 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.

 Let'S talk about one of the first big improvements in this tire, and that is installation. I had so many friends who i kind of convinced to buy these tires because i was like an evangelist for them only to have them, buy them and not be able to mount them onto their wheels or come back and say dude. These tires are amazing, but it's really not worth it, because these were such a nightmare to mount onto my wheels. Now, the new hookless compatible tires are a little bit more pliable they're easy to work with

 I'Ve put well over 10 000 miles on multiple sets of these tires and they've been absolutely phenomenal. They'Ve been fairly bulletproof. I think i can count on one hand the number of punctures that i've had most of them have been sealed by sealant, and i can remember only one time that i've been climbing and i've had an issue where a piece of shale rock kind of sliced, the Tire and i had to install a boot other than that these tires have been fantastic out of curiosity. What are your favorite road tires drop

 Now i don't have enough experience on them to say that they are more puncture resistant than the outgoing version, and i think it's going to take a while before we get some real world experience on these, because they do just go so long. So are these better than the outgoing version? Are they lighter? Yes, the scale proves that do they roll faster well, they feel like they roll faster, although some of that may be placebo from reading continental's marketing and selling points. I do, however, think there are two big wins for this tire. The first is that it's now hookless compatible

Best Tubeless Tire? Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR

 Trial tires such as the vittoria corsa, speed, tlr or the schwalbe pro 1 tt, and i've already taken it on some pretty rubbish roads thanks to our lovely video manager felix and have yet to experience a single puncture in over three months of use, touch wood. Nevertheless, this is still a tire balanced for speed and grip, rather than puncture protection, though, if you abuse it its relatively thin casing and tread, won't offer the fit and forget experience of a winter road bike, tire or a dedicated, gravel bike. Tire so just be warned with all of that out of the way, let's move on to my rolling resistance testing. Now, when the gp 5000 tr launched continental claimed that it was 20 faster than the gp 5000 tl indoors on the rollers, however, my testing showed a small but consistent advantage to a set of lightly used

 A set of tires with a lower rolling resistance should all else being equal record a faster climbing time for the same power output. I road seated for the entire climb, with my hands on the brake hoods and held as consistent a body position as possible throughout each run. Both sets of tires were set up on the same 154 aerodynamicist wheels with the same victoria latex, inner tubes and inflated to the same pressure of 65 psi. The only thing i changed between the runs was the tyres and the results showed

7 percent. I targeted an average power of 250 watts, then recorded the time taken to complete the two kilometers. A set of tires with a lower rolling resistance should all else being equal record a faster climbing time for the same power output. I road seated for the entire climb, with my hands on the brake hoods and held as consistent a body position as possible throughout each run

 In a nutshell, then it's pretty much a draw. What'S the bottom line then well, the claimed decrease in rolling resistance versus the old gp5000tl appears too good to be true, but the continental gp5000 str nevertheless remains a benchmark, tubeless road bike tyre. It strikes an ideal balance of low rolling resistance, durability and puncture protection. That makes it extremely hard to beat that is now compatible with hookless rims and is available with a choice of black or tan sidewalls plugs

It ranks all the tires based on their lab tests and they're supposed to be impartial, independent and their results are actually um quoted by and documented by many other sources. So this this is, i think, a reliable source

 You don't need the big big 32, just my opinion on the roadside. Obviously, if you're in dirt, you know if you got 47, millimeter 650 clearance, hey wonderful right! So um those are kind of the no. I want to check my notes and just make sure i've covered everything, but um, that's probably the most important things that i wanted you to know about this tire, but um, one of the things i want to do now or the next thing i want to do Now is, i want to be able to to weigh them for you so that you can see uh for yourself, and so i'm gon na grab the uh camera and just uh excuse the transition. So this right here is the str tire

So this this is, i think, a reliable source. They said they couldn't find that 20 reduction in rolling resistance in the new str tire. Unfortunately, i don't have a 28 tl tire to weigh with the str because well covid and they're all sold out right. So i don't have a 28 tire to compare 28 tubeless and 28 str, but that's pretty interesting
