 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I have a Marlin 5, do not buy one if you intend to ride seriously. I have basically replaced everything on mine except the frame and let me tell you. I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. I'll use it in country, on skate parks, bike parks etc. So i want to do some drops,  jumps etc. Like urban freeride videos. I'm looking for a cheap bike under 600$. I can upgrade it later. I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.

 I talked a little bit about the slightly mountain bike inspired geometry, and I do think that that long reach combined with a short stem and a slightly wider than road standard bar adds up to very, very confidence inspiring handling. The joy of a bite like this comes in the ability to mix things up so you can set off on the road, then dive off into a fire road taking a bit of single track. try different types of gravel and it all kind of works. I think Canyon's really nailed that sort of jack of all trades thing without making it a master of none

 Had to do lots of stay bending and the hardware is a non-standard size, but it is possible. However, Canyon sells its own mod guards, so if you do want them, make your life easy and get those. This is not a weight weenie bike, but if you're interested, Canyon claims that the frame weighs 1540 grams, which is 520 grams more than the Grail Cf, which is the carbon model you may remember. when I reviewed the more expensive Canyon Grail Cf with its wacky biplane handlebars, that I took issue with Canyon's sizing recommendations

 On paper it's 405 millimeters, but to put that in context, Canyon fits very short stems across the range. You have to take that into account when you're comparing with other bikes. 2021 Canyon Grail 6 Review | More £££, Still A Brilliant Gravel Bike

 Sit, you got your hands in the hoods it feels very good Perman drops still feels good on the tops, feels good and you don't notice a handlebar at all apart from when you get off the bike at the cafe. I Think Canyon should be applauded for taking this handlebar from initial sketch idea to final production and putting it on sale and put it out there and dealing with all the naysayers and haters out there on the internet saying it looks ugly and rubbish and stuff. So yeah, well done. Canyon I applaud your bravery, your commitment to this distinctive, innovative design

 Fast roll and ties like wheels get a nice lookin frame I Loved it! Blue, black, lightweight, stiff and even even the handlebar has almost won me over after several months of testing. but I'd love to see a regular normal handlebar and stem offered in this range. I Think me really interesting to see how the bike would look and perform with a normal hand bar and stem setup. I Think they'd probably increase their sales a bit if they offer that as an option and kept this one people

Canyon Grail CF SL Review - Fastest gravel bike you can buy in 2020?

 It's unmistakably a canyon carbon frame. This is the SL version, which is the cheaper carbon, so it's a little bit heavier and lower grade than the top spec SLX model, but in terms of overall shape, it's absolutely identical in geometry it's the same and it's got the same kind of comfort giving features. so obviously you get the standards dropped stays which had deflection at the rear and it's a skinny seat post, so there's plenty of flex at the back to add comfort when you're riding over bumpy surfaces Less typically there are actually mud guard mounts on this frame. We've lambasted Canyon in the past for not pushing ramps on it's more versatile models like the Indy race range, but the ground does have them

 But you cannot live with the idea of the hover bar. There is the aluminium model as an alternative, which is a much more conventional frame with a completely normal shaped bar. The aluminium model is a good bit cheaper. it comes in a variety of specs, but the equivalent Grx model is a bit over 500 quid less than this carbon bike, which is two thousand and forty nine pounds in the UK plus thirty to 99 pounds delivery in the UK which we should mention because delivery is not optional with a Canyon because they are online only
