 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.

If you can get these specs on a bike you’ll be solid for a long time. Any cheaper and you might be unhappy, particularly with the fork. Cheaper rockshox forks work just fine but don’t have a standard chassis and just aren’t built as well. 

Edit: I don’t know where you’re located, but at this budget one of these would be nice: [URL REMOVED] and other mail order brands have nice cheap hardtails as well. I’m not sure if you have a preference for Jamis, but they’re not as big of a brand currently in MTB.

I’m looking to fill a gap in my bike stable.  I'm primarily a road biker, and I have a very nice road bike that I’m very happy with and am very protective of.  I also have a Frankenstein’s monster of a bike that I use for commuting.  Finally I have an older hybrid that I used to use for more casual rides with the girlfriend, or when the weather/road conditions are too gross for my roadie.  However, that bike has found a nice home on my indoor trainer, and I’d like to keep it clean and set up inside rather than having to do a deep clean every time I use it outside, and that’s the gap I’m looking to fill.  Naturally, my first thought is a gravel bike, but that feels like it overlaps a bit too much with the road bike and this seems like a good opportunity to perhaps enable some off road riding.

I don’t know anything about mountain bikes and my head has been swirling with all these new categories and components and standards that are involved.  I think I’ve narrowed it down to a hardtail XC or trail bike.  I’d like to make sure to buy enough bike to not immediately outgrow it if I do get more into mountain biking, but I also don’t want to buy way too much bike.  I’d love some advice about what components are actually important.

Purpose:
Road rides in the cold and wet and sloppy; casual rides on road and gravel/fire roads/rail trails; off road trails, probably more flow style than anything, I don’t really seem myself taking any huge jumps.  I’m not too concerned about using flat bars for all this, I’ve used them for years and I have a road bike if I really need to go super fast.

Budget:
I’m willing to spend what it takes to get something quality that I won’t grow out of immediately.  I’d ideally spend ~$1200-$1300 but am able to go up to $2000 if it comes with a significant increase in quality.

Questions:
What components are actually worth extra money, and what level should I be tarteting?

Fork: 
I know I should be aiming for air suspension, but am confused about other aspects.

30mm stanchions or more?  I see a lot of bikes at this level come with Rockshox Judy level, would it be better to target something beefier like the 35?

100mm/120mm/140mm/more?  100mm seems to be the XC bike standard, but I feel like that would be more limiting if I ever aim for more technical trails.  Is this something I should worry about?

Wheels:

27.5 vs 29?  Since I am looking to ride more road/gravel/flow type routes, it seems like a 29er is the obvious choice.  Is this right?  Am I limiting my search too much by not looking at 27.5” bikes?

QR/Thru Axle/Boost?  I see that a number of bikes in my price range come with quick release axles but I also see recommendations online to go with thru axles with boost spacing for better strength and to keep my options open for future upgrades.  Is this actually important?  Should I be spending up to make sure to avoid QR?

Geometry:
It seems like head tube angle has a big effect on ride feel.  Is there a sweet spot I should be looking for?  Is 68ish on an XC bike too limiting for trail?  Is 65ish on a trail bike too slack for the road?

Drive train:
So far it looks like bikes in my price range come with SX Eagle or Deore level, but I’m seeing 1x10 all the way up to 1x12.  It seems like the 1x12 is the most modern and obviously provides a bigger range, but would I really be too unhappy if I end up with 1x11 Deore?  Would it limit me too much for future upgrades?  Should I be looking to make the jump to XT or GX?

Options:
I know this is going to be entirely dependent on what I can actually get, but here are a few models that are jumping out at me.

Polygon Xtrada 7 - seems to have basically everything I need at a very attractive price.  Fork seems like it might be a bit mediocre, is 120mm travel too little?  Also doesn’t seem to be available any time soon.

What's actually important in a new mountain bike?

Shimano Deore 11-speed drivetrain. No sense in going to 12 speeds, the new 11-speed has 11-51tooth cassette. Get a Shimano Deore XT shifter for the multi-shift capability and instant release.

Also, 203mm rotors and 4-piston hydraulic brakes are nice. Shimano Deore is a great budget-friendly option that doesn't sacrifice performance. I find them to work beautifully on even the gnarliest of downhill trails.

It is going to be 70% trail and 30% enduro. Any suggestions on any specific parts I should include?

i have a bomber z2 which has been fantastic. little more stiction then some of the higher quality models but half the price and provides great feel/traction and suppleness.

I’m pretty new to MTB and I got my marlin 6 a little over a month ago. I’ve put pedals and a short stem on it and am loving it but I think it’s time to upgrade to an air fork. Does anyone have recommendations of worthy upgrades that will fit my bike?

Fork upgrade for my 2022 trek marlin 6

Wasn't bad and did the job for learning. But extremely heavy due to the coil damper and didn't have any of the supposed plushness of high end coil forks. (Although it did have a yellow warning sticker on it!)

Peoples Opinions on the budget SR Suntour forks

I'm thinking the Bomber Z2 would be a good option, but would be open to spending a little more and getting something like a Pike Select or Fox 34 Performance. Is there a substantial difference in ride quality between these? Or is there a better fork that I'm not considering?

Have it on my Vitus hardtail and having come from bikes with suntour/ cheaper end, stiff coil forks. This is a night and day difference in terms of providing confidence on the trail and easy adjustability. It's really brilliant at handling big hits off jumps/drop offs and encourages some fairly wild riding! 

It's clearly designed for simplicity/ease of use and has a nice virtual lockout via the sweep RAIL damper for climbs and adjustable low speed rebound.
