Victorinox Chef's Knife vs Victorinox Swisstool

I’d also throw in the victorinox chefs knife, ours has seen daily use for at least 20 years now.

This and one other tool are all I need in a pinch! Solid as a tank and shiny as a newborn star! I could even use the Spirit as a signal mirror if I had to! But seriously. It is a very, very good tool. Last weekend I even used it to frame a door and saw down bits of wood. The pliers were all that was required to pull troublesome nails and the other tools assisted with timely beer delivery helpful stabby motions when frustration took over

I'm no expert on food processors but I know a lot about kitchen knives . A good price/value/quality choice is a victorinox chef's knife (the Swiss army penknife people). They have a secret sauce heat treatment that somehow makes their stainless blades behave rather like carbon knives and so are easy to sharpen.

The leather pouch is pretty durable. The tool is pretty heavy, but feels like it's worth the $90 I paid for it. I wear the thing on my hip every day, though, and hardly feel it. It's got a small catch for each tool so you can open it only 60%ish, so if you need, say, a screwdriver at an angle, you've got some stability - a nice touch

The blade does not seem to stay sharp for very long. I was surprised that after all the reviews I thought this would be a good knife. As it turns out it is not.

Its so stiff that it takes time and attention when you want to use the blade. Closing the handles with the knife out is seriously not easy.

So, this is a softer steel knife. Meat processors love these because the quality is very good and the softer steel is easy for workers to hone quickly. It is easy to hone right back to a razor. As long as your aren't attempting to chop through a bone with this, you likely will never need to use a whetstone

I don’t like any of the cases on either brand, and I don’t believe that cases should be a factor when choosing because none of them will hold up as long as the tool, which very likely will last a lifetime, or until you lose it to the TSA.

WHY oh WHY did they use such an unattractive, down right UGLY handle on this knife!!! Plus, mine arrived dirty and I can tell in no time at all that it would continue to be dirty. It looks horrible in my knife rack. Maybe it's a good knife (didn't try it) but I wouldn't keep a knife that looks that ugly. I thought it must be a protective coating because I couldn't believe that was the ACTUAL covering on the handle

My only complaints are that the handles need to spread too far for the pliers to open. Even with decent sized hands, it's hard to apply good grip pressure on all but smaller sized objects. And I wish it had scissors.
