Pulled the trigger on this Prophet Rev2 desktop. Hooking it up to my Arturia Keylab Mkii 49. Sounds amazing. Only other synth I’ve owned is a Korg Minilogue and I didn’t love it so I sold it, and have just been using Arturia Analog Lab and V Collection 8, but this Rev2 is amazing

New Synth. Totally blown away. Amazing.

In this price range I would probably get a Prophet Rev2, which is an amazing synth that will keep you busy for years. Vintage synths like the Juno or DX7 are cool, but they have a lot of maintenance issues. I would start with a modern synth (unless you find an amazing deal for one of those).

I'm looking to buy my first synthesizer and I'm looking for something that's versatile that I could have for a few years and is max $1,500. I really likes synths like the Juno 106 and Yamaha DX7 but I'm not sure if those would be the right synths to get at this time. 

I've been using logic for years and the built-in synths and I understand the basics of a synth, so really I'm trying to move from digital to physical synths. 

I've been researching but I'm having a hard time finding and narrowing down ones that would be good for my first synth.

Suggestions for my first synthesizer

 If you like, or values the gated sequencer can either be free running like this or work on a step-by-step basis in key step mode, [, Music, ]. I think this is one of the more unique and compelling features of the Rev, and you can accomplish all this with the menus, but the software is a lot more. Usable Rev also has an arpeggiator pretty standard stuff, the old mode, if you like, and the standard arpeggiator options. Okay, let's move on to sound design, [, Music ]

 This is the desktop version which has exactly the same features as the Rev with the keyboard, but it's slightly cheaper and takes up much less space. I prefer this one because you can put it on a stand in an angle and I can hook up any key. Any MIDI keyboard that I want to it. If I want a small one that works well and if I want to go bigger, I can whatever keyboard you do choose to hook up, make sure that it's velocity and after type sensitive, because these can be modulation sources in the Rev

 I want using the mod matrix, but there's another third envelope that we can use to route anywhere else. So, let's, for example, take the pitch of oscillator of the oscillators as a modulation destination. You can affect it either positive or negatively and with delay. You can have the effect be applied a while, after you press the key, so standard stuff and there's a variety of destinations here now beside that you can also loop this envelope

 So the idea here is that I can choose a preset. Let'S say this one and then let's take another one, take this guy, for example, and then either mix so have steps that are mixed in between them or morphed in between them. So let's say take this one, for example. So it's sort of, if you look at this as the starting point - and this is the end point - you've got all the sounds in between

Review of the Prophet Rev2 by Dave Smith - is it the analog poly synth for you?

TL;DR I want something with responsive knobs and sliders that’s gonna be able to give me nice warm and interesting chord/pad sounds plus fat funky bass-lines and fun melodic runs. 

 I’m not as big on the computer-y, science-fiction-y kinds of sounds that the cs seems to produce because I don’t really make techno or EDM… although I am interested in the roughness and gritty quality of many sound effects and bass-lines found in a lot of contemporary music today. I have a reface cp coming in the mail because that Rhodes sound is a staple for me, but I need something else more synthesizery to play around with making sounds for anything from cool textures(pads) to fun bass-lines and slick melodic ear-worms. I wanted to spend about 300-500 dollars but after research it looks like maybe the Deepmind 12 would be the best fit for what I’m looking for, and possibly the most fun? I’m thinking I should save up for that. Is there anything that isn’t on my radar? I probably would want to get something with polyphony for a first synth and don’t want something like the reface dx because it doesn’t seem quite as intuitive even though the sounds can be nice

Edit: I went to Sam Ash today to see what they had to try out. They didn’t have a deepmind on the floor but I played a prophet rev2 and I could tell I would be able to get the sounds I want from that thing… and way more than I would ever need. I also played a Minilogue because I know how popular they are and it makes complete sense. That thing was extremely intuitive, cool sounding, and fun even if it wasn’t producing the exact sounds I’m looking for

 For instance, I read a lot of positive comments about the Prophet Rev2, but then I’ve also seen videos from people who I share similar tastes who say they didn’t like it, and I know from experience that minority opinion of people I’m familiar with is way more valuable than a consensus of strangers. So I don’t think I would trust reviews or scores from a site like the one you’re proposing.

I've been working on the site quite a bit in hopes of making it more useful for the synth nerd (amongst other types of musicians), but here's the rub: 

**I want it to be useful beyond being _"that website that shows you what gear pros are using."_** 

You know how BeerAdvocate helps you figure out if a beer is good, or Rotten Tomatoes helps you decide what movie to watch? I'm trying to get as close to that as possible with Equipboard. 

Here's what I'm working with, just to give some examples:

UPDATE: I&#39;m still reading (and re-reading) all the feedback. Thank you all SO much for taking the time to comment, and sharing insights on the things that are important to you when shopping for a synth &amp; other gear. Couple of interesting takeaways are 1) I had no idea the 5-star rating scale was generally so disliked, and 2) I had no idea Rotten Tomatoes was generally so disliked!

But seriously thank you, I am humbled by the nice comments about Equipboard. I will definitely think on all this, and press on and continue building the most useful gear resource I can.

  So this in on paper something that's not clear, which leads me to believe it's a sonic thing, and I get that.  So I've tried listening to some videos and such and I'm pretty sure I can rule out the Rev2 as being too similar to some of things, the P-5 and the P-6 having the VCO's that are so critical.  But between the P-5 and the P-6 I'm having a bit a trouble really distinguishing things.  Can someone help me out here?

All in all I have some criticisms of the design: you have to remove the rear panel with screws to access jumper settings including line-level or guitar-level as well as speed (fast & slow, both of which are nice), so as of now I'm leaving the wood sides on but the back off and open so I can easily try things out 😬 Would've made more sense to have switches on the front or rear side. Stereo seems like it would be a nice and no-brainer but the implementation isn't great and it sounds a bit more "fake"and thinner to my ears. I definitely prefer the mono setting.

Just got the TC Electronic June60 mk2 pre-order in (clone of the famous Juno Chorus effect). It sounds really sweet on my synths which are not a Juno haha. Adds a nice color and texture

 This one goes from 32 to 416 to port amento to all the things that you would expect from a perfect replica. The only real difference, as I said, is the fact that we've got round the back. We'Ve got USB input and a MIDI in you DC 9-volt, so you can't actually pair it from usb. But what this does allow is MIDI input to the synthesizer engine and MIDI output to an external you know, DW or whatever

 This is an MS 20, to all intents and purposes, that's what you're getting I mean sure the build quality is a little bit less robust. I mean the knobs can be a bit wobbly, but for this kind of price, you're not going to get a tank all. I can say is: if you want the ms-20 sound, this is what you need unless, of course, you want to spend a couple of grand on an original and it sounds pretty much the same anyway. 

 Version of the synthesizer, the only other major difference is that it's got the addition of a USB and a MIDI port to allow sort of hooking up to external DOW. Let'S take a look at it, so here it is, it's got a three octave, not mini keys. That'S or somewhere in between they're quite thin and long, no velocity or aftertouch just basic MIDI functionality. Here we've got the pitch and the momentary button here for extra control, but these aren't ordinarily mapped or anything as ever with the ms-20 you've got to patch them to the destination of your choice

 But if we only use the noise as the main oscillator, we can make this a little bit more crisp by doing a little feedback. So let's go out of the phones out and go into the total input. Again, we could use the modulation to really shape the filters to hit how we want, if you're like going for that for that quintessential, prince gated reverb type snare, splash sound there. It is by just adjusting the decay time by a little bit

This is a re-release of the ms-20 from 1978 and it is the most legendary semi-modular synthesizer that arguably set the standard for semi-modular synthesizers and it's full-size uh. You know the mini was cool, but we got full-sized patch cables here and you also got some more new caveats like there's new colors, now, there's blue, there's white there's this green or khaki color they're, calling it it actually reminds me of mash or like good morning. Vietnam, but we got midi in so you don't have to rely on the hertz per volt anymore. You also got usbn, so you could do usb midi sequencing if you wanted to, and then we also have both of the filter styles in here packed in here uh

 Let'S go from the cv out into the high pass filter, cutoff frequency and now we're getting more if we play with our decay here, it's like more static or more open hi-hats. So look that whole time we were recording right. I mean this is the studio at reverb. So actually i was sampling

What's So Great About the Korg MS-20?

big sound, love that bass. Still learning the patch cables. It's heavy and I wish there were a case available for it. But a vintage synth at this price is unbeatable!!!

 If you don't know about this, i didn't know about this. Really i've sat a few ms-20s. I did a video with luke from korg a while back, but luckily enough i got to spend an hour or two with it yesterday, and it really is about these two filters. Two analog filters, one a high pass and one a low pass

 To me, that is angry and [ Music, ] tunable, [, Music ]. So that's just one oscillator saw wave with that. Characterful low-pass filter dropping it down, but we've got the high pass filter as well [, Music ]. You can hear that taken off all the bottom, so we can create
