight line speed over really rough terrain, but its handling in just about every other scenario will likely suffer. Just how far back does the Jekyll's rear axle move then? Well, when the bike gets to around about 100mm of travel, the rear axle moves back as well as up by around about 12mm from where it started. From that point, it begins to arc forwards and upwards until you hit the full 165mm of travel. The idea here, Cannondale say, is to provide the benefits of the rearward axle path including stability and control, but without impacting any of the bike's agility

 That main pivot isn't actually as high as it could be. Even Cannondale have referred to it as a mid-high pivot bike. Placing the main pivot too high might be great for straight line speed over really rough terrain, but its handling in just about every other scenario will likely suffer.  The Jekyll now sports a high main pivot with a four bar linkage layout to deliver the 165mm of rear wheel travel. We're seeing more and more high pivot trail and enduro bikes entering the market, but what are the benefits of this arguably more complicated design? The main factor is that high pivot designs help to create a more rearward axle path. This in theory allows the rear wheel to move backwards and up out of the way when hitting an obstacle. It also helps to keep a more constant wheelbase, which in turn should boost stability and control

Cannondale’s Jekyll, in various forms, has seen more than its fair share of success on the enduro race scene over the years, but it’s been a while since we’ve seen it on the podium.

Tongues got wagging when the Cannondale truck rolled into the first round of the downhill World Cup in 2019 with a rather unusual, twin shock equipped bike piloted by the talented Matt Simmonds.

Were they coming back to downhill after all these years? Or were they working towards something none of us could have predicted? Well, it appears the latter might well be true.

As you can see, the new Jekyll is an entirely different beast to its predecessor. According to Luis Arraiz, Cannondale’s lead engineer on the project, “the goal for the new Jekyll was to create the ultimate descending enduro bike.

All the decisions in terms of suspension layout, idler, axle path, anti-squat, anti-rise, leverage ratio and centre of gravity were driven by that specific goal.”
After nearly three years of hard graft, the bike you see before you is the product of a massive amount of work.

All-New 2022 Cannondale Jekyll | Hidden Shock & High-Pivot ...

 Now we will say that the rearward axle path isn't hugely noticeable on the trail. We'll clarify that the Jekyll has a fantastic seated position thanks to the steep seat tube angle and the relatively high front end and the longer rear centre is also appreciated when the gradient kicks up, keeping the bike tracking quite calmly. Overall it does pedal pretty well but there is some suspension bob when things get steep. Not helping things, the shock's climb switch is right down by your ankles making it awkward to access while riding

 Compared to the old Jekyll, the new frame also moves to a true four bar suspension platform. It also moves the shock lower down in the frame. It's actually hidden away in this twin spar section of the lower down tube where it's shielded by this bolt-on armour plate underneath the down tube. In terms of geometry, one of the more interesting aspects of the new Jekyll is its adoption of size specific rear centre lengths

 Now there are two Cannondale Jekyll models for 2022 and both are built around the same carbon fibre frame. The bike we're being testing here is the Cannondale Jekyll 2 and this bike has a recommended retail price of $6,899 Australian dollars. It's equipped with a RockShox Zeb Select fork and a Fox Float DPX2 shock. We've got a Shimano Dior groupset with 4 piston brakes and 203mm rotors front and rear

 Another irritation is the bulky chainstay pivot which has a habit of snagging the chain during wheel installation and removal and there's already some scratches to the paint as a result. Otherwise the Jekyll frame is finished well and we've got to give a thumbs up to Cannondale for moving away from its much loved PF30 bottom bracket system to a good old fashioned threaded bottom bracket. And that brings us to the verdict of the 2022 Cannondale Jekyll. With its twin spar chassis, hidden shock and shape shifting paint job, the Jekyll is no doubt one of the most striking enduro race bikes currently on the market

The Cannondale Jekyll is a 165mm travel enduro bike that has boldly jumped onto the high pivot bandwagon for 2022. Along with its hidden shock, idler wheel and shape-shifting paint job, this is no doubt a thoroughly striking machine. But is different better?

 I mean, part of that's because of the way they did the front triangle. I mean, they made room for a bottle cage and the shock is really high. But there's other single pivot bikes that managed to get the shock lower and get the standover lower. So we're at kind of an interesting time in the bike industry

 I think those DPX2 shocks seem to manage oil pretty well. It doesn't feel like you're just riding off the air spring. But the shock wasn't terribly progressive. Like I was going through travel pretty quickly

 It's a good like 65 degree head angle. I mean, it's a progressive front end, but you kind of feel like you're on this kind of shortish, I don't want to say twitchy, but not a limo. And also it's what we're riding, higher speed stuff, super chattery, kind of hoping that something that's a little bit longer wheelbase will smooth things out a little more. What did you guys think about kind of the performance of the shock itself? Lots of control

 You get an X01 components, a Fox 36 float, and you get in the Gemini system. Are we getting good deal here? Well, you do have a carbon front end, alloy rear end, but big old carbon swing link. And I don't know, components spec, I think I wished for a more tunable fork. It has a fit for I like the HSCLC Fox 36 a little bit more

The Jekyll stands out on the descents because of its short chainstays and ground-hugging suspension. It stands out on the climbs because of its secret weapon, the Gemini shock, which makes it potentially the best climber in the bunch.

 Hitting the handlebar lever toggles between the bike's flow and hustle modes. Flow gives you 165 mils of rear travel while engaging the hustle mode reduces travel to 130 mils. The change is made by reducing the air volume of the rear shock which has a big impact on the bike's suspension feel too. With the hustle mode on it sits up higher in its travel which is great for pedal clearance while climbing and gives it a much more sprightly feel overall too

 Low to the ground, massive chainstays, a whopping one piece carbon link and a chunky down tube. We weren't sold on the aesthetics at first. The high and forward shock position does seem a little bit odd but it's definitely grown on us and the quality of the paintwork and finish is totally awesome. You have to see this thing in the sunlight to really appreciate it

 With the custom offset rear wheel, Cannondale have been able to keep the rear end really short at just 420 millimeters which is about as short as you're going to find in this category and this has a big impact on the way that this bike rides keeping it feeling really lively on the trail for a long travel bike. It loves to pre-jump and pump and it rewards an engaged riding style. The suspension doesn't do well if it's run on the soft side. With more than 25% sag we found it too easy to bottom out and then it rode too low leading to lots of flip pedals and a feeling of being trapped down in the travel
