Pulled the trigger on this Prophet Rev2 desktop. Hooking it up to my Arturia Keylab Mkii 49. Sounds amazing. Only other synth I’ve owned is a Korg Minilogue and I didn’t love it so I sold it, and have just been using Arturia Analog Lab and V Collection 8, but this Rev2 is amazing

New Synth. Totally blown away. Amazing.

In this price range I would probably get a Prophet Rev2, which is an amazing synth that will keep you busy for years. Vintage synths like the Juno or DX7 are cool, but they have a lot of maintenance issues. I would start with a modern synth (unless you find an amazing deal for one of those).

I'm looking to buy my first synthesizer and I'm looking for something that's versatile that I could have for a few years and is max $1,500. I really likes synths like the Juno 106 and Yamaha DX7 but I'm not sure if those would be the right synths to get at this time. 

I've been using logic for years and the built-in synths and I understand the basics of a synth, so really I'm trying to move from digital to physical synths. 

I've been researching but I'm having a hard time finding and narrowing down ones that would be good for my first synth.

Any suggestions are really helpful :) thank you!

Suggestions for my first synthesizer

 If you like, or values the gated sequencer can either be free running like this or work on a step-by-step basis in key step mode, [, Music, ]. I think this is one of the more unique and compelling features of the Rev, and you can accomplish all this with the menus, but the software is a lot more. Usable Rev also has an arpeggiator pretty standard stuff, the old mode, if you like, and the standard arpeggiator options. Okay, let's move on to sound design, [, Music ]

 This is the desktop version which has exactly the same features as the Rev with the keyboard, but it's slightly cheaper and takes up much less space. I prefer this one because you can put it on a stand in an angle and I can hook up any key. Any MIDI keyboard that I want to it. If I want a small one that works well and if I want to go bigger, I can whatever keyboard you do choose to hook up, make sure that it's velocity and after type sensitive, because these can be modulation sources in the Rev

 I want using the mod matrix, but there's another third envelope that we can use to route anywhere else. So, let's, for example, take the pitch of oscillator of the oscillators as a modulation destination. You can affect it either positive or negatively and with delay. You can have the effect be applied a while, after you press the key, so standard stuff and there's a variety of destinations here now beside that you can also loop this envelope

 So the idea here is that I can choose a preset. Let'S say this one and then let's take another one, take this guy, for example, and then either mix so have steps that are mixed in between them or morphed in between them. So let's say take this one, for example. So it's sort of, if you look at this as the starting point - and this is the end point - you've got all the sounds in between

Review of the Prophet Rev2 by Dave Smith - is it the analog poly synth for you?

TL;DR I want something with responsive knobs and sliders that’s gonna be able to give me nice warm and interesting chord/pad sounds plus fat funky bass-lines and fun melodic runs. 

 I’m not as big on the computer-y, science-fiction-y kinds of sounds that the cs seems to produce because I don’t really make techno or EDM… although I am interested in the roughness and gritty quality of many sound effects and bass-lines found in a lot of contemporary music today. I have a reface cp coming in the mail because that Rhodes sound is a staple for me, but I need something else more synthesizery to play around with making sounds for anything from cool textures(pads) to fun bass-lines and slick melodic ear-worms. I wanted to spend about 300-500 dollars but after research it looks like maybe the Deepmind 12 would be the best fit for what I’m looking for, and possibly the most fun? I’m thinking I should save up for that. Is there anything that isn’t on my radar? I probably would want to get something with polyphony for a first synth and don’t want something like the reface dx because it doesn’t seem quite as intuitive even though the sounds can be nice

Edit: I went to Sam Ash today to see what they had to try out. They didn’t have a deepmind on the floor but I played a prophet rev2 and I could tell I would be able to get the sounds I want from that thing… and way more than I would ever need. I also played a Minilogue because I know how popular they are and it makes complete sense. That thing was extremely intuitive, cool sounding, and fun even if it wasn’t producing the exact sounds I’m looking for

 For instance, I read a lot of positive comments about the Prophet Rev2, but then I’ve also seen videos from people who I share similar tastes who say they didn’t like it, and I know from experience that minority opinion of people I’m familiar with is way more valuable than a consensus of strangers. So I don’t think I would trust reviews or scores from a site like the one you’re proposing.

I've been working on the site quite a bit in hopes of making it more useful for the synth nerd (amongst other types of musicians), but here's the rub: 

**I want it to be useful beyond being _"that website that shows you what gear pros are using."_** 

You know how BeerAdvocate helps you figure out if a beer is good, or Rotten Tomatoes helps you decide what movie to watch? I'm trying to get as close to that as possible with Equipboard. 

Here's what I'm working with, just to give some examples:

UPDATE: I&#39;m still reading (and re-reading) all the feedback. Thank you all SO much for taking the time to comment, and sharing insights on the things that are important to you when shopping for a synth &amp; other gear. Couple of interesting takeaways are 1) I had no idea the 5-star rating scale was generally so disliked, and 2) I had no idea Rotten Tomatoes was generally so disliked!

But seriously thank you, I am humbled by the nice comments about Equipboard. I will definitely think on all this, and press on and continue building the most useful gear resource I can.

Would love some thoughts.  Probably need to play some in person, but would love to understand more behind the designs and what they are good at.  Thanks.

  So this in on paper something that's not clear, which leads me to believe it's a sonic thing, and I get that.  So I've tried listening to some videos and such and I'm pretty sure I can rule out the Rev2 as being too similar to some of things, the P-5 and the P-6 having the VCO's that are so critical.  But between the P-5 and the P-6 I'm having a bit a trouble really distinguishing things.  Can someone help me out here?

 Korg links to a parts supplier on their website, but after emailing Korg they informed me they don't make any individual PCB's or parts available for the Volca series aside from a pot or two. Meanwhile I also have Volca Bass -- my cat peed on it to act out against my girlfriend. I cleaned it with alcohol -- NEVER EVER CLEAN A VOLCA WITH ALCOHOL! The entire case became brittle, easily cracked, and literally started falling apart. Lesson learned! Meanwhile part of the envelope controls stopped working

The build quality on all KORG Volca products is pretty godawful and the technical support is basically ZERO

 It emulated keyboards quite well, remember for the time brass that organ more basis. But what I'll do if I just go back to this side? Well, let's actually listen to music box. You can see that the motion sequences is in place here and it's adjusting the parameters you can see because they're flashing. So if we now just go into program mode and I've got MIDI keyboard coming in here, which is actually the mini log and I'm playing the sounds from this keyboard - oh look, there's the electric piano

 The great thing about this little fella is: it also reads: dx7 system exclusive banks, so you can, if there are tons of these online and you can dump them straight into this, and that means you get access to all of those voices. What an FM sound like! Well, let me play through a few of the presets that come with it and you'll get an idea of what we're talking about so before we start quick explanation of the front panel and the memory locations as with all the Volkers you've got 16 step sequencer, and This little keyboard here, I guess, there's a couple of octaves, and this gives you all the function switches pressing. This button allows you to switch on and off all the various parameters inside there's also the ability to recall 16 memory slots, pressing the memory button and then just recalling which one you want will lie the sound associated and the sequence, but there are 32 sound locations In the volcker FM, which you use, which you select with this black knob here, so this is the first pang that sort of classic wiry sort of sound has load another one again. Fn is quite well known for sort of its Bell and ticky sounds, but it also does kind of quite nice, muted, stuff, and so the cabinet was very was favored by Lockheed Bethesda's

 I have to use the fader, and this is where there's something a bit odd going on, because basically you look at the MIDI chart, which is a little bit cryptic, as is a lot MIDI charts. It doesn't respond to velocity with note on so you can send velocity as a separate value or as a controller value via a controller keyboard, but not via the keys. So you kind of like killing quite a lot of the power of FM, because I think about FM that made it so popular in the first place was the sort of expressivity through velocity, because the FM synthesis algorithm allows you to kind of create an awful lot Of additional dynamics, so if we go through some of these other programs here, let me move the fader here. I could move it around

 You know the sparkles and the lows: it's got all of that FM goodness. The only thing that I think is a bit of a letdown is the fact that it doesn't respond to velocity over MIDI and that on MIDI note on and that really does kind of hamstring. I think the the creative potential of the FM sounds, but once again you know the Volkers are really affordable. Prices will scroll below they're usually ran out 120 quid other currencies will show

 As you try out the presets, you can experiment with the different knobs and quickly come up with unique sounds. if you wanna undo the changes to the preset, you just switch to a different one then switch back.  You have the power button as well as a 9-volt wall. Adapter input you'll have to order this adapter separately, and I absolutely suggest you do. The volca FM can run up of batteries, but it takes six. That'S right: six batteries to power the unit so make sure you turn it off after use, though there is an auto power off after four hours, if enabled over to the right
