 From snow covered alleys to steeps and low angle meadows, he loves it all.  In the summer, he owns and operates Gumption Trail Works, building mountain bike singletrack and the occasional sweet jump.

The UltraVector BC starts with a tried and true shape that has been a well-received profile in Voile’s line up for several years; a sort of Goldilocks of being not too progressive / wide, not too conservative / narrow. As my ski choices have trended towards wide, and wider, it was a refreshing change to ski something with a more “classic” design for days when conditions are less than blower. Considering these are the days that make up the majority of skiing opportunities, it was great to have something more exciting than snowshoeing, but less specific than massive powder sticks.

 A small cushion of snow to compress against a packed layer proved to be the most ideal conditions.

While this winter was a bit disappointing in snow pack in Western Colorado, the UltraVector BC whetted my appetite for more lateral low-angle exploring. If you are looking to explore terrain a bit more zesty than is appropriate for xc touring gear, or wonder what is just on the other side of the drainage you normally ski down, or live in an area where the terrain is more “rolling” than “rugged,” the UltraVector BC may be just the ticket to open up some routes you normally pass by.

The Volkl M6 Mantra has truly earned our approval as the best all-mountain ski, keeping the Mantra series atop the podium once again. With high scores across all testing metrics, the M6 transmits a magnetic and confidence-inspiring ride to the skier through all types of terrain and snow conditions. Whether the forecast is unclear and snow conditions uncertain, staying true to your “Mantra” is what we recommend. With three of Volkl’s Tailored Technologies underfoot, be prepared to tackle anything the mountain throws your way.
This year Volkl introduces their 3D Radius Sidecut technology to the M6 Mantra. Boasting three different turn radii within the side of the ski, the M6 can achieve a different turn outcome depending on skier input. This new technology admittedly took some getting used to. However, we found the tech especially helpful when merging onto a new run with more traffic or exiting a mogul field back onto the groomer. The M6 Mantra is on the damp side of the spectrum for skis. But we can’t complain when the overall result is the superior combination of stability and maneuverability that this ski offers through icy groomers, afternoon chop and slop, and deep pow days.

On the heels of the extremely successful and well-loved M5, Volkl hasn’t rocked the boat too much with the new M6 Mantra. It remains an extremely powerful and precise all-mountain option that’s perfectly happy in the hands of hard chargers at speed. Volkl did make some tweaks to the Titanal Frame construction: shorter skis now have less metal and are a little softer, while longer options are stronger with more metal. You also get the brand’s 3D Radius (also found in the Kendo below), which effectively gives the ski three different turn radii. In practice, it’s pretty impressive, and the M6 feels comfortable at everything from tight and quick turns to wide GS sweepers.

It’s a close call between the M6 and Nordica Enforcer above, and both are versatile, standout models. In parsing out the differences, the Mantra is noticeably wider at the tip (by 8mm), and its stiffer build gives it the advantage in terms of stability. But the Nordica is more comfortable in tight spaces with its nimble, easier-to-manage flex (this also makes it a better option for intermediate-level skiers). Both are excellent one-quiver options for riders that spend the majority of their time on groomers or in regions with moderate snowfall. 6'0 270lbs here. Volkl M6 Mantra 184 is what I ski, and before that I was on an older pair of Matra's. This is what you want, or something similarly stiff like a Nordica Enforcer etc.

I recently switched from boards to skiing again and am looking for a solid all mountain ski that will actually let me carve instead of just folding and sliding sideways.  I don't have much faith in the Amazon sponsored lists, and every manufacturer seems happy to say that their ski will work great, so I'm looking for real world info.

I am 6'3" and presently 260lbs and falling (down from 300).  I intend to reach a 230lb goal weight by next season.  I am mostly on 184 k2 poacher twin tips, but the whole twin thing isnt as fun as I had expected.  I have a worn out pair of 193 salomon xscreams that are old and shitty.  I ski midwest groomed/ice 95% of the time 2+ times a week with occasional real snowfall and 1-2 trips west.  I'd say I'm solid intermediate maybe a little advanced, sometimes I like to go 25-30mph according to gps.

I have been told to get skis with metal, and avoid the capped ones for ones with more rigid sidewalls.  Hoping to look late or off season because I just spent alot on proper boots.  Anyone have advice?

2023 Volkl M6 Mantra - Ski Review

 The 2023 Volcomantra M6 is a versatile all-mountain ski that can not only rail a turn on a groomer,

 but get you into the trees with way more confidence than its predecessor, the M5.

 There's no debate that the M6 exudes power on the frontside, but at 96mm underfoot, it's

 built for the hard-charging skier who likes to attack the entire mountain.

 The M6 is wide enough to blast through crud and float in softer snow, so it's more than

 capable if you want to ski off-piste, but among the 90-100mm class, this is by far the

 It's not going to be the most lively and energetic feeling ski, but its ability to

 stay locked in and shape turns at high speeds is what makes it stand out.

 Buy the Volcomantra M6 if you want a slightly wider, hard-charging, powerful feeling ski

 So we get tailored titanal frame and we get tailored carbon tip. Tailored titanal frame is pretty darn cool. Simply they took some metal out of the tip of the ski. So if you're to compare m5 mantra, m6 mantra the metal frame, especially just right in the end of the ski or only in right, in the end of the ski and in the tail as well

 Something that really kind of jumped out to me is. Is this morning we skied with uh, with a local local skier named christy who's who's, very, very good. At skiing racing background, she's been with vocal for a long time as like an athlete ambassador type position, she normally skis something like a 170 secret. I had her test the 177 m6 mantra this morning and watching her

 You know you're, probably going to take this ski off trail from time to time, just because, if you're choosing this width chances are you're going to be skiing, something other than just a groomer. So it's achieving that high level of carving performance, high level, precision and responsiveness and edge grip, while still being a relatively versatile ski. So all of that stuff carries over to this new mantra. They did a really good job of retaining what was already great about it, and to me that the highlighting characteristic of this ski has always been its precision

 So taking some swing weight out of the tip of the ski and what makes it tailored is it changes per length? So this is kind of similar to, or at least reminds me of what blizzard's doing with their true blend wood core. Basically, the the engineers at vocal are looking for ways to kind of custom, tweak the performance for each length of the ski, which i think is really cool and, and i think something that we'll probably see work its way into more and more brands in the ski Industry so take this 184 take the 184 and the 177 m6 mantra. This 184 has a longer thicker part of the metal. You know, essentially, the this portion is very similar, but this portion is longer and you know without measuring

 In that all-mountain category, maybe you have a race background or you just like that style of skiing, and you want something that's going to feel strong and responsive, but something that will also handle a wider range of snow conditions. You know late in the day when the groomers get chopped up or or even on, like a six to eight inch powder day or something like that. M6 mantra does just fine, so yeah really cool ski. It'S really nice to have

 It updated the technology and it updated the construction. And now we just get a little bit more refined ski, very similar performance, but but yeah refined and enhanced i'd say so. It starts off with the same multi-layer, wood core, that vocal uses in a lot of their skis, and then we get what vocal is calling tailored, titanal frame and tailored carbon tips. So titanal frame was introduced on the m5 mantra and now it's basically just been changed
