 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I have a Marlin 5, do not buy one if you intend to ride seriously. I have basically replaced everything on mine except the frame and let me tell you. I'll use it in country, on skate parks, bike parks etc. So i want to do some drops,  jumps etc. Like urban freeride videos. I'm looking for a cheap bike under 600$. I can upgrade it later. I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.

The Surly Midnight Special has the best frame quality among the steel bikes you listed and the Checkpoint is by far the best aluminum bike on your list and in it's category. I think both are a little over the top for a first bike, personally, but if you want to buy once and be done they are worth the money.


I will mostly be riding on mostly paved trails and maybe commuting as I’m located in the Dallas TX area, but would like a bike that has the capability of going on gravel roads, dirt trails, and bikepacking in the future. I’m not looking for fastest bike - especially considering most of the trails we’ll be riding on are shared with pedestrians - it’s mostly for fitness and the fact that my wife loves to bike. I’ve watched some of the Path Less Pedaled videos on YouTube and it’s definitely that type of ride vibe I’m looking for. 

I am looking for a high-quality, low maintenance, easy-to-maintain and repair bike. I’d like this bike to last me long-term and be extremely versatile.

Im not sure if this affects anything, but I’m a bit of a “Clydesdale” at 6’2”, 220lbs, and a 33” inseam. Not sure if that would affect any recommendation (tire size, better frame geometry, etc.)

Forever/Jack-of-all-Trades Bike? Help my Analysis Paralysis!

Otherwise, the Surley does that and everything else. Shit, I did some cross country riding on it a few weekends ago. Back to that geometry thing, I appreciate it because it rides just like I expect a road bike to ride, but the frame is ripe for customizing it to be anything you want. It's important to me because I bought it to do everything my carbon road bike can't, only to enjoy it more on what I would normally use my road bike for in the first place

I’m looking to downsize the amount of bikes I have and I’m looking for a kind of do-it-all road bike

Mostly I’ll be using it for commuting 2 miles, some urban riding, hauling groceries and a trailer with a kid. But I also want to be able to take it out for a long 30-50 mile ride comfortably. 

I want something with disc brakes and mounts for racks and fenders. Every LBS just suggests a gravel bike, but I really don’t need 42mm tires, that’s overkill. I’m also worried about a 1x set up. Plus the “gravel” trails near me are fine on skinny tires

Need helping finding the right style of bike

I tested a surly midnight special for similar purposes, and was stunned. The thing is quite heavy (not important if not hilly), rides fast and nimble, but has fat tires that (together with the steel frame) suck up everything. Cobblestones which have the assumed purpose of slowing down bicycles (in Antwerp) felt like hardpacked gravel feels on my road bike (i.e

Currently I ride a (\~7yo) cross-hybrid bike from Bulls. It has decent parts and does the job. I have been looking at eBikes, but came to the conclusion that my current bike is faster. Going over the 25km/h limit (Europe) with an eBike is much more difficult then with my current bike. My cruising speed on this bike is around 20-25km/h, but if I push I easily get to 30km/h and if I really push I manage to get to 40km/h (on flat tarmac).

I'm using it mostly for commuting a short distance (6km / 3,75 miles one way) and occasionally doing larger trips (20-25km / 12-16 miles one way) during weekends. We have an Urban Arrow family cargo bike which my wife uses on those trips and I'm following on my own bike. I would like to start using the bike for larger distances as well (instead of the car), but the cross-hybrid bike is not comfortable enough for me to do that. It also takes too much time.

I chose the cross-hybrid because regular city bikes tend to break easily with my driving style. I don't really go off-road, but it's not tarmac all the way. If you go fast on things like a cobblestone road a regular bike won't hold up for long.

Anyway, I'm looking for a new bike with the following requirements:

* Should be able to hold up on all types of non-offroad roads/speed bumps etc.
* As fast as possible
* Somewhat comfortable to ride for longer rides
* Not too much maintenance, I don't have much time to do it myself

Since I'm also using it for commuting I also bring along a backpack. Having a sweaty back when arriving at work is annoying, but I can't seem to mount the backpack (Peak Design 30l everyday backpack) to my bike now since it is too big/heavy. So keeping it on my back is still an option. 

I'm thinking about getting a gravelbike (like the Koga Colmaro Allroad) since they are really fast and should not knock me of my bike when it rains or there is a speedbump in the road. I could use it for long distance trips as well I believe. Am I correct their, or would you rather suggest a hybrid-race bike or tour bike for example (ignoring budget for now)?

Since I&#39;m also using it for commuting I also bring along a backpack. Having a sweaty back when arriving at work is annoying, but I can&#39;t seem to mount the backpack (Peak Design 30l everyday backpack) to my bike now since it is too big/heavy. So keeping it on my back is still an option. 

I&#39;m thinking about getting a gravelbike (like the Koga Colmaro Allroad) since they are really fast and should not knock me of my bike when it rains or there is a speedbump in the road. I could use it for long distance trips as well I believe. Am I correct their, or would you rather suggest a hybrid-race bike or tour bike for example (ignoring budget for now)?
