Trek Roscoe. About the same pricing and same components as the grand canyon. Just got one for my wife yesterday who Started mountain biking.

Roadie here looking to get into MTB after already getting into gravel.  

Sorry, I know questions like this have been posted before. But just looking for any new input since most of the posts I found in search refer to 2021 or earlier Model Years and it seems like new tech/bikes/builds come out practically weekly.

Looking to spend not more than $1500 or so. Riding around where I live is probably split between "Trail"/"XC".  Probably a more "trail", but gotta climb everywhere.  Ideally also looking for a bike that I won't be itching to spend money to upgrade components. (I know nobody "needs" to buy upgrades, but come on... we know what we are...)

The [Grand Canyon 7](https://www.canyon.com/en-us/mountain-bikes/trail-bikes/grand-canyon/grand-canyon-7/2617.html?dwvar_2617_pv_rahmenfarbe=BU%2FBK#all-components-section-tab) comes in around $1300. SRAM SX, Dropper Post, Judy Silver Air Fork. Not sure how Canyon works, but on the Canada site the also list a [Grand Canyon 8](https://www.canyon.com/en-ca/mountain-bikes/trail-bikes/grand-canyon/grand-canyon-8/2619.html?dwvar_2619_pv_rahmenfarbe=GY%2FRD#all-components-section-tab) which I don't see listed on the US site.   Looks like the upgrades from the 7 are SRAM SX to Shimano Deore 12, and the Judy fork to a Fox 34 Rhythm.  Price converted to USD is just over $1500. That would actually probably be perfect for what I want. From what I've read SX and the Judy fork are "okay", whereas Deore and the Fox would be a definite step up. But, I don't know if I can actually buy it.  Canyon Canada also gets a [Stotic 3](https://www.canyon.com/en-ca/mountain-bikes/trail-bikes/stoic/stoic-3/2660.html?dwvar_2660_pv_rahmenfarbe=GY#all-components-section-tab) at about $1400 (converted to USD), wheres the US site only lists a Stoic 2 ($1200 but 10sp &amp; no Dropper post), or a Stoic 4 ($2000= more than I want to spend).

The other option I see around is the [Polygon Xtrada 7](https://www.polygonbikes.com/product/mountain/xtrada-7-4/). Their US dealer BikesOnline has it around $1k. Comes with Deore 12 and thru-axles. But the fork, Suntour XCR32 Air, (from what I've seen online) seems to be a bit of a let down. Though not sure if it would feel like that to me, who's used to rigid road bike.  Also it isn't  15x110 spacing like the Canyons.  So any Fork upgrade I assume also means you need new wheel/hub as well. The Xtrada also has 27.2 seatpost and doesn't come with a Dropper. So, $1000 upfront, but get a Dropper (what are they like $150 give or take?) and it inches closer to the Grand Canyon7 in price while not having as nice a fork (but does have Deore 12). Not sure what a fork upgrade would cost/if there are any Forks worth upgrading to that would have the same 15x100 spacing.  

As an aside, what does it take to upgrade from something like a Deore 10/11sp to 12?  Just cassette and adjust the Deraileur?  Or do you need new hubs, Deraileurs, shifters, etc?

Anyway, apologies for the wall-o-text.  A bit bored at work here on Friday and maybe I got a bit carried away hahah. Thanks in advance for any input!

Is there a better "budget" MTB out there than the Grand Canyon 7 that is available in the US?

Just got the bike a couple days ago and today (July/9/2022) I went to Culham Trails in Mississauga and had a blast. 

I would buy the bike again

 My only complaint of the 2021 Roscoe 8 was that the front was a little heavy. Other than that, great bike! I think the 2022 model will be even better. 9/10 would recommend.

 It'S clearly um something top of the list of priorities for an adventure bike, but we'll get into performance in the little moment. But let's flip the bike around and show you some other cool details on this bike. Turning the bike around, we can see some really well thought out. Features that show specialized have done their homework

 So you effectively have a longer bike, but with a short stem, giving you nice handling. So when you're riding very steep terrain, you have more weight behind the front wheel, so you're not as pitched over the front wheel as you are on a more road-based geometry and just give you a much calmer, much more stable, feel in those rowdy rough corners. When a normal bike might be bucked off the saddle, this bike lets you carry more speed and carry more confidence into those sections where you can be challenged to get the bike down cleanly. So the geometry is a real asset, nice and calm at high speed, nice and stable

 The right clothing is really important at the time of year. To keep you warm and dry on a bike and that's a neat segue to the sponsor of today's video giro. Now jiro have been making helmets since 1985, but more recently, branched out in the footwear and cycled clothing and today, i'm wearing the latest autumn winter clothing. Starting at the top with a syntax, mips, helmet, it's lightweight and well ventilated and the rock lock 5 retention system is really easy to adjust

 But for now this is one of the best groups that you can get if you can afford it and then moving on to the wheels we've got the robo terra clx carbon fiber wheels nice shallow profile, wide internal width, a good platform for these pathfinder pro tyres. The wheels are excellent: nice lightweight carbon fiber wheels very stiff external nipples, so easy to maintain hubs so far. Pretty reliable and a tyre is a great, fast. Rolling

The 2021 Specialized S-Works Diverge is the MOST CAPABLE gravel bike I've ridden!

 So a lot of my trails are sort of flowing they're they're, not particularly technical. There are some drops, there's some rooty ones, but most of them are sort of wide open, fast trails that you just kind of hold on, and you can let a rip, and you can especially do that with this bike and again, that's because it feels really really In control - and i think that's a really important aspect of this - that when you're riding those trails you can just get in the drop, so you can hold on to the huds and you don't need to be on the brakes, because the bike gives you the confidence That it will smash along really well in a straight line and that's exactly what it does. So. Stability is both great at high speed, but i have also noticed that sometimes the diverge can be a bit laborious when you're trying to make a tight turn or get up and over some, particularly like twisty and tighty root, sections or you're, going when you're going slow And you've got to sort of inch your way around a technical section

 That extra length in the wheelbase was great when the bike was really heavy and gaining velocity when descending down big hills laid them with bags and likewise that slightly slower, more confident steering just lets. You lean it into a corner with confidence. You know that it's not going to like dip or twitch when it gains speed. You just know that this bike is just going to plug on on the line that you put it on

[ Applause ]: this is the specialized diverge comp carbon, it costs 3 600 pounds, and for that money you get a fact: 9r carbon frame, a future shock 2.0 model and a swap box in the down tube. So i've been riding this for the last few months. They launched this bike in may, and i've been putting the miles on it, both on-road and off-road, and these are my thoughts, [ Music ]

 So. Stability is both great at high speed, but i have also noticed that sometimes the diverge can be a bit laborious when you're trying to make a tight turn or get up and over some, particularly like twisty and tighty root, sections or you're, going when you're going slow And you've got to sort of inch your way around a technical section. It can be a bit more difficult on this bike, but it doesn't compromise the ride quality though, and i think actually the trade-off for that stability at high speeds and a particularly good on-road performance is worth it really now. The dt swiss 540 wheels have been absolutely bomb proof

 When i humble brag warning did a really cool 280 kilometer coast coast ride with my former colleague joe, that was on that bike and at the end of that enormous day, i was very impressed by how fresh i felt even over the course of a three or Four hour ride be on road or gravel with the new bike, you really do feel a difference, and that is for me where the system shines. Now, as i mentioned, the new future shock is adjustable to adjust it essentially, where your top cat would normally sit on your stem. You have a small index dial and from turning that through 90 degrees, you can go from fully open all the way to fully closed. The system is active enough without being too boggy and squishy fully open to make a difference to make it more comfortable without wallowing through its travel

 Now i haven't set this bike up as tubeless is a review bike and it's going back to specialized imminently, so i've had to set it up with tubes as standard now. This means i've had to run ever so slightly higher pressures than i would with a tubular sap to avoid pinch flats, as you lean over in you know, kind of tighter corners. You get this quite unnerving transition between the smooth section and the tread on the outside. Likewise, the tread is also pretty much useless in the wet trails we typically find here in the uk

 It was first seen on what is now the previous generation stump jumper. This essentially makes use of the fact that down tubes, quite big these days and beneath the down tube bottle cage, you've got kind of like a plastic port with a really sturdy hinge which allows you to stuff multi-tools burritos jackets trail finds. What have you? My one? Criticism is leveled at the actual plate which forms the door to the swap box. This is a really small thing, but it did kind of annoy me these small nuts, which sit on the base of the door to the swap box

 The whole system runs on a set of roller bearings and there's next to no stiction at all. In the system, even when you're riding over relatively smooth gravel, it is very active and you can look down and see the little rubber boot satisfyingly squishing away as you go over small terrain. But for me where the bike really shines is on longer rides the difference. It makes in terms of upper body fatigue, is really noticeable even on the previous generation bike
