 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 This is also an upgrade over the 2020 model with having the M3 15 rather than the M3 10.  I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I'll use it in country, on skate parks, bike parks etc. So i want to do some drops,  jumps etc. Like urban freeride videos. I'm looking for a cheap bike under 600$. I can upgrade it later. I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.

I bought them because I had many other bikes and I want on all my bikes to use the D system SP DSL, because it's a lot easier for me to have two or three pair of shoes and not was not a lot, not many for each bike. To head a different system, so I choose, I choose: I choose this Shimano SPD SL system over the one from look, because it's a lot wider and the cleat gives you more stability. It'S a lot easier to walk with with cycling shoes using a Shimano Plzen

 Ever carbon fiber, but is not a lawyer either it's the lighter, is lighter than the raw version, and the only is only on this. What I read in on some reviews, if you'll crush this, I'm not sure how? How will how well, how is instant it's in the crash, I read the somewhere. Chunks of this reason can can't can fly on auto crash, but of course, what nothing nothing is design to be crashed and remain intact. What can I say these are light enough

[Review] Shimano R550 SPD-SL Pedals

These are great low cost SPD-SL pedals from Shimano, coming in significantly cheaper than the cheapest "series" pedals (105s), but essentially being the same (similar composite body, although not carbon composite) except maybe a few grams of weight and the slightly less fancy bearing mechanism. Any roadie will tell you the important thing with these types of pedals is to get ones with the metal plate, as the plastic ones wear out quickly. Therefore if you're you're going to get SPD-SL pedals, I'd recommend these as the best bang/buck.

 It'S got the right one out there and, as you can see a very good-looking pedal very nice, they actually look quite a lot like a 105 feet or even an all, to grow pedal. Of course, Shimano do trickle down a lot of their technology down to a more basic law or better price componentry. So you can see you've got stainless steel footplate deal, which of course, is replaceable nice easy wide, apparently they've improved the entry and exit point there and, of course, you've got your tension adjusts just there hustle and then on the back there, the indicator, so you can Adjust the tension just the way you like it, so there you have it. The Shimano are: 55

 These are that sh 11 cleats, the yellow variety, with the six degrees of float, I believe with those. So let's go ahead and take a look at one of these pedals.  Are 550 SP d.
