Searching for a great rooftop box that won't blow your entire gear budget? The Yakima Skybox Carbonite is a fantastic value. This rock-solid box is another one of our absolute favorites, and we would highly recommend it. The SkyBox Carbonite does a great job of keeping our gear safe, secure, and easily accessible, all at a price that leaves some money left over to buy gear to fill it. The lid isn't really floppy at all, and the latching system indicates when the SkyBox is unlocked, making it much harder to drive away with an unlocked box accidentally. On top of that, the matte black finish hides scuffs and scrapes much better than the glossy sheen of some of the more sleek and stylish models we have tested. 
However, the initial installation is quite a pain. If you plan on leaving the cargo box installed on a semi-permanent to permanent basis, the more laborious installation procedure shouldn't be a deterrent at all. We think those who plan only to throw the box on their car for an infrequent weekend getaway should opt for a model with a bit more installation convenience.

The Motion XT above is clearly the “best” all-rounder, with a high-end fit and finish, exceptionally easy-to-use mounting hardware, and a SlideLock handle and lock system that’s hard to beat. But not every user needs the best, especially when “very good” can get the job done for significantly less. And this is the reason we see the Yakima SkyBox on more rooftops than any other carrier: for $719 for the 16-cubic-foot model ($769 for the 18 cu.-ft.-version), you get durable storage for your gear and tool-free installation that will accommodate most factory and after-market racks. And with your choice of sizes from 12 to 21 cubic feet—including a low-clearance (“Lo”) model and the narrow “12” that leaves enough room on your rack for a bike or boat—there’s a SkyBox for everyone.

The Motion XT and SkyBox are both built to withstand the rigors of the road, including rugged ABS plastic and aerodynamic shapes that taper at the rear to accommodate your car’s antenna and hatch. But details matter, and here the Yakima lags a bit behind. In particular, we’ve found that the turn handle requires a little more force than the Thule’s and isn’t as easy to operate with just one hand (it also has a tendency to get stuck when frozen). Further, while the Motion XT has one of our favorite mounting systems, the Yakima’s requires more finagling to get into place, which is a downside if you anticipate removing and reinstalling your box with some regularity. It has a dual-opening lid so your gear can be accessed from both sides of the car, and the quick clamps make installation or removal a breeze. The low weight &#40;25 lbs&#41; helps make installing it atop a vehicle easier, too. It looks fine and seems comparably durable and secure to us. 
As for compromises, this cargo carrier is on the shorter side compared to many of the other options. It has a maximum ski/board length of around 140 cm, precluding most adult skis. This also means some cars will have too wide of a crossbar span to attach this carrier to if they aren't adjustable. It has dual-side openings –- an absolute must in our minds –- and feels very solid, secure, and well-made. The matte finish and dimpled texture also do an excellent job of hiding scrapes and scuffs. 
However, a few concessions were made to keep the price lower &mdash; as is typically the case. The overall size of this cargo carrier is a bit smaller than the premium models, meaning the maximum length of gear you can carry is around 170 cm. It also looks a bit stubbier and less sleek and stylish overall than some of its pricier counterparts. Despite that, we would highly recommend this product to anyone who needs additional vehicular gear storage and doesn't want to make too many sacrifices with respect to quality and budget.
