Trek Roscoe. About the same pricing and same components as the grand canyon. Just got one for my wife yesterday who Started mountain biking.

Roadie here looking to get into MTB after already getting into gravel.  

Sorry, I know questions like this have been posted before. But just looking for any new input since most of the posts I found in search refer to 2021 or earlier Model Years and it seems like new tech/bikes/builds come out practically weekly.

Looking to spend not more than $1500 or so. Riding around where I live is probably split between "Trail"/"XC".  Probably a more "trail", but gotta climb everywhere.  Ideally also looking for a bike that I won't be itching to spend money to upgrade components. (I know nobody "needs" to buy upgrades, but come on... we know what we are...)

The [Grand Canyon 7](https://www.canyon.com/en-us/mountain-bikes/trail-bikes/grand-canyon/grand-canyon-7/2617.html?dwvar_2617_pv_rahmenfarbe=BU%2FBK#all-components-section-tab) comes in around $1300. SRAM SX, Dropper Post, Judy Silver Air Fork. Not sure how Canyon works, but on the Canada site the also list a [Grand Canyon 8](https://www.canyon.com/en-ca/mountain-bikes/trail-bikes/grand-canyon/grand-canyon-8/2619.html?dwvar_2619_pv_rahmenfarbe=GY%2FRD#all-components-section-tab) which I don't see listed on the US site.   Looks like the upgrades from the 7 are SRAM SX to Shimano Deore 12, and the Judy fork to a Fox 34 Rhythm.  Price converted to USD is just over $1500. That would actually probably be perfect for what I want. From what I've read SX and the Judy fork are "okay", whereas Deore and the Fox would be a definite step up. But, I don't know if I can actually buy it.  Canyon Canada also gets a [Stotic 3](https://www.canyon.com/en-ca/mountain-bikes/trail-bikes/stoic/stoic-3/2660.html?dwvar_2660_pv_rahmenfarbe=GY#all-components-section-tab) at about $1400 (converted to USD), wheres the US site only lists a Stoic 2 ($1200 but 10sp &amp; no Dropper post), or a Stoic 4 ($2000= more than I want to spend).

The other option I see around is the [Polygon Xtrada 7](https://www.polygonbikes.com/product/mountain/xtrada-7-4/). Their US dealer BikesOnline has it around $1k. Comes with Deore 12 and thru-axles. But the fork, Suntour XCR32 Air, (from what I've seen online) seems to be a bit of a let down. Though not sure if it would feel like that to me, who's used to rigid road bike.  Also it isn't  15x110 spacing like the Canyons.  So any Fork upgrade I assume also means you need new wheel/hub as well. The Xtrada also has 27.2 seatpost and doesn't come with a Dropper. So, $1000 upfront, but get a Dropper (what are they like $150 give or take?) and it inches closer to the Grand Canyon7 in price while not having as nice a fork (but does have Deore 12). Not sure what a fork upgrade would cost/if there are any Forks worth upgrading to that would have the same 15x100 spacing.  

As an aside, what does it take to upgrade from something like a Deore 10/11sp to 12?  Just cassette and adjust the Deraileur?  Or do you need new hubs, Deraileurs, shifters, etc?

Anyway, apologies for the wall-o-text.  A bit bored at work here on Friday and maybe I got a bit carried away hahah. Thanks in advance for any input!

Is there a better "budget" MTB out there than the Grand Canyon 7 that is available in the US?

Just got the bike a couple days ago and today (July/9/2022) I went to Culham Trails in Mississauga and had a blast. 

I would buy the bike again

 My only complaint of the 2021 Roscoe 8 was that the front was a little heavy. Other than that, great bike! I think the 2022 model will be even better. 9/10 would recommend.

It's really easy to get caught up in the glitz or a fancy presentation, but this device is so much more than a flashy screen. Its touchscreen has the natural responsiveness of a smartphone, and its Android 8 OS &#40;sorry iFolks!&#41; ensures it uses an intuitive interface familiar to most smartphone users. It's definitely a device for early adopters who know their way around troubleshooting software or devices without having their hand held over the phone. Once some of the potential hurdles are cleared, it's a sweet beast with lots of potential and more functionality coming online all the time. Perhaps the group to love it the most is the explorer group. Anyone who relies on maps and navigation to find new routes will find the rich colors and clear, easy to manipulate maps and directions irresistible. It's hard to go back to nav on other devices once you've used the Karoo 2.
The most difficult thing about the computer is the initial setup with updates and the integrations. A lot of other cycling computers lean on their apps to help with setup and integrations with 3rd parties. For the Karoo 2, the head unit is the main node for that. The app has very little functionality, which seems like efficient streamlining, but ends up causing some headaches.

Best Bike Computer of 2022 - GearLab

 As i've mentioned, the app mostly exists to seemingly send notifications from your phone to the device, and this device can handle a whole load of notifications from lots of different types of platforms. For example, it gets all of the google suite notifications. If you want to get your emails when you're out riding, but it all can also get facebook messenger, which is probably more useful, although i would say be careful because when i connected to this phone, i just started getting notifications like crazy. When i was riding along - and actually you know - that's not for everyone - let's just let's just put it like that - the app itself, although limited, clearly has lots of potential, and it wouldn't surprise me if hammerhead made greater use of this in the future, they just haven't Done it quite yet, moving on to battery life, as i mentioned before, it charges via a usbc port, which has the benefit of a fast charging system, so 30 minutes charge in the wall socket will give you 30 battery an hour will give you 50, and it Takes just three hours to get a full charge now this has bags of potential for when you're bike packing, for example, or doing overnight trips, it just makes it that bit easier to charge up the claimed battery life by hammerhead is 12 hours, although in our experience We'Ve probably got closer to eight hours, depending on, of course, the temperature you're riding in the length of your ride and how many sensors you have working with the computer costing 359 pounds

 It has its own outfront mount, which i'll admit, is a little bit agricultural in its design, although it does provide a very solid connection with the device, but the way it really wins is it provides you with this, which is a garmin mount adapter. So this plugs into the back of the device and then that can plug into any garmin mount. You have, whether that is garmin's own out front mounts or a cage mount that you might have bought separately. That'S a really neat little trick and i absolutely love it

 Today, i'm going to give you my review open up the good looking box and you'll find the device in the first shelf and then you'll pull out the shelf below and then a draw very well engineered box, and in here you'll have a charging, cable and lanyard. The out front mount an allen key and also the adapter for a garmin out front mount. This is something that crew does, which is really smart. Is it allows you to hook it up to whatever your garmin mount is all of the setup of the hammerhead? Kuru 2 is actually done on device, which is slightly different to say the garmin edge 830, which offers you a blended option of either set up on the device or setup via your phone and the wahoo element roam, which is all set up completely on your phone

 Computer, the ham head crew 2 is a chunky device. When you look at it, it's closer to a garmin edge 830, although it is certainly wider, it has more depth to it and it is marginally larger than a wahoo element. Rome, although the bezel on the screen, is compatible to both of those, as i mentioned before, the hammerhead opts for a blended button and touchscreen setup, and the device has four buttons on each side. The top left and top right don't actually do anything when you're on the home screen

Hammerhead Karoo 2 Review | Cycling Weekly

For the test I used the GW4 44mm BT and a Hammerhead Karoo 2 bike GPS paired with a Garmin chest strap to track distance, elevation, speed and heart rate. The ride data from my Karoo 2 was first uploaded to Strava, then synced to Samsung Health. The result show that the GW4 was very consistent with the data tracked by the Karoo 2 and Garmin chest strap. For some reason the graphs for the Karoo 2 are very smoothed out in Samsung Health, but I think this happened when the data synced from Strava to Samsung Health because the graphs do not look like that on Strava

 I mean who really wants a sim card for their bike? Gps, i sure, as hell don't from a market positioning perspective, the hammerhead kind of occupies its own place with just a single product available priced at 639 dollars, which is the same bracket as the garmin edge. 830 and the wahoo element vault with some variants, depending on your local market prices, and i would honestly say i prefer the kuru 2 over both the 830 and the element. Rome. I just didn't really care for the 830s hardware and the element rome feels too expensive, especially compared against the bolt v2

 This is currently on 100 right now, if you want it to be visible in the bright sun and that really eats into the battery life, so i think 10 to 11 hours is a reasonable expectation. If you're, a heavy user with navigation and backlight on and 10 to 11 hours is only really okay, it's sort of decent for a big screen sort of flagship size, gps. But it's really not that good. When you look across the market, my least favorite part of the hardware, though, is the sim card slot in the back

 For simple usability from a living with it perspective, this is just a damn: nice gps. It'S also really nice. When you're out on the bike, there's bike profiles, people who like to tie different data screens to a particular bike with different sensors. You get an elevation tracking system called climber, which pops up to give you data on noteworthy climbs on your route and there's the standard variety of automatic features

The hammerhead karoo ii easily the most hyped bike, gps ever and the great hope for breaking the garmin and wahoo duopoly. How does it stack up and should you buy one well after about nine months of using one, i'm ready to give my final thoughts? Let'S start with the kuru 2's hardware and it's my favorite overall package of any gps with nice slim profile, quite small bezels, a well implemented, touch screen physical buttons, all around the edge and usbc charging. It'S really hard to go back from a big screen: gps once you've gotten used to them, so don't be afraid that it'll feel too large. If you buy one, if you're already used to something that's a little bit smaller now, i've always been fairly hostile to small touchscreen gps's, because they're, just such a damn pain to use

Hammerhead Karoo 2 - LOOOOONG term review

Your post sounds very roadie-oriented (if I interpret "optimized" as "optimized for speed/performance") but I'll bite -- I'm maybe a 3 or 4?

My Tiagra groupset is definitely not "optimized."  What would you call cable-actuated hydraulic disc brakes?  Maybe irrelevant since performance-wise they just add weight.

I'm riding an entry-level aluminum-framed bike -- the geometry gives it road-like handling, but the high stack and tire clearance (38mm) are a nod towards endurance.  I still have all of my spacers below the stem, so not very "optimized" there.

Just curious to know what your general attitude is towards optimization. I've got the upgrade bug and I'm looking for perspective. Specifically fitness and sport cycling, think road, cross, and gravel.

So, on a scale of 1 to 10, how optimized are you? Are you happy where you are at? Do you have optimization upgrades in mind? What and why?

For the scale, lets say 1 is you'll ride anything you can get a leg over in your street clothes and 10 being Dura Ace 9270, multiple different wheelsets with different rim depths, an aero helmet, skin suit, and an optimized power output goal for you planed effort.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how optimized is your cycling experience?

  Wahoo basically wants you to die.  Also all bike GPS make the map smaller to cram in your all important power numbers which once again confirms that safety isn't a concern. It's more important to see how many watts you are doing than it is to know where to turn at the big intersection.

Also I don't need to know when I have arrived because I have arrived.  If I am routing to mike's burger shop when I am standing in front of a shop that says mike's burger shop I don't need you to tell me I am there.

Do you use Navigation Apps to optimize your diary rides?

So for my class in Innovation at University we need to develop a Minimum Viable Product for Bike Riders in Cities.

The aim is to develop an innovation for bicycle users that allows them to know the directions to their final destination without endangering their health by looking at their mobile phones. 

Have you used apps like Google Maps? What is your experience? 

Do you think that gloves or a light that flashes different colours to indicate whether to turn left or right, to inform you that you have arrived, would be a good idea?
