I just bought an Ugly Stik Elite. I have wanted to get a good ultralight rod since I fished on an old crappy one and had a blast reeling in juvenile salmon and a gorgeous Cutty. I have to say I am very happy with the rod so far, I have not yet had a chance to test it out, but the build quality feels excellent for the price, and it looks very smart. I paired it with an old 2500 Sienna, but I may go smaller in the future when I am not a broke boy

 But the thing is you need a fairly large sinker to get to the bottom in the sound thanks to our currents. Since I would be on a boat, there wouldn't be much casting involved. What is the largest weight I could safely put on my rod without snapping it?

 However, that comes at a price.  The rod is pretty strong, and especially light. However it lacks sensitivity, and runs a bit heavy. My ultralight Ugly Stik Elite is more like a light, and my medium heavy is almost a heavy

 I returned the ultralight ugly stik, because sensitivity is key. The medium heavy ones I kept and am very happy with, because they are mostly for bottom fishing and for using some heavy lures.  That is why I say the Ugly Stik Elite should only be bought in Medium or Medium Heavy varieties, for bigger fish, where it is simply the best rod for the price range. Medium and Medium Heavy Ugly Stik elites can catch carp, catfish, big bass, pike, and musky

One of the best rods in the price range, but a few drawbacks.

 I have been fishing Ugly Stiks for many years now, and I still have the very first one that I bought; The elite is fourth in my collection!

 You get what you pay for with this but I will say the cork butt and grip feels very good. Honestly the only reason I’m keeping it without complaints

About what you’d expect

 I use it for crankbaits, jerkbaits, jigging, drop-shotting and drifting baits for walleye. I'll be buying more of the Elite series!

My favorite Ugly stik

 Can cast right on a dime to get into those nice spots between trees, cover, lily pads, etc. Sensitivity is amazing, can feel every little snag against weeds and rocks and eventually you get the feel for it so you just learn to keep reeling gently and almost never snag grass. Have used this for catching bullhead and trout in a rod holder just watching the tip for twitches, shows every little bite. You still get some nice fights, but the rod always lets you bring it in

 but as it goes out and it arcs especially if you throw overhand, that bait will slow down so much in the air that it will backlash reels if you're not really thumbing it. So this reel throws that thing with ease. It adapts for you very, very well, and I've been very pleased with it. So, baits that are difficult to throw a buzz bait, a spinnerbait, anything that you might want to skip if you want to skip under docks

 It's got a ton of power. It's got enough drag for almost everything. You know, if it's a dedicated frog reel, you want to really lock that drag down. but for everything else? Perfect

 What I really like it for though is that it's so smooth under changing conditions. So to make a couple of casts with you, I put a buzzbait on here. Not only that, I put a plastic quad blade on one of the toughest baits to cast because this blade catches so much air when you cast it. So leaving the rod tip, it's got a ton of speed

 not completely. There are some differences, but almost identical, but this reel has dropped almost an ounce and a half. This little metanium is phenomenal. They went to Brass gearing again

Let's take bass fishing as an example since that's my most targeted species. Say you fish 4-5 times a week,  you figured out your water and you know you need to throw chatterbaits, jerkbaits , crankbaits and Texas rigs , you can use anything to catch fish on just about any technique but after a while you will realise that cheap gear will end up costing you fish and tiring you out , there are times in the winter I throw a jerkbait all day, used to use an ugly stick with a cheap Lew's reel, am hour in my arm was sore and I lost two fish and got a lot less bites because the action just isn't right and the reel just doesn't cast as well , fast forward to now, when I know I'm going to have to rely on a jerkbait all day I have a Cashion Icon jerkbait rod and a Shimano Metanium MGL , so light you feel you can cast all day without tiring your arm, now you can cast so much farther keeping your bait in the strike zone longer,  it also imparts better action on the bait which in turn means more bites and now you have a rod that will better handle lighter hooks.

I’m new to fishing and people have told me that my cheap pole catches fish just as well as the expensive ones.
