Pulled the trigger on this Prophet Rev2 desktop. Hooking it up to my Arturia Keylab Mkii 49. Sounds amazing. Only other synth I’ve owned is a Korg Minilogue and I didn’t love it so I sold it, and have just been using Arturia Analog Lab and V Collection 8, but this Rev2 is amazing

New Synth. Totally blown away. Amazing.

In this price range I would probably get a Prophet Rev2, which is an amazing synth that will keep you busy for years. Vintage synths like the Juno or DX7 are cool, but they have a lot of maintenance issues. I would start with a modern synth (unless you find an amazing deal for one of those).

I'm looking to buy my first synthesizer and I'm looking for something that's versatile that I could have for a few years and is max $1,500. I really likes synths like the Juno 106 and Yamaha DX7 but I'm not sure if those would be the right synths to get at this time. 

I've been using logic for years and the built-in synths and I understand the basics of a synth, so really I'm trying to move from digital to physical synths. 

I've been researching but I'm having a hard time finding and narrowing down ones that would be good for my first synth.

Suggestions for my first synthesizer

 If you like, or values the gated sequencer can either be free running like this or work on a step-by-step basis in key step mode, [, Music, ]. I think this is one of the more unique and compelling features of the Rev, and you can accomplish all this with the menus, but the software is a lot more. Usable Rev also has an arpeggiator pretty standard stuff, the old mode, if you like, and the standard arpeggiator options. Okay, let's move on to sound design, [, Music ]

 This is the desktop version which has exactly the same features as the Rev with the keyboard, but it's slightly cheaper and takes up much less space. I prefer this one because you can put it on a stand in an angle and I can hook up any key. Any MIDI keyboard that I want to it. If I want a small one that works well and if I want to go bigger, I can whatever keyboard you do choose to hook up, make sure that it's velocity and after type sensitive, because these can be modulation sources in the Rev

 I want using the mod matrix, but there's another third envelope that we can use to route anywhere else. So, let's, for example, take the pitch of oscillator of the oscillators as a modulation destination. You can affect it either positive or negatively and with delay. You can have the effect be applied a while, after you press the key, so standard stuff and there's a variety of destinations here now beside that you can also loop this envelope

 So the idea here is that I can choose a preset. Let'S say this one and then let's take another one, take this guy, for example, and then either mix so have steps that are mixed in between them or morphed in between them. So let's say take this one, for example. So it's sort of, if you look at this as the starting point - and this is the end point - you've got all the sounds in between

Review of the Prophet Rev2 by Dave Smith - is it the analog poly synth for you?

TL;DR I want something with responsive knobs and sliders that’s gonna be able to give me nice warm and interesting chord/pad sounds plus fat funky bass-lines and fun melodic runs. 

 I’m not as big on the computer-y, science-fiction-y kinds of sounds that the cs seems to produce because I don’t really make techno or EDM… although I am interested in the roughness and gritty quality of many sound effects and bass-lines found in a lot of contemporary music today. I have a reface cp coming in the mail because that Rhodes sound is a staple for me, but I need something else more synthesizery to play around with making sounds for anything from cool textures(pads) to fun bass-lines and slick melodic ear-worms. I wanted to spend about 300-500 dollars but after research it looks like maybe the Deepmind 12 would be the best fit for what I’m looking for, and possibly the most fun? I’m thinking I should save up for that. Is there anything that isn’t on my radar? I probably would want to get something with polyphony for a first synth and don’t want something like the reface dx because it doesn’t seem quite as intuitive even though the sounds can be nice

Edit: I went to Sam Ash today to see what they had to try out. They didn’t have a deepmind on the floor but I played a prophet rev2 and I could tell I would be able to get the sounds I want from that thing… and way more than I would ever need. I also played a Minilogue because I know how popular they are and it makes complete sense. That thing was extremely intuitive, cool sounding, and fun even if it wasn’t producing the exact sounds I’m looking for

 For instance, I read a lot of positive comments about the Prophet Rev2, but then I’ve also seen videos from people who I share similar tastes who say they didn’t like it, and I know from experience that minority opinion of people I’m familiar with is way more valuable than a consensus of strangers. So I don’t think I would trust reviews or scores from a site like the one you’re proposing.

I've been working on the site quite a bit in hopes of making it more useful for the synth nerd (amongst other types of musicians), but here's the rub: 

**I want it to be useful beyond being _"that website that shows you what gear pros are using."_** 

You know how BeerAdvocate helps you figure out if a beer is good, or Rotten Tomatoes helps you decide what movie to watch? I'm trying to get as close to that as possible with Equipboard.

Thank you all SO much for taking the time to comment, and sharing insights on the things that are important to you when shopping for a synth &amp; other gear. Couple of interesting takeaways are 1) I had no idea the 5-star rating scale was generally so disliked, and 2) I had no idea Rotten Tomatoes was generally so disliked!

  So this in on paper something that's not clear, which leads me to believe it's a sonic thing, and I get that.  So I've tried listening to some videos and such and I'm pretty sure I can rule out the Rev2 as being too similar to some of things, the P-5 and the P-6 having the VCO's that are so critical.  But between the P-5 and the P-6 I'm having a bit a trouble really distinguishing things.  Can someone help me out here?

 I promise you I'm not. This is really an honest opinion of the synth here. Really, I can't I can't fault it for anything, so, if you're into, if you're, looking for a kind of analog, mono synths to have fun with to learn or just to make professional tracks with or to interface. With your your rack, I mean really, you can't go wrong like I, I can't I can't I'm trying to think of something

 Next, let's talk about the general sound design and synthesis features. So again you have everything you would expect from a standard subtractive synth, your two oscillators, the classic mock filter spring reverb, all the basic stuff, LFO adsr, it's a perfect blend, in my opinion, of just the right amount of tools without going overboard. Obviously, you can add extra things like a third oscillator ring, modulator a second filter, etc, etc, but then you're getting into kind of voyagers high performance synthesizers. So this, since I was really kind of this middle ground, where it's fun and playable, but at the same time flexible enough for you to be able to do most patches that you can think of I've

 So, let's quickly go over that, so the sound is not about analyzing frequency responses or looking at waveforms on a chart, it's more the pure sound that you subjectively perceive as you play, and then you have the feel, which is the feeling of the keyboard and the Sliders and knobs and the general kind of one to oneness you get with the scent as you're playing it, and then you have the look of it, which is just visually what it looks like and generally how you connect with it and then finally, you have vibe, Which is kind of hard to describe, but it's just a general overall vibe you get from the synth again. The section is going to be very subjective and kind of wishy-washy, so bear with me here all right. With that in mind, the grandmother here definitely hits all four of those points. In my opinion, and honestly, I haven't been this excited about a synthesizer in a long time, at least not from a new synthesizer, so I'm super excited that mogh decided to take this risk

 It has this playful kind of inviting character to it so yeah. I really love that, and that's very intangible and hard to describe, and if you're gon na read the spec sheet, you're not gon na get that from that you're. Not probably gon na get that by watching videos like really you just have to try it out and play it and you'll see what I mean. Hopefully it's very inviting, I guess the best word to describe it

Moog Grandmother Review

  I can't get past having separate sequences as parts to a song. It always feels disconnected and hard to polish a full track.  I feel like Ableton *might* help with seeing a track laid out and help with mixing but I'm worried it would add a whole new huge layer of complexity when I'm already still trying to figure out so much.  So would it be easier to work inside a DAW when it comes to mixing and song structure?  Did I mess up by starting to learn music dawless?

 So I'm getting an audio signal out here and bring you into the pitch mode. So it's quite interesting, [, Music ] that we mentioned there's also the high-pass filter here, so we'll drop that in there come out of there and into the oscillator 1 inputs, [ Music. ], so we got an extra high-pass filter, neither the high pass filter nor the internal air modulator. Now it's a shame: [, Music ]

 And of course that is one thing that means you can do. Is you can create three note chord, [ Applause ]? You have to make sure, obviously you're being very careful with the levels because of the cp3 mixture is going to blow out, though I can show you what [ Music ], which is kind of fairly grungy. Isn'T it so, let's get on to the filter? This is the filter section here in a sort of fetching lime-green and, as is usual, what we'll do is we'll start with a let's just: do a sawtooth into the filter and give it a sweep [ Music ]. You [ Music ] and let's go that classic move kind of Blatt that sort of brassy

 You know it the full wet mix which is kind of cool. That'S quite nice! Another thing that you can do: that means I've got the anchor of the spring reverb here because you get separate half of it and I'm going to try and bring that into the pitch pod of oscillator 2. Sonic LAB: Moog Grandmother Synthesizer Review

 You have to try really, really hard to make it sound bad. It's great for leads and bass. It can do it all. I've now seen them on stage here locally in Colorado 4 times

 I came home the other day and my 11 year old had the headphones on and was dancing and bobbing through some jingle he's put together using the sequencer. He loves it. I have a feeling I may need to get him his own. Ha!

After resisting buying analog hardware all these years --due to great sounds from software, I'm quite happy with the purchase of this synth for bass duties. It gets a wide variety of sounds, but most importantly to me, there's finally a real solid bottom end to my pieces. I've tried using all kinds of plugins on VI's, ducking the bass with kick and other percussion, but in the end, could never get this foundation. Even at lower levels, the bass lines have always come through, and translate to smaller speakers as well

 I checked for missing parts and could not find the power adapter inside the box. I was kinda excited when I received the product but it killed the hype because I could not power my Moog and had to look for a 12V adapter separately.
