 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I'll use it in country, on skate parks, bike parks etc. So i want to do some drops,  jumps etc. Like urban freeride videos. I'm looking for a cheap bike under 600$. I can upgrade it later. I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.

Listen, all you on here have excellent, discerning taste. So I just thought I’d ask if you have any bike recommendations. Mainly I’ll be commuting about 3 miles a day, mostly through the city, with a couple big hills.

Any suggestions as to something well made that might not be from the big name brands out there? (Unless the big name brands are just as good)

Bike recommendations?

Extreme comfort for all road riding, with capability of doing some local trails. The best budget gravel bikes out there are pretty much the State All-Road 4130 ($850) and the Poseidon X ($700). I don’t own a standard road bike, but I can tell you that the State All-Road is every bit as capable as my Cannondale Topstone 105 with road tires on it. Goes just as fast with a budget groupset and wide, slick gravel tires

I'm looking to take up cycling as a new fitness hobby and for fun. I’m 37 now and haven’t ridden since childhood, but I'm pretty athletic and have decent endurance (soccer and track background). I go to the gym regularly, etc. 

Originally, I settled on a Specialized [Sirrus 3.0](https://www.specialized.com/us/en/sirrus-3-0/p/174692?color=279691-174692&amp;searchText=90920-7700) after a ton of research. I put down a deposit at local shop. Waiting for it to come in. 

In the meantime, I've been watching YouTube bike videos, Tour de France, etc… And I'm wondering if after a very short while I’d probably wanna do legit group rides or even race.

Ultimately, I really miss sports and being competitive (ankles can’t handle soccer anymore) and think I might want to try road racing- but I have a million considerations:

First off, my main consideration is the roads and where I can or can't ride it. I live in upstate NY (Buffalo suburbs) and getting mixed opinions from a couple friends that ride. A couple people said they don’t enjoy their road bikes because of the crappy roads here and recommended I go with the Sirrus (fitness bike, flat bars), or even a Trek Dual Sport (flat bars, front suspension). They pointed out that I might have to drive a road bike somewhere first to really use it - which I DO NOT want to do. On the other hand, I have a family friend who does iron man triathlons, road races, etc and he said him and his friends ride (their road bikes) all over WNY and just avoid certain roads. Very different opinions :/  

Second - Admittedly, I’m a bit intimidated by the drop bars and slightly unstable feeling of a road bike after 20 some years away from my BMX lol. Maybe I shouldn’t care since I assume you get over that quick? But with regards to what my friends were saying about the roads here, maybe its still a reason to lean towards a flat bar bike? Rough roads, potholes, etc. 

Third - price. Willing to spend about $500-$1000 on a fitness bike but seems like it’d be at least double that for a decent road bike- maybe more for 105 groupset and disc brakes. Maybe I’m wrong? Willing to go $1500-2500 for road bike. Or should I even spend that much? Does your first bike get scuffed up, etc? Clearly, I know nothing haha…

Lastly, it just seems like a lot to figure out and get into if you don’t have a group of friends who ride. Road bike is more $$$, more kit, more gear. Easy to just go for a fitness bike and be able to take off from your house with less things to worry about.

FITNESS BIKE or ROAD BIKE? Many noob questions…

 It’s a great bike for the price. I say it’s the best sub-$1,000 gravel bike on the US market.

It’s the same stuff. I have a Topstone 105 and a Poseidon Redwood and I am very pleased with the budget State All-Road 4130. It’s a great bike for the price. I say it’s the best sub-$1,000 gravel bike on the US market

This is my first “adult” bike and my gift to myself for completing my masters.  I went with State because I heard they’re great value for the money.

My bike has ~40 miles on it, and I’ve had to stop really often to retighten the saddle, it would slip and jam the front into me.  I took it apart and the teeth are totally stripped out - it was initially torqued to spec and I carry self-recovery tools with me, even wrenching it down tight won’t help anymore and I have hover over the seat and barely rest right in the middle

Today I rode about 5 miles and my left pedal arm, initially meticulously assembled and torqued to spec came loose, I tightened it and right as I got home it came home.

The chain randomly slips gears, the bike shop said it’s assembled correctly as far as they can tell.

I really want to love this bike but I’m so disappointed in the quality so far,  barely worth $600 - even in 2022 inflation adjusted dollars. 

Can someone help me solve the issues with the seat and pedal arm?  Any tips for enjoying my bike?  Thanks!
