Pulled the trigger on this Prophet Rev2 desktop. Hooking it up to my Arturia Keylab Mkii 49. Sounds amazing. Only other synth I’ve owned is a Korg Minilogue and I didn’t love it so I sold it, and have just been using Arturia Analog Lab and V Collection 8, but this Rev2 is amazing

New Synth. Totally blown away. Amazing.

In this price range I would probably get a Prophet Rev2, which is an amazing synth that will keep you busy for years. Vintage synths like the Juno or DX7 are cool, but they have a lot of maintenance issues. I would start with a modern synth (unless you find an amazing deal for one of those).

I'm looking to buy my first synthesizer and I'm looking for something that's versatile that I could have for a few years and is max $1,500. I really likes synths like the Juno 106 and Yamaha DX7 but I'm not sure if those would be the right synths to get at this time. 

I've been using logic for years and the built-in synths and I understand the basics of a synth, so really I'm trying to move from digital to physical synths. 

I've been researching but I'm having a hard time finding and narrowing down ones that would be good for my first synth.

Suggestions for my first synthesizer

 If you like, or values the gated sequencer can either be free running like this or work on a step-by-step basis in key step mode, [, Music, ]. I think this is one of the more unique and compelling features of the Rev, and you can accomplish all this with the menus, but the software is a lot more. Usable Rev also has an arpeggiator pretty standard stuff, the old mode, if you like, and the standard arpeggiator options. Okay, let's move on to sound design, [, Music ]

 This is the desktop version which has exactly the same features as the Rev with the keyboard, but it's slightly cheaper and takes up much less space. I prefer this one because you can put it on a stand in an angle and I can hook up any key. Any MIDI keyboard that I want to it. If I want a small one that works well and if I want to go bigger, I can whatever keyboard you do choose to hook up, make sure that it's velocity and after type sensitive, because these can be modulation sources in the Rev

 I want using the mod matrix, but there's another third envelope that we can use to route anywhere else. So, let's, for example, take the pitch of oscillator of the oscillators as a modulation destination. You can affect it either positive or negatively and with delay. You can have the effect be applied a while, after you press the key, so standard stuff and there's a variety of destinations here now beside that you can also loop this envelope

 So the idea here is that I can choose a preset. Let'S say this one and then let's take another one, take this guy, for example, and then either mix so have steps that are mixed in between them or morphed in between them. So let's say take this one, for example. So it's sort of, if you look at this as the starting point - and this is the end point - you've got all the sounds in between

Review of the Prophet Rev2 by Dave Smith - is it the analog poly synth for you?

TL;DR I want something with responsive knobs and sliders that’s gonna be able to give me nice warm and interesting chord/pad sounds plus fat funky bass-lines and fun melodic runs. 

 I’m not as big on the computer-y, science-fiction-y kinds of sounds that the cs seems to produce because I don’t really make techno or EDM… although I am interested in the roughness and gritty quality of many sound effects and bass-lines found in a lot of contemporary music today. I have a reface cp coming in the mail because that Rhodes sound is a staple for me, but I need something else more synthesizery to play around with making sounds for anything from cool textures(pads) to fun bass-lines and slick melodic ear-worms. I wanted to spend about 300-500 dollars but after research it looks like maybe the Deepmind 12 would be the best fit for what I’m looking for, and possibly the most fun? I’m thinking I should save up for that. Is there anything that isn’t on my radar? I probably would want to get something with polyphony for a first synth and don’t want something like the reface dx because it doesn’t seem quite as intuitive even though the sounds can be nice

Edit: I went to Sam Ash today to see what they had to try out. They didn’t have a deepmind on the floor but I played a prophet rev2 and I could tell I would be able to get the sounds I want from that thing… and way more than I would ever need. I also played a Minilogue because I know how popular they are and it makes complete sense. That thing was extremely intuitive, cool sounding, and fun even if it wasn’t producing the exact sounds I’m looking for

What Should I Buy? /// Weekly Discussion - June 28, 2021

 For instance, I read a lot of positive comments about the Prophet Rev2, but then I’ve also seen videos from people who I share similar tastes who say they didn’t like it, and I know from experience that minority opinion of people I’m familiar with is way more valuable than a consensus of strangers. So I don’t think I would trust reviews or scores from a site like the one you’re proposing.

I've been working on the site quite a bit in hopes of making it more useful for the synth nerd (amongst other types of musicians), but here's the rub: 

**I want it to be useful beyond being _"that website that shows you what gear pros are using."_** 

You know how BeerAdvocate helps you figure out if a beer is good, or Rotten Tomatoes helps you decide what movie to watch? I'm trying to get as close to that as possible with Equipboard. 

Here's what I'm working with, just to give some examples:

UPDATE: I&#39;m still reading (and re-reading) all the feedback. Thank you all SO much for taking the time to comment, and sharing insights on the things that are important to you when shopping for a synth &amp; other gear. Couple of interesting takeaways are 1) I had no idea the 5-star rating scale was generally so disliked, and 2) I had no idea Rotten Tomatoes was generally so disliked!

But seriously thank you, I am humbled by the nice comments about Equipboard. I will definitely think on all this, and press on and continue building the most useful gear resource I can.

  So this in on paper something that's not clear, which leads me to believe it's a sonic thing, and I get that.  So I've tried listening to some videos and such and I'm pretty sure I can rule out the Rev2 as being too similar to some of things, the P-5 and the P-6 having the VCO's that are so critical.  But between the P-5 and the P-6 I'm having a bit a trouble really distinguishing things.  Can someone help me out here?

 You can route that to a number of destinations. So if we wanted to route that to oscillator octave by certain amounts - [ Music ] - oh let's make that also a random pitch or we could remo. Let'S go to oscillator, show [ Music ] an interesting about possibility. We'Ve got granularity to individual envelope elements, but also something that's really nice is

 If we go into program, we can switch the key follow off uh. If i switch on, we switch the key follow off on one of these oscillators, it's kind of handy. We can also sync between one and two other than that these are totally identical, so if we bring them both up, let's just go: two saws come out of here and i'll create a little bit of d2 [ Music ] in terms of sonics. They sound pretty beefy they're, not like hugely thunderous, but they've got plenty of stuff there

 Let'S bring the level up a bit quarter resonance [, Music, ], half resonance three quarters: full we've actually also got this drive, uh parameter. [, Music ], which helps sort of soften and smooth the cut off. It'S quite subtle, but it adds a nice bit of extra smurge and the great thing is about this: is it doesn't have a base roll-off so we're not losing bottom end when we bring the resonance in, which is always even on a polysynthetic? Sometimes you can use it as a high-pass filter effect, it's nice to know because it means that we can have those really massively resonant bassy sounds there's also um a high pass filter. If we had to use the effects, we've got effects here, i'll just dial in uh up to, i think, that's high pass there

 At the same time as modulating the cutoff another nice little feature are the lfos now, while they're quite basic and we've got they're identical in ways. Obviously one is global and one is per voice, but they do go quite high up into audio rate. So i've got the sound here which i've rooted. You can actually set the destination outside the mod matrix to any of the parameters that you can

Sequential Take 5 Poly Synth review - Sonic LAB

 Going up octaves, the Peak retains a slightly brighter sound, but again it's barely different and I could only really tell in isolation. 100% filter resonance on the Take 5 is way less shrieky, a lot more musical. I think Peak's attack envelope can go slower, but I think the releases are comparable. I'm not a huge fan of the square wave's PWM on the Take 5 - it has a really narrow sweet spot

 Closing them to roughly the same point (50%ish), the Take 5 is actually slightly brighter. Jumping down an octave, the Take 5 is has *slightly* beefier bass, but honestly I'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference in a mix. Going up octaves, the Peak retains a slightly brighter sound, but again it's barely different and I could only really tell in isolation. 100% filter resonance on the Take 5 is way less shrieky, a lot more musical

 Much easier to do that sort of thing on Peak. Peak's built-in effects are miles better than Take 5's (which lines up with most criticisms I've seen of the T5). I also noticed some aliasing/ distortion/ clipping on pure sines with the T5 if osc level was above 75% and master volume was above 50% - you really have to be careful gain-staging this thing, it really wants to be aggressive.

Got the Take 5 this weekend, and damn it sounds good. My initial impression was slightly sour on the sound, but it turned out I just needed to get used to programming it and gain-staging. Once I did, the thing really came to life.

 So if you modulate say the shape of a sound, let's see if we can do that. So here we have the lfo here controlling the shape of oscillator number one, and if i press it as just one chord, [ Music ], you can follow it along very easily. And if i press each note individually, you can hear how the shape changes differently per node pressed. So that's the difference between this per voice lfo and the global one which would just the global one would just do one sweep of the shape here and not one per voice

 So there we go so something like this [ Music ] and we can spice it up by going alpha one to the shape of oscillator, two [ Music ] and to space it up even more. We can do source design velocity to the frequency here of lfo1. So basically, the envelope now controls the frequency here. The speed of the lfo, which controls the shape, yeah lots of different, interesting modulations going on here, [, Music, ] and here's a cool sound that i want to show you where i'm using the lfo here to control the pitch of oscillator number one and using an Envelope to kind of bring in the lfo slowly [, Music ] and on this patch, i'm using multiple sources to control the resonance giving it

 Let'S fire it up and see what it sounds like right here we go. First: try [ Music, ], [, Music, ], [, Music ], so [, Music, ], oh yeah. This is the sort of sounds that i really like: [, Music ]. I really like that sound it's! It'S reminiscent of a sound that i have over on the arturia polybroad, which is also this kind of gentle interesting, sound, [, Music, ], okay

 I haven't owned any dsi since no sequential since so quite excited to test this one out here. So let's unbox it. So if the title of the video didn't give it away, it's the take 5 from sequential and i got it from perfect circuit - it's a store over in the us.
