 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 This is also an upgrade over the 2020 model with having the M3 15 rather than the M3 10.  I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I'll use it in country, on skate parks, bike parks etc. So i want to do some drops,  jumps etc. Like urban freeride videos. I'm looking for a cheap bike under 600$. I can upgrade it later. I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.

 Um. For a start, it seems like a sensible approach. You know, given the kind of thing this bike is designed for and as well as that, most of us, myself included, don't batter along at 45 kilometers an hour on the flat anyway. So a bike - that's specifically designed to be aerodynamic at slower speeds - seems like a pretty good idea for the mass market

. Now, at the original point of the amount launch, the delineation was simple: the madone was the aero bike and the demane was the comfortable bike and the emonda was the light bike. Now things aren't quite as simple now, because in case you haven't noticed, everything needs to be aero, so the new demane, which was launched last year got more aerodynamic at the expense of a bit of weight gain. And you know the same kind of thing is happening here, although it's not exactly the same thing sounds a bit complicated, but it's not really that complicated

 So, instead of that, trek has picked the climb of alp dues. Now the benchmark test used during the development of this bike is a notional 70 kilo rider putting out 350 watts up the 21 famous hairpins uh. The thinking is that if the bike is quicker on the climb on that climb, then it also be quicker. You know on a bunch of other climbs too right, because road speeds are lower when climbing trek has mostly concentrated on what it says are unsteady airflows during development, so, rather than turning up the wind tunnels to 45 kilometers an hour for all those

 You can see the cable routing is very neatly enclosed here now the slr bikes get a new aolus rsl vrc, integrated, handlebar and stem, which has been designed alongside the frame trek says that that new bar is 10 more efficient than the previous version, and actually that's A significant chunk of the bike's overall aero benefit that new aero cockpit is light too, with weights from 272 grams to 295, depending on the reach and the width. So the cables both for this bike and the slr bikes aren't actually internal but they're hidden as much as possible, so in the aolus bar they run in a channel underneath the bar and into the headset spaces. That means that you can swap the bars without having to cut your brake hoses and re-route everything which is pain. The spacers here on this bike and on the slr bike are split too, so you can change the stem height without any issues as well

Hands on with the brand NEW 2021 Trek Emonda - Their fastest climbing bike ever

 Now the bike is based on an old tiger or 8000 group set. I'Ve said a lot about all tegra in the past, but I gave it 5 stars when I first reviewed. It is honestly almost flawless for a group set of this price and just about as good as it gets for mechanical shifting in terms of the gearing choice, I think it's a perfect match for this bike. They'Ve got a 52-36 crank set with an 11:30 cassette in the back, so you get a gear which is spinning enough, also fast enough for the flats

 You know relatively light weight performance with decent Aero performance. It'S kind of a best of both worlds situation, where you're getting kind of a climbers wheel. Also something that's going to complement the arrow shape of the frame the wheels are. Of course, it is 2020 afterall tubeless compatible

 It is worth mentioning. The bike has a short caged derailleur, which means you are officially limited to an 1132 set. So if you want something slightly easier, I mean, if you're alpine climbing holiday, whenever we're allowed to do those you will need to go for smaller chain rings. If you want an easier gear, [, Music ]

 With a chunky head tube, it does feel really good as you heavily brake into corners and again that I kind of superfast - and I hate myself for saying it but feedback rich ride is, is totally addictive and it's just really fun. Now the only thing that really holds this bike back are the tires. Now the Bontrager are three tires themselves are fine, they feel perfectly fast plenty grit, but I do not know why track aspect 25ml tires on this bike. Other bikes in the amond range come with twenty

NEW Trek Emonda | Addictive! Fun! Uncompromising Disc-Only Race Bike

 I prefer a slightly twitchier road bike. I love the feel of you know of it. You know how it handles and corners and having that direct response, i prefer something that isn't a little bit: uh slacker, i guess yeah, okay, so so that that fast witcher response was something that i really enjoyed yeah and it's interesting because uh i try not to Look at geometry, charts before i ride the bike uh, because i can influence what you you think you feel and this one i could have sworn had a steeper head angle and a shorter trail figure than some of the other bikes were testing. But then i looked at the german sheet chart afterwards and there it was actually quite similar, and then it made me realize that it's the way they've set this bike up

 I thought they climbed really well um and at speed, possibly because of the weight they you know, held their speed, really well. Yeah yeah um, of course, shimano ultegra mechanical, very tough default. It just works. It'S a workhorse! It'S why the bikes of our field test have that group set and it's why it's such a popular price point

 You can pretty much fit any width road tire you want in there and, let's be honest, the the fitting of the 25 out of the box is probably a bit of a weight, saving uh game as well yeah. You definitely want to be riding with 20 28's on this one yeah. I think 28 felt great on this bike and it did help just that little bit with the comfort level without taking away that feedback. So it was a nice upgrade andy

 The trekker monde sl6 pro comes shimano, ultegra equipped and lands at 3799 us dollars. Anyway. All this talk of a light stiff twitchy bike really makes me want to get out and see how it performs in the hills: [, Music, ], [, Music, ] you're joining us today from ringer reef winery in victoria's high country. Now we're in the township of bright, which is a town, that's surrounded by long alpine climbs, and it really is an area that straightaway, when i think of it, i think about riding road bikes in the hills, and that brings us to the bike we have behind Us the new trek, amanda sl6 pro, which just came out and we've previously covered james, swung, had covered and reviewed the higher end top tier model

2021 Trek Emonda SL Pro 6 road bike review: for the climb lovers

 The bike has also endured some local mtb trails, and is very maneuverable on switchbacks for a drop bar bike. 

 This bike has been very durable and the carbon fork does a great job off soothing out gravel surfaces. Prior to this bike I used an old Trek X01 cycle cross bike with an added lower gear ratio and this bike is night and day more comfortable and stable. Coming from a mtb background this is all I have to compare it to. In addition to being comfortable and stable at speed, the bike is extremely durable

 During one race in the desert, I came down a couple different steep plateaus traveling between 40 and 50 mph and hit numerous washouts which had dried out and were as hard as concrete which created some really hard hits during the race and surprisingly the rims never needed truing (although I had the whole bike checked out following that race). The bike is stable when hitting loose sections of gravel/sand. The GRX group set is outstanding and is so smooth shifting, and the clutched rear derailleur does an excellent job of keeping the chain from getting dropped during high speed descents on rough roads. The GRX hydraulic brakes do an excellent job keeping things under control during the many steep gravel descents in this part of the country; my old caliper brakes on my X01 used to fade and the entire rim would get too hot to touch

Yes I would buy this bike again

 If you are entry level rider and can afford this price, I say go for it as you will be very happy! Shoutout to Bicycle Central in Glendora for always the great service.

 I was debating between this and the domane al 2, with the major difference being the components and brakes. Price point is relatively steep for someone getting into cycling but definitely worth it! I feel that I can grow with this bike and enjoy it for years to come! I also enjoy the disc brakes and more tire clearance which can allow some versatility. If you are entry level rider and can afford this price, I say go for it as you will be very happy! Shoutout to Bicycle Central in Glendora for always the great service.
