Affordable Home laser printers are fine for office type documents. Not art or photograph. You’re better off getting a used A4 laser printer from the past 5-6 years + and a new A3 ink tank printer for your son. For the laser Ive found the Brother HL is decent and the WiFi connection to print docs from Mac and IPhone via AirPrint has been problem free for me.

We recently got a Brother HL-L3290CDW, and it's fantastic. These things are smaller than you think. It an inch, maybe two deeper than our old Epson XP-430, not really wider. The only significant size difference is height.

If you don't want an automatic document feeder, I think the HL - L3290CDW is also a great option; it's another one I found in my research. Should be within your price range, there's a driver-only install option, and it was easy enough to set up and get going. I think the only downside is no Bluetooth printing, but it does have network and NFC printing.

Hello, The ink lifetime of this printer is very short. I've purchased this printer back in March 2020 and I spent at least $1000 on ink. I got the genuine Brother ink, yet no luck of yielding more small number of prints. Please advice on the best way I can use the printer.
