Relatively smudge proof. Main reason for buying this trash can was to keep the dog from getting into the garbage. The lid on this can is recessed into the top of the rim when closed, so my 100 pound shepherd can't lift the lid with her nose. Most other cans have a lip around the top that allows a dog to flip it open with their nose, then nose around in the trash

Otherwise, I like that it opens on the long side. It works in the space I need it in far better than those that open from one end. That is the primary reason for purchasing this one. It opens and closes well

It should have a hand grip on both sides for easy lifting. I ended up not liking this trash can and regret spending the big price on it but I wanted it to look nice in my new kitchen (which is finally finished). What I would like is a stainless steel can that has a lid that either swivels so I can drop trash in without raising the lid & the lid swivels back into position on its own, as is common in plastic trash cans, or, a lid that splits open in the center, then closes itself, for the same easy drop, no lid-lifting or waiting for it to open.

I found it was not hard to push at all (I have a really bad back too) and as for bulky, not at all! For the work this does and not having to continually having to fill and dump water tanks, I found that the larger tanks, which hold more, are much easier on my back. I am, however, leaving only four stars because when shopping for and considering purchasing this specific can, I was wanting the inner two-buckets--one for recycling and one for trash. I looked *carefully* at product description, specs, and reviews and it seemed that most, though not all, had both buckets, so I decided to be optimistic and buy this
