Brass: Birmingham is an economic strategy game sequel to Martin Wallace' 2007 masterpiece, Brass. Birmingham tells the story of competing entrepreneurs in Birmingham during the industrial revolution, between the years of 1770-1870.

As in its predecessor, you must develop, build, and establish your industries and network, in an effort to exploit low or high market demands.

Each round, players take turns according to the turn order track, receiving two actions to perform any of the following actions (found in the original game):

1) Build - Pay required resources and place an industry tile.
2) Network - Add a rail / canal link, expanding your network.
3) Develop - Increase the VP value of an industry.
4) Sell - Sell your cotton, manufactured goods and pottery.
5) Loan - Take a £30 loan and reduce your income.

Brass: Birmingham also features a new sixth action:

6) Scout - Discard three cards and take a wild location and wild industry card. (This action replaces Double Action Build in original Brass.)

The game is played over two halves: the canal era (years 1770-1830) and the rail era (years 1830-1870). To win the game, score the most VPs. VPs are counted at the end of each half for the canals, rails and established (flipped) industry tiles.

Birmingham features dynamic scoring canals/rails. Instead of each flipped industry tile giving a static 1 VP to all connected canals and rails, many industries give 0 or even 2 VPs. This provides players with the opportunity to score much higher value canals in the first era, and creates interesting strategy with industry placement.

Iron, coal, and cotton are three industries which appear in both the original Brass as well as in Brass: Birmingham.

New "Sell" system

Brewing has become a fundamental part of the culture in Birmingham. You must now sell your product through traders located around the edges of the board. Each of these traders is looking for a specific type of good each game. To sell cotton, pottery, or manufactured goods to these traders, you must also "grease the wheels of industry" by consuming beer. For example, a level 1 cotton mill requires one beer to flip. As an incentive to sell early, the first player to sell to a trader receives free beer.

Birmingham features three all-new industry types:

Brewery - Produces precious beer barrels required to sell goods.

Manufactured goods - Function like cotton, but features eight levels. Each level of manufactured goods provides unique rewards, rather than just escalating in VPs, making it a more versatile (yet potentially more difficult) path vs cotton.

Pottery - These behemoths of Birmingham offer huge VPs, but at a huge cost and need to plan.

Increased Coal and Iron Market size - The price of coal and iron can now go up to £8 per cube, and it's not uncommon.

Brass: Birmingham is a finely brewed sequel to one of history's most industrial economic games. It offers a very different story arc and experience from its predecessor. 2. Pick games with theme! - I was amazed at how quickly she became invested in and learned Robinson Crusoe, because everything just made logical sense and was exciting to her. It made the game FAR less intimidating. Also helped that it was co-op, so she was losing WITH me, not against me

  I've tried to convince her that learning the game can be part of the fun/experience, and the first game doesn't have to be perfect, but she hates to feel like she doesn't understand something and really suffers from fear of inadequacy. I have a window of about 20-30 minutes and if I can't get the game to click with her, she'll start to become disinterested. 

 If it wasn't my Birthday she would have given up. She couldn't get over the fact it was just dice on a flat board and places to put stuff and numbers that do things UNTIL it finally clicked that the dice are people building/defending the city, and you are 'recruiting' them for your cause. And we have to defend the city every round before we start building. Etc

So my girlfriend is very smart, and she has the capability to learn quickly and pick up some heavier games, BUT I only have a small window in which to win her over. She clearly gets anxiety over the idea of learning a new game through fear of feeling stupid and not understanding it.  I've tried to convince her that learning the game can be part of the fun/experience, and the first game doesn't have to be perfect, but she hates to feel like she doesn't understand something and really suffers from fear of inadequacy.  Granted getting your engine going in round 2 can be better and more rewarding and get you more points, the brewery's it says be careful when developing breweries remember beer is required. So if you have no access, it can be devastating to your long-term strategy. I know tiles with that cannot be built during the rail era. I know figuring how to expand your network at the beginning of the rail era, can be baguette difficult for beginners

 Do this instead and here you're kind of like wow, I'm just gon na lose, and I don't find that as entertaining now. Fortunately, this is not a long game. It'S like a two-hour game. I feel maybe a little bit faster when you play people who know what they're doing so if you are like well, I guess I'm not gon na win

This is definitely a preference thing which is kind of like it make, because I think some people are like me when it comes to these preferences and that some people, like others, like I like a game that says, here's a bunch of options, pick which ones are Best brass Birmingham says here's some options, but you better find the right one or you're gon na lose lek always makes me feel like I'm in a straightjacket and that's how this game was. It has like a mechanism which, for some reason, I felt so difficult to remember where you discard a card, no matter what action you take, even if you pass and it's just just from remembering to do that - was kind of a pain but the as your hand Of cards goes down, you are lowering your options and so at the end of the game, I'm like oh, I would like to do that. Don'T have the card for it. I'D like to do that can't do that

Inis: I bought it for the pretty cover, and am annoyed that they somehow released an EVEN PRETTIER cover for the 2nd edition. But this game is one of my favorite meshes of tactics and social deduction.

 Just try to keep your score positive and don't worry too much about it. Or find the optimal strategy (immigration!) and stick to it.

Canvas: Chicago represent. Simple, but really easy to teach and makes for a great time-passer.

Brass Birmingham: My first pandemic purchase. Every game I've played of it has been an edge of your seat "oh god did I shoot myself in the foot" ride to the finish.

Sometimes games let us down, other times they're mind blowing without us expecting anything from them, and rarer still are the times that games are even more excellent than we can possibly anticipate!

For me a prime example of this was **Firetower**, the first time I played **Firetower** I had no real expectations for the game but sat around the gaming table that game became a magical experience!

Our group doesn't mind gotcha games, as long as they are short and sweet, but **Firetower** really shone for us. What games have surprised you like this??

 The poker chips for the money is a nice touch but also completely unnecessary.  -Final Thoughts-  Brass: Birmingham is a tough economic game. It is an open sandbox and doesn't hold your hand by giving you any directions. It is completely up to you to figure out how to make the cards, board layout, and other players actions work for you

 At the end of the first era will be a scoring. After scoring you remove all canal network links and all Level 1 industries and then you start all over in the rail era. When the rail era ends you score one more time and whoever has the most points wins.  -Components-  Full Disclaimer: I have the Deluxe Edition of Brass Birmingham so my Components may be different

 In the end, whoever scores the most points will be considered a business man/woman for the ages. Will it be you?  Number of Players: 2-4 Play Time: 60-120 Minutes  -Setup-  To setup the game, you first have to make the HUGE decision of the day side or the night side of the board. This makes no gameplay difference but it is what you will be staring at for the next 2 hours so choose wisely. Then you shuffle the deck of cards (using specific cards for your player count) and lay out the merchant tiles

 It is an open sandbox and doesn't hold your hand by giving you any directions. It is completely up to you to figure out how to make the cards, board layout, and other players actions work for you. This is a heavy game in my opinion and not for the light-hearted. I love the art direction in this game but I can't figure out why they would make the score track and the income track the same track

Making it Big in the Industrial Revolution - Board or Bust Review

 Played back to back on our usual Weds game night because the first game ended so fast. Then played two games on TTS with some friends living abroad we are slowly getting into board games (mwahahaha) - ended up with them having an argument because one of them kept blocking off everyone's routes hahaha. I'm amazed by the depth of strategy from such simple ideas and actions. I also love that someone different has won every time we've played, which indicates intuitive design if new players can be winning

What Did You Play This Week? - (March 15, 2021)

One I would like to mention is Brass: Birmingham, played it three times now and each was better than the last one and have a feeling that the fourth is looking promising.

I used to dislike Robinson Crueso. It was sold to me as this huge crafting game with loads of options and immersive story and I was left dissapointed. Now after 2 years I tried it again and have played 5 matches already.. I love it and know I see what that person was saying, but back then it just seemed like a disappointment and not that immersive at all. 

Is there any games like this for you? What did you enjoy more with the second time?

What's a game you enjoyed more with the 2nd time?

 You always want to do a lot of things, but only two actions, money is tight, loans can be punishing...

We found the rules to be surprisingly easy, since we expected a really heavy game with lots of exceptions, and even though we had a couple of minor mistakes, I believe the ratio strategy/rules complexity is brilliant. Not a lot of exceptions, pretty straightforward, everything brilliantly connected to the theme, and still so much room for strategy and brain burning.

 The main board is just a beauty. Photos and videos somehow just don´t do justice to how pretty and thematic it is. Actually, it even seemed rather ugly in some videos, but hell no, it is one of the most beautiful boards I've seen, and you really get the feeling that you are getting your money's worth components wise, not just because you really like the game and you kind of accept that price tag, as happens more and more nowadays.

What Did You Play This Week? - (May 31, 2021)

**Century Spice Road** (1x5p): I like this dry little euro. Didn't win this either, finished 3rd. Informed the other players of a rule they did not know (you can do the action on your card more than once if you have sufficient spices)

**Age of Steam** (1x4p): first time playing this. We used the Germany map. I won! By a reasonable margin! I was playing my lucky color pink. Really enjoyed the gameplay of this one

**Caverna w/ Forgotten Folk** (1x3p): taught this to some neighbors with whom I played Agricola recently. I won with the Silicoids, 114 pts, with a 6 peaceful workers strategy. Second were the Humans with 104 pts, with a Cooking Chamber strategy. Third were the Mountain Dwarves, with 70ish, no clear strategy

What Did You Play This Week? - (October 04, 2021)

 I went into this game thinking I wouldn’t be doing much table talk but as it turns out this one creates all kinds of interesting discussions based around other players’ actions.  Optimal Player Count –  This is one of those rare games that I think any player count is optimal and here’s why. At 2 players the game is scaled back a bit as you cannot use the full game board or the full amount of cards. This is done to create that sense of interaction/competition with the other player

Disclaimer – Skip to the end for the “Final Thoughts” to get a snapshot version of this review  2-4 players, Competitive  Overview-  This game is all about properly managing your economy. You will be building up various factories, breweries etc. and trading those goods to specific border cities on the game board to try to achieve the most victory points possible. It’s all about finding the best and most efficient way to do this to maximize your points

  Components –  Excellent quality components here. The cards all feel nice and the tokens are of a good quality with some wooden squares for the iron and coal tokens and some wooden beer barrels that are shaped like little barrels. The cardboard stock they use for the player board tokens are thick and feel very sturdy.  Setup/Takedown –  The setup takes quite a while for this one

 When you go to 3 players another section of the main board opens up as well as more cards added to the deck to draw from. And finally at 4 players the full board is open as well as all the cards to draw from. Personally I think you will get the same experience from the game no matter which player count you go with, with the only big difference being the game length. The more players, the longer the game

Is spirit island easy or challenging? Can it be "beaten" or easily solved so you can pretty much always win? 

We've narrowed it down to these because they seem a good step up in complexity which we both want to try, and seem to last significantly longer than an hour, (75-120 min is kind of the range we're going for). So questions:
