 Yeah and it looks so much tighter but to be honest all of us hit a fairly decent one down there didn't we but yeah yours was definitely the pick of the bunch I think but yeah we all enjoyed the game on the old course it was it was magic it was fantastic wasn't it and St Andrews as a place is just magical as well but we're back here at Howley you've played a few rounds since then as well talk to us about firstly how did you find them when we were in Scotland how did you hit your irons? I hit my irons particularly well it was a big help being told where to hit them by the caddies but yeah the overall feel compared to my Mavericks previous I just felt so much more confident with them and the results so far have been very pleasing. And when you've got back here obviously very different conditions that we play in here at Howley it's a little bit softer we don't get quite as much run have you found that they've worked quite nicely then as well? Yep similar not as much run like you say as we get on the Lynx courses whether it's very hard but certainly the dispersion has been and my accuracy has been a lot more improved with them probably just a shade longer as well. Yeah good I mean not the accuracy is not kind of important on St Andrews but the greens are ginormous aren't they I mean you can literally don't even have to hit a particularly good iron shot and you're on the green aren't you whereas here precision is definitely paramount it's top of the list when you're looking for the way that you hit irons really round here the targets are small aren't they the flags tend to be tucked away a little bit as well so really the kind of acid test for them is here you know you play most of your golf here as well don't you? So it's great that we've been able to test them on a variety of different golf courses but particularly the most famous one and St Andrews I mean and Howley as well so yeah it's been great to test them we've obviously been to the Performance Centre at St Andrews as well how good was that? Amazing you know it's just a different level it feels like you're on stage there with all the cameras and lighting and what have you. Yeah being able to see how far you hit every shot straight away when you hit it obviously Callaway have spent a lot of money on the rage up there as well haven't they the fitting room that we were in looked great but also the entrance way where they had all the golf balls in the table and all that kind of stuff and the staff there were awesome too so yeah hopefully this is the start of you playing some absolutely awesome golf and we're going to have to upgrade all your woods as well aren't we? So we'll definitely have a look at that but yeah thanks for watching hopefully you've enjoyed the little journey we've been through from all the way from the fit to going to St Andrews to then playing a little bit here around Howley and obviously giving you a bit of feedback as to how these irons have performed throughout thanks to you Jamie as well because it's been a bit of time that you've had to spend but I suppose you've got a nice set of clubs out of it as well haven't you? Golfshake's equipment expert Ryan Rastall chats to a relative new golfer Jamie, who is also a member at Howley Hall Golf Club where Ryan is based, to find out what drew him into the game.

Jamie took the opportunity to get expert advice from Ryan whilst also being custom fit for a new set of Callaway APEX DCB irons, which were new in 2021.

CALLAWAY APEX DCB IRONS CUSTOM FITTING & REVIEW

 Hi there, Ryan Rastle here for Golfshake.com. You join me here at Howley Hall Golf Club where I'm the PJ Professional and I'm with Jamie.

 So Jamie is one of the members here at Howley who's gotten back into the game a little bit in the last 18 months and kind of with the extra bit of time and things

 and golf being one of the only things you're actually allowed to get out and do in the last year or so, you've kind of come back to the game a little bit haven't you?

 I have, yes. And got the bugger again. Yeah, good. And Callaway have been very, very kind and because you're getting back into the game they want to really help you get back into it in style

 and certainly with the new Apex iron that is coming out we're going to have a bit of a look at what you've already got and try and fit you into one of the new Apex irons as well.

 And we've got a bit of a goal in mind for this because we're actually going to the home of golf in a couple of months time, aren't we?

 So we are going on one of the packages that St Andrews Lynx Trust are doing in conjunction with the 200th birthday of old Tom Morris

 and hopefully we're going to enjoy a round on the new course and the old course and hopefully the weather's like this, nice and sunny and not too much wind.

 So we're going to get in there now, we're going to hit a few shots, do a bit of a fit in and have a bit of a look at exactly how we can improve the iron that you've currently got.

 So come on guys, let's go and have a look.

 So when you've seen us doing the fitting inside there we looked at Jamie's current Maverick set and when we had a bit of a look at this a while back you were hitting these great weren't you to be fair?

 They were an iron that you've got on quite well with.

 Yep, it was better than the previous set that I had, I think the shaft was a lot to do with it but the head was more forgiving and the dispersion was less than the previous set that I had.

 Yeah so we've taken a bit of a look at this in there and also Apex and particularly this one, so this is Apex DCB which is deep cavity back.

 So this is an iron that if you look at the two you can see there's a little bit more sole width in there, we've got some tungsten in there and to be honest loads of technology in the head so a little bit more than what we're seeing with Maverick.

 So particularly that kind of forged feel you said when we were in there doing the fitting that you absolutely loved that.

 So what about looks, is there any real difference, is there anything that you like?

 Aesthetically the top line is a lot more appealing to me because it's slightly more narrow so it has that, it just sits nice when you're looking down the shaft.

 And we really saw forgiveness was massive as well which you wouldn't really think with an iron that they look quite similar to be fair don't they?

 They're both supposed to be improvement irons but the stats show that the DCBs were just that step further.

 And going back to shaft we went for something a little bit lighter didn't we?

 So the set that you had with these in had 110g shaft in, this one down to 95g and we just found that you kind of timed it better didn't we?

 So we'll put a little graphic up there that you guys can see but in terms of where the balls were landing and how consistently the ball flight was as well so we were getting similar peak height to most of them, less shape on the ball flight as well

 and crucially your bad one when you're out on the golf course tends to go out a little bit right doesn't it?

 It's a little bit of a sort of slicey one if you like which many of you will probably suffer with as well but we found with this that we were actually getting it going the other way weren't we?

 We were hitting a little draw so we were actually straightening the flight up a little bit.

 If anything there was a little pull going on in there wasn't there but it was all to do with getting the right weight of shaft so that you could actually deliver the face properly wasn't it?

 What about ball flight did you notice anything different between what you've had and what you're hopefully going to get?

 I thought the DCB was a lot easier to get in the air quicker so it was straight hot off the face.

 Yeah and certainly when we look at the sole is that touch wider but there's lots more tungsten down in the head there so I'm going to put a little cut away so you can see exactly what's going on in the head of these irons

 so there's quite a bit of tungsten low in the head.

 We've got the urethane microsphere technology that Callaway used for the feel but also the fact that it's forged as well that forged metal and forged steel on there just makes it feel a bit nicer doesn't it?

 So we're going to get these ordered Apex DCB hopefully they'll be here by the time we go to St Andrews and we'll give you a bit of an update when we get there.

 Hi there and welcome to the National Fitting Centre here in St Andrews where Jamie you've got your new clubs we've been out for the first round with them today on the new course here at St Andrews how did you find them?

 The course or the clubs? The clubs were superb I couldn't have started out any better four powers on the bounds I thought what's the course record and then the course got tough but no I was really impressed with both the clubs and the course.

 Obviously we played on quite a nice sunny day today but back nine the wind did get up a little bit and you had to hit some slightly different flighted shots did you find that quite easy with them?

 I don't know about easy but the caddy certainly helped and the club selection that the caddy made would not have been the club selection that I made but with the combination of the caddy and the new equipment yeah I was very very impressed.

 What would you say is the biggest difference from the Maverick irons you had before to these what would you say has changed?

 I'd say a little bit more forgiving I can get the ball in the air quicker a bit more penetrative flight slightly longer so happy with that.

 Yeah I mean when we did the fit and the distance wasn't really something I bothered about it was more accurate obviously with the apex with that nice feel that it gets and like you say that forgiveness as well so you've got the forged feel which is obviously awesome forgiveness is great too and great that you're finding that on the course.

 So we've got the ultimate test tomorrow haven't we? Indeed. Tell everyone where we're playing.

 That will be the old course at St Andrews. The most famous golf course in the world.

 Indeed 9.30. 9.30 in the morning hopefully we won't drink too much tonight and we've got on a good performance tomorrow but for now let's hit a few more shots let's you know make use of this time that we've got in the academy here at St Andrews and hopefully have an awesome round tomorrow.
