Working outside -40C help needed

 I immediately put it in the washing machine - cold water, with Tide Coldwater detergent, normal cycle (it’s 100% merino wool).  Pulled it out to hang it to dry, and it still smells. What do I do?  Not only do I not want to smell like that, I’m actually allergic to perfume so if I wear it with that stench it’s going to make me sick within a half-hour. Any suggestions????

Daily Questions Thread - November 29, 2021

This year's design feels boxier and fits worse. I have owned probably 15 of these shirts and the two I bought this year are just looser and drape more. I buy this as both a base layer and as something i wear to work in a casual workplace environment, and am really dissapointed that they have changed the slim and form fitting nature of this shirt. I'm 6,2" 175, and a medium has always been a great fit until this year

Ripped the tags off too soon. I'm 6'0, 180 lbs and the medium is quite loose in both torso and arms. Shoulder width, sleeve length and torso length is normal. Fortunately I know how to use a sewing machine, but this should be called regular fit, or better: sloppy American fit

3. Extra socks, you'll be drying these out over the fire for sure. I use smartwool mountaineering, make sure your boots are large enough to accommodate a thick sock.

 To be lighter, bring the tiny Gerber Hatchet, it's what I have and I use my friends Fisker for chopping bigger stuff.

Before I attempt any true backpacking I plan on doing some dayhikes and car camping trips where I have multiple back-ups when it comes to more insulation and a bailout plan. I understand that being cold in winter up here is VERY different than being cold during normal 3 season (especially coming from SoCal). 

Ok with that out of the way, I'm hoping to get some advice with regards to backpacking/camping in the winter. I just moved to MN in August and have been doing some hiking around the Twin Cities and up along the Superior Hiking Trail. I have watched a bunch of Shug videos and Boundary Waters looks awesome in winter. I am trying to read up on some more info regarding below zero camping, but would love to pool some collective r/ultralight knowledge.

* What is your layering setup when it gets well below zero overnight?
   * My current thought process is:
   * Daytime: 
      * Top - Cap Thermal, R1, Nano Air Hoody or Vest, Tachyon windshirt
      * Bottom - Cap 2, Skylight Alpha (as needed), Hiking Pants of some sort (suggestions welcome), Houdini Windpants
   * Nighttime:
      * Top - Peloton 97, Nano Air, MB Alpine Down/Mirage Parka, Rain Shell
      * Bottom - Cap LW Leggings, Skylight Alpha, Military Surplus Liner Pants, MB Versalite
* In terms of sleep insulation what does your setup look like? 
   * Does anyone know of any synthetic quilts off the shelf or with low lead times?
   * Is it worth layering quilts at these temps or is a mummy and synthetic overquilt smarter?
   * Any true zero degree bags that I should look at? Really don't want to break the bank, but also don't want to be stupid and buy something that won't get the job done.
* Footwear Suggestions? Figured I'd do a liner sock, bread bag/VBL, and then a thicker wool sock. Need advice on boots though.
* Serious question: What is the general consensus for human waste? Ground is too frozen for a cathole I'm assuming? WAG Bag? 
* Any other general knowledge/advice?

 This shirt is warm and the thickness of the fabric makes you think of fall, but I was impressed with the temperature regulation hiking out of our July overnighter spot, didn't really sweat or overheat at all. The Patagonia Capilene Thermal Weight Zip-Neck quickly stood apart from the competition in terms of warmth and breathability. Our lead tester loves this layer as a stand-alone piece for efficiently shedding sweat accumulated on fall trail runs as well as the base of her cold weather kit while rock climbing during those crisp October nights. While not a thermal weight as advertised, the polyester blended fabric and micro-grid fleece interior gave a memorable performance in terms of exceptional breathability and moisture-wicking capabilities. 
Patagonia advertises a Polygiene odor control treatment for the Capilene Thermal, but we found this layer to retain body odor almost immediately, especially when used several days in a row. And while we appreciate the thumb loops in terms of layering ability, the low-quality construction &#40;basically just an elastic band&#41; doesn't inspire confidence they will last for the life of the base layer. That said, this layer offers excellent thermoregulation and breathability thanks to the air-permeable Polartec fabric and the long zip neck. These work together to effectively dump heat and excess sweat during those high-intensity mountain pursuits.

Bought specifically for skiing but used for everyday under layer in cold. Lightweight, good fit, comfortable. Wanted warmer layer but now have lighter under layer.

Wanted warmer but.....

The feather weight is deceiving, in that the warmth factor is very high.  The fit is good and it just feels right.  All pluses, no negatives for this base layer.

High Quality Patagonia clothing

Super comfortable, fits perfectly (M - 5'10 and 168 pounds). It did a great job at keeping me warm and also being breathable, I could wear this all day, everyday.
