Unboxing a 1984 Yamaha DX7 in 2020

It would be a good buy if you plan on buying better headphones in the future, otherwise it might be overkill for the 650. You could get something like a Schiit Asgard with the dac module option (so just one box) for 300 dollars instead.

For comparison, the Schiit Asgard gets 600mW @ 300 ohms with single ended, so you would get more power and you would not need a new cable. But I would definitely just get the dx7 pro if you think you will ever upgrade your headphones in the future!

I'm currently using the HD650 headphones hooked up to a Dragonfly Red. I've read a lot of reviews on the Topping dac/amp and all of them seem to praise the performance of it, esp. considering the fairly low price. I recently noticed that Drop is selling the device for a discount and immediately thought of getting it. I mainly stream my music from Tidal. Does anyone here have experience with it, do you think it would be a good pair? I'm hoping it would be a big step-up from my current dac/amp. I'm not that keen on getting a stack, I like the form factor and convenience of having one box instead of two.

Topping DX7 Pro + Sennheiser HD650 = good pair?

Can you afford to have that $400 (and perhaps in the future, more) being locked up in a box?

That said, the factory set is really good by itself given the constraints, and the digital sounds it can do tread on PPG Wave territory.

After years of wanting a DX7, posting multiple post on here asking for advice,  I finally got one for a great price $400. For the most part the only patch I really find that met my expectation is the E piano patches. I was debating getting the Wavestate before do to the fact that it does a lot of sounds I like, and while it was difficult to program a bit I genuinely like the overall feel. I want the Wavestate and personally feel like I kinda had higher expectations from the DX7. I’m afraid of selling it and never finding one for this price again. A lot of the sounds the Wavestate achieve are very similar to the DX7 as well so i wonder how anyone feels about the Wavestate. 


Also I know the DX7 has the nightmare of FM synthesis so that’s also another downside. I wanna give it a full month before I decide to pull the trigger but a lot of the sounds I have on the DX7 just don’t make me wanna play a lot besides the E piano.

Novation Peak is an eight-voice desktop polyphonic synthesizer with three New Oxford Oscillators for each voice. The oscillators sound completely analog by being high-quality NCOs (Numerically-Controlled Oscillators), but gain the flexibility of the digital domain with 17 digital wavetables. They can also become a linear FM source using either the analog-sounding NCOs or digital wavetables - so are able to cross-modulate in a recursive loop. The synth has a resonant multi-mode analog filter for each voice, and three distortion points for each voice - pre-filter, post-filter and global - in an analog signal chain.  It'S not some super feature deep dive. I just think all those videos have been done to death, so i just wanted to make a video about why i like this thing to very briefly sum up my feelings about the peak. I think it's one of my favorite synthesizers i've ever played and it's one of my favorite synthesizers i've ever owned as a musician and as a sound designer and as just kind of a synth enthusiast. I think all around the innovation peak is a hell of a choice for a synthesizer, it's very, very powerful and, ultimately to me

 You could easily create some wave tables in serum or phase plant or whatever you prefer, to work in bounce them out and then port them into the peak. So that's not really a con. Just maybe a thing to be aware of with all that in mind, i'm very comfortable in saying that if you are looking for a hardware synthesizer and you need something - that's flexible, powerful and sounds great, while not really breaking the bank and will also hold its value. I think i'm comfortable in saying that i think the peak is a damn good investment

 So, let's assign mod envelope two to this we'll go into mod envelope. Two add a quick envelope here with some adjustments. Here we can turn this into a nice growly bass line. Add some filter movement here some resonance get some of that distortion, a little bit of reverb and there we go basic fm thing

 Let'S crank some reverb and get a nice sine pluck patch going just to hear the reverb as it is we'll just go: 100 wet we'll go through each of these algorithms. For the sake of listening. This is the dry sign, [, Music ]. Now, let's bring in reverb number one reverb number two and reverb number three [ Music ] now granted: that's not the most exciting example, but i think it's important to demonstrate now: let's try those sine waves again with a reverb here

10 Reasons to Love Novation Peak 👏

  This has been a problem since launch, there's no firmware even promised for this. The Bass Station II had this same issue and was fixed with an update.  I've had two Peaks and they both do this.  To check if you have the problem load up a patch you know well and leave the unit on, check back occasionally by playing or hitting audition, does your patch sound different?  If you want your reverb to be swimming and a very important low-pass and high-pass now, the reason this is important is because let me turn this to a alright. So there is a sine wave, very rich in low frequencies. Let me bring in a wave table okay, so right now the reverb is affecting both the low frequencies and the high frequencies. I might not want that

 Already see we're getting a really cool, complex, sound that has, depending on how much I bring in oscillator 2 [, Music ] a degree of digital to it. That makes it interesting. You know everyone's different when it comes to sound design and what they want to do with sound design, and I find out, I really really love being able to add a certain amount of digital to like warmer sounds and combine them together to get the best of Both worlds, so if you have direct direct when you turn this up, it's just going to turn up the parameter, and there are some things available in here that you don't have available in other places. So, for instance, frequency modulating oscillator one with oscillator 2 [, Music, ], [ Applause, ] same thing, with two to three [: Music ] and 3: 2 1 [ Music, ], [ Applause, ], [, Music, ], [ Applause, ], [, Music ]

 Obviously you have access to three oscillators. So that's quite a bit. That'S a lot: that's a lot of oscillators. Let'S move over here, oscillator mixer, one two: three! We have ring mod between one and two [ Music, ] and noise, and also use your VC a game before it goes into this section

 The resonant bump is on the bottom. Another thing I like to do is sometimes turn up the resonance just a little bit on a filter, sound, so there's my saw going through the 24 DB filter with it completely open. It sounds pretty good, but if I turn the resident's up, I'm gon na get that high frequency bump on the top of where the the filter is. So I can introduce some Sparkle how I was without [, Music ], so just different ways to shape the sound that are nice, glide glides notes, [, Music ]

The Novation Peak (Walkthrough and Review)

Right now I'm using a Novation Peak. Love the sound, but it's more powerful than I need, and carrying a desktop unit + keyboard to rehearsals is profoundly annoying.

I'm looking for something around the same price (or a little lower) than the Peak, but with a built-in full-sized keyboard. I care more about workflow and ergonomics than having a million features, definitely don't need more than 8 voices, and am agnostic on digital v analog.

 So that's we can have an independent for each voice and then we've got a number repeats we can put into common mode, which means all of the voices will trigger at the same LFO. We can also set a number of repeats, so we could have like particularly say to repeat that if you want to do some rhythmic stuff, we can sync these to the master tempo and have a specific number of Pete's lifers in this patch [ Music ]. I'Ve got LFO, one is doing the filter. Three three hits LFO to an octave or hips [, Music ], so yeah, some nice stuff

 I mean. There'S no real denying that so, if I just straight start on one, I think they're different times and it's quite a damped kind of modulated sort of delay. If I bring the release time up, I mean there's not much that can't be improved with a massive reverb. I say I changed the second reverb time, a second reverb slot

 We'Ve also got slew, so we can round up the corners with that. Next way, we've got that the fade mode could be fade in or fade out, fade sync.
