I just bought an Ugly Stik Elite. I have wanted to get a good ultralight rod since I fished on an old crappy one and had a blast reeling in juvenile salmon and a gorgeous Cutty. I have to say I am very happy with the rod so far, I have not yet had a chance to test it out, but the build quality feels excellent for the price, and it looks very smart. I paired it with an old 2500 Sienna, but I may go smaller in the future when I am not a broke boy

 But the thing is you need a fairly large sinker to get to the bottom in the sound thanks to our currents. Since I would be on a boat, there wouldn't be much casting involved. What is the largest weight I could safely put on my rod without snapping it?

 I returned the ultralight ugly stik, because sensitivity is key. The medium heavy ones I kept and am very happy with, because they are mostly for bottom fishing and for using some heavy lures.  That is why I say the Ugly Stik Elite should only be bought in Medium or Medium Heavy varieties, for bigger fish, where it is simply the best rod for the price range. One of the best rods in the price range, but a few drawbacks.

 I have been fishing Ugly Stiks for many years now, and I still have the very first one that I bought; The elite is fourth in my collection!

 You get what you pay for with this but I will say the cork butt and grip feels very good. Honestly the only reason I’m keeping it without complaints

About what you’d expect

 I use it for crankbaits, jerkbaits, jigging, drop-shotting and drifting baits for walleye. I'll be buying more of the Elite series!

My favorite Ugly stik

 Can cast right on a dime to get into those nice spots between trees, cover, lily pads, etc. Sensitivity is amazing, can feel every little snag against weeds and rocks and eventually you get the feel for it so you just learn to keep reeling gently and almost never snag grass. Have used this for catching bullhead and trout in a rod holder just watching the tip for twitches, shows every little bite. You still get some nice fights, but the rod always lets you bring it in

 Things ain't make long casts with because these reels definitely excel in making long casts. and I've actually out casts a lot of guys during on the water fishing lessons with this reel and I would say more than a couple guys I would say most guys I can outcast with this black max even with like a little shaky head like this. it's a little 3/8 sound to the black worm. I can fire this thing 40 yards on this black max no problem and so to get the best performance out of this black max through all the package, I found that I will set the braking system on the left side of the reel to about the middle mark almost in the middle, just like two dots to the right of middle and then I'll take that tension knob and I'll put it almost all the way to being tight and I'll back it off just a little bit And that allows me to cast this thing really really well

 and so for the novice fishermen, you might not be able to cast this reel as far as easily as you would with like a Shimano DC with the braking controls. But for me, I can cast that thing out there and cast a no problem. You can even let your finger off the spool like I Just sit there and really all you have to do is put your thumb on right when you cast that bait to kill the initial spool. turn the initial spool turn on

 Pretty much all of my big plugs here I've also been throwing it with a big Colorado bladed spinner bait with really good results. Okay, so I know something you're probably like. okay Johnny Why are you fishing with a $39 baitcasting reel? I'm sure you can afford the Oh with $100 reel a $200 really even. Why are you going with such a cheap real? It's just going to be poor quality

 $300 has a nice drag system. On the side it has is really smooth casting. I can cast these things a mile. pretty light, especially back in the day and so these reels are amazing

 After three short mornings of fishing, it has worn in appreciably so it casts further than when it was out of the box new. It's not the same "feeling" of quality as my Ambassadeur C3, but it catches fish just fine. I would say that you can make more casts per minute than a spinning rig, but fewer than with a fly rig. For the price it's a great rig

For every other type of reel (except fly) the quality of the reel will affect cast distance. This reel is good enough quality that I don't really think about it when I'm fishing, and it casts really well

Good enough, and the price is right

 I haven't tested the drag much, so I can't say if it's good or bad.  I'd recommend this reel to anyone, especially those new to baitcasters. The value probably can't be beat.

For me I preferred about two or three clicks off of maximum, especially when I'm casting into the wind like I am tonight and out from that backlash. and then as far as the fall of it I just kind of let it fall freely to the water.  I'm pretty satisfied. So 10 out in on that one? Fair enough. Fifth and final category: Effectiveness. did it produce the expected result? So the expected result when you're dealing with a rod and reel is to be able to get your baits back right? So you cast it out
