I would HIGHLY reccomend the Boss Blues driver, waza craft edition if you can get one. They are around $200 or less and the blues driver is a classic. I also have the Angry driver which is a combo pedal from Boss that combines a JHS angry Charlie with a Boss blues driver, and it has a variation of blends or you can use each variation of the pedals independently with the selector switch.

I like this pedal, but ended up returning it. It's an overdrive that gives you just enough fuzz to sound crunchy without getting lost in the distortion. Honestly, it isn't a distortion pedal, but get a Boss Blues Driver. It is the most versatile pedal for beginners and can achieve anything from a mildly distorted bluesy tone, to overdriven punk distortion. For the first pedal, I would pick that over some of the other suggestions here.
