 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 This is also an upgrade over the 2020 model with having the M3 15 rather than the M3 10.  I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I'll use it in country, on skate parks, bike parks etc. So i want to do some drops,  jumps etc. Like urban freeride videos. I'm looking for a cheap bike under 600$. I can upgrade it later. I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.

 The details are the inclusion of removable mud guard mounts. these neat additions to the thru axle caps integrate threaded bosses for full length guards and a removable bridge for the seat stays. The aero fork is also drilled for a guard mount on the crown. This, along with a rear light mount that replaces the bottom section of the saddle rail clamp are both very, very well thought out additions that give the Caledonia year-round ride appeal without compromise

 At 6 610 pounds, the 5 isn't cheap by any standards. Yes, it's very, very well equipped, and you won't need to change a thing bar setting up those tyres properly. But it's still a pricey bike and one that's seen an 800 pound rise since its launch. If you can live without Di2 then the Ultegra model is cheaper at 5 589 pounds and it has the same carbon wheels and kit

 Now, the other issue is price. This is something that's been compounded this year with global shortages and a myriad of other reasons. At 6 610 pounds, the 5 isn't cheap by any standards. Yes, it's very, very well equipped, and you won't need to change a thing bar setting up those tyres properly

2021 Cervélo Caledonia 5 Review | Endurance Comfort, Race Bike Speed

 Firstly in its ride quality, but also makes you feel comfortable in the riding that you're doing. You know that might be riding at speed descending quickly. You're just gonna have a better time if you don't always feel like you're on the edge. I'm not a racer, you know, I'm not performance orientated

 Now on the Caledonia 5 in a size 56, which is what I ride. it is a thousand and twelve millimeters long. If you compare that to the Specialized Roubaix, which is a bike, I'll be referring to you quite a lot in this review as it's a sort of market leader when it comes to the endurance performance hybrid that has a wheelbase of 994 millimeters and that's in a size 56 as well. So you can see that the Caledonia is significantly longer now

 The Caledonia is also marginally more aggressive than the Ruby, and I'm just going to refer to my notes for this bit. so it's reaching a size 56 is 387 mil compared to the 384 mil of the Roubaix, so it's that little bit longer. And now to compare the stack: the stack of this bike is 580 millimeters compared to the Roubaix 603, so it's that little bit shorter. So overall, it's a slightly more aggressive position to compare that to the Cevalo R3, which is the less aggressive of the R series

 So they issue the bike with two different size bearing caps, which is this little bit here that sits on top of the head tube. You can either get that in a seven mil or a 22 millimeter bearing cap, and that means you can run it as slammed as an R3 or as high as a C3 endurance bike, depending on your preference. And because these spacers are split spacers, it's really easy to set that up as well. So moving on to the specification

 I mean, we just touched on it before, but for me, I thought it would be even more compliant than what it actually was. I felt that it wasn't quite as smooth as perhaps they could have made it, and I believe Cervelo's done that to keep it feeling like a bit more of a performance bike. And of course, they did design this for race use at Peru Bay, so it has been designed with professional use in mind, but personally I would have liked to just felt a little bit more isolated from rougher surfaces. And an interesting point is that the higher end model so the Caledonia S, which is the the top tier version actually features like a flexible carbon fiber D-shaped seat post, whereas the model we have has an aluminium round seat post with basically no give in it and I think that difference there would would be the difference that I'm looking for just to completely eliminate that buzz

 So I guess speaking of upgrades, is that a good place to talk about some of the upgrades that you might potentially look at to make in addition to the wheel set? Yeah, I think The Wheels is it right? Like, I can't really fault anything else on the bike. like every everything else even uh, Cevallo's own stem, it's It's fairly simple, but it's it's It's well integrated. It comes with its own computer mount. It looks good

 It's uh, hits the scales at 1750 grams, which isn't a bad figure, but it's not really impressive either. Uh, but for the price of this bike, you're paying more for the fact that it's got Shimano, Ultegra, Di2. It's more expensive than the other bikes were reviewed and yet it kind of has the crummiest wheels of all of them. So I just I couldn't help but feel like, uh, it needed a better wheel set for the money

 This 54 centimeter test sample weighs at an actual 8.55 kilograms without pedals and comes stock with 30 millimeter tires shot on Dt Swiss E 1850 23 spline wheels for comparative testing purposes. While in Victoria's High Country, we fitted all the road bikes with the same continental Gp 5000 tires in a 28 millimeter size and we'll be testing this bike with 32 millimeter Gp 5000 tires as well.
