 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 This is also an upgrade over the 2020 model with having the M3 15 rather than the M3 10. So now that we've taken a look at some of the features and designs of this Trek Marlin 5 let's go ahead and find out what this bike weighs.  I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I'll use it in country, on skate parks, bike parks etc. So i want to do some drops,  jumps etc. Like urban freeride videos. I'm looking for a cheap bike under 600$. I can upgrade it later. I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.

We’ll start by saying that we didn’t anticipate our top gravel bike pick being an aluminum-frame rig, but the Cannondale Topstone 1’s versatility, smart build, and competitive price tag won us over. In terms of design, the Topstone features the kind of premium aluminum frame that the brand is known for, a gravel-specific Shimano GRX drivetrain complete with hydraulic disc brakes, and appropriately wide wheels for soaking up bumps. Its balanced geometry also hits a nice sweet spot of responsiveness for climbs and road riding with a relaxed and confidence-inspiring feel on the descents. The cherry on top: the mid-range “1” manages to undercut much of the competition in price at a reasonable $2,150. From weekend gravel rides to daily commutes, the Cannondale Topstone is an excellent option.

The aluminum frame doesn't come without compromises, however. At about 22.5 pounds, the Topstone certainly isn't the lightest gravel bike on the market and likely won't be the first choice of speed-focused riders (if this sounds like you, the extra $450 for the carbon Giant Revolt Advanced 2 below might be worth it). And we’d like to see higher-quality rubber that’s tubeless-ready (they recently switched the tires to Vittoria from WTB’s Riddler, which leads us to believe it was a supply issue). However, these are relatively small nitpicks about an otherwise impressive all-around gravel bike. It’s worth noting that Cannondale also offers the Topstone Carbon with a lighter frame and their minimalist Kingpin rear suspension that helps cushion harsh impacts.See the Cannondale Topstone 1

I just got a Cannondale Topstone 1 (alloy frame) in October for just this reason. I can definitely recommend it - it feels like a road bike but the geometry is definitely more relaxed has better handling in snow and weather.

I'm looking to get her a new commuter that is more comfortable, that then can also be used for other riding. She rides so infrequently because the bike she has is uncomfortably aggressive. 

Ideal bike is something that fenders and rear panniers can go on with drop bars and a relaxed geometry. My guess is this puts us in the gravel category exclusively. We also have aspirations to do some light credit card touring together. She is only 5'0", so small sizes are a plus.

Cannondale's Topstone is an attractive choice but may be a stretch for sizing. All-City's Space Horse looks great as well, but it seems like they make so few of the two very small sizes and I'm not sure how easy it would be to actually find one.

Our local shop deals Cannondale, Specialized, and Kona, with another well-respected shop nearby dealing Trek - but we're in Western Massachusetts and can find most brands within an hour drive. Would definitely want to test ride something before buying.

 or you can get a two by ten or a one by ten or a two by eleven uh, 105 group set. Some of the companies that are doing the 105s are switching straight over to the Grx. Uh, because it's gravel specific. So no point in putting a road bike specific group set on a bike that people are going to be using off-road So that's driving the price point up here

 Rather than some of these other bikes where they come in 52s, 54s, 56s, 58s, it can be a little bit harder to determine what the right size is for you. Now you can always go onto 99spokes.com and type in the bikes of interest that you're looking to buy and compare their geometry, their standover height, their head tube angles, their bottom bracket heights, and compare the geometries to figure out if they're similar or vastly different from bikes that you currently own. So you can help better understand if this geometry in this frame, shape and size is right for you

So for this bike here, Um, I will say I I put uh, I have this Blackburn adjustable um large size frame bag on here which is great. Uh, it can take up the whole triangle if you drop it down, but right now I just have my spare inner tube pump um, tire levers

Cannondale Topstone 1 Gravel Bike Review (Likes/Dislikes)

 If you’re in the market for more of a race-oriented model, we really like Giant’s Revolt Advanced 2. With the Giant, you get a lightweight carbon fiber frame, the same high-performing Shimano 105 drivetrain as the Topstone, and generous tire clearance for large rubber. Further, the Revolt Advanced 2 features a rubber chain stay and down tube protectors to ward off rocks and debris. The $2,450 Giant is certainly harder on the wallet than the $1,750 Cannondale, but it’s difficult to argue with the bike’s carbon frame and race-oriented build

 And again, it was well-equipped for the job. While not particularly quick, the bike was easy to maneuver in traffic and along city streets, and its riding position was quite comfortable. Further, the fender mounts are a great match for wet-weather commutes, and the bike’s rack compatibility works well for those who use traditional panniers. To be clear, the Topstone 105 lacks the explosiveness and nimble feel of a dedicated road bike, but the balanced riding position and smart frame features add to its versatility
