Best Gravel Bikes of 2022 - GearLab

 Quality is pretty good handling, is pretty middle-of-the-road. It'S a little bit more relaxed and stable and confident than a full-on road bike, but it is definitely not like kind of like the new-school of gravel bikes or like a like a salsa warbird isn't like that, so pretty pretty middle-of-the-road. But that said I mean they do. Do it pretty? Well, yes, yeah! I truly enjoyed riding this bike

 It'S a very versatile bike, but at the same time you could have taken that Santa Cruz brand off and put any other brand on it and there wouldn't be any complaints. It just doesn't feel like it deserves the Santa Cruz name or that it deserves that price tag with it. It'S like a Honda CRV and it like really nice wheels on it or something yeah so, and you mentioned the ride quality I mean I actually found a little bit on the stiffer side of what I was expecting it to be.  I think that's enough yapping about the bike, because it is a beautiful day here and we have some stuff to ride here. 2020 Field Test: Santa Cruz Stigmata CC gravel bike review

 So for me, if i want to convert this to a road bike, i would probably put a bigger chain ring on it and a smaller back cog on the rear end and probably convert it to a different wheel set with some. You know 30c tires or 28c tires something narrow fast, and you know it really becomes two bikes in one. What i would kind of say on this bike that is different from some of the ones around it is that it is a little more expensive than you know the asparal or uh. You know line price with a hack mx, but it's a santa cruz and you are paying more for that name

 I said earlier, if there's something that you guys suggest i should put on here: leave it below. Now we are dealing with a standard easton, cockpit aluminum stem aluminum bar, i'm probably going to want to change this out. At some point i feel the the stock bar is a little wide for me. It'S a little kicked out

 So here's the back one and here's the front one. I haven't had any issues with them, but if you do want to save a little bit of weight, you can get rid of that that lever with a different it might be called maxwell light or something i don't know, look it up, but you could there's definitely Way to be saved, if that is important to you, despite my issues that i've had with sram brakes on mountain bikes, these have been awesome. No issues haven't had to bleed them once consistent lever feel and really really good quality break. The pads have lasted no issues

 I wish that was black. I might actually change that up and get something in the off season here, but not the end of the world, as we can see on the top tube. This is the stigmata cc badge for 2021, which you will also see on the head tube itself. You can see that red lettering, which signifies the cc variety versus the c on some other bikes, but in this case the stigmata c does not exist in its current form

2021 Santa Cruz Stigmata - Long Term Review

 I know the complaints aren't too bad um, just those contact points and i think honestly, a lot of that is just personal preference, so it might work better for you than it worked for me. [, Music, ], [ Applause ]. So overall, this is an extremely versatile bike, excels off-road uh and i would say that it's very capable on road, so santa cruz is a bit of a bourgeois bike brand and their prices reflect that. So i feel like they're, never quite a good value proposition

 Stigmata would be a great great choice for that: [, Music, ] [ Applause ]. So i picked a nice little spot here with the cuyahoga river flowing, where i'm going to give you my my complaints about this bike because any bike, it's got, it's going to have its advantages and its disadvantages. I'M going to start off here with my biggest complaint. Thus far is on the bottom of the bike here: uh on the underside

 That'S coming off the front tire so last but not least, would be road riding. I did a whole another video on this on why i sold my road bike. Uh and part of the reason was that the stigmata makes for a fantastic, or i should say you know a more than adequate, certainly capable. You know, borderline great road bike so like

 Some short little climbs, you know, did some obstacles and stuff, and you know, even though they've tweaked, the geometry on this uh. I would still say that it would make for an excellent cyclocross bike. Uh again, with the caveat that i don't have a lot of experience. Cyclocross racing, but it's uh super agile

 To compensate, the cockpit has gotten shorter across the board, and you tend to see 80 or 90 millimeter stems across most sizes. All of this means that you are less pitched over the front of the bike. That is the key thing. When you look at the reach figures

 For what it's worth, this bike is built with a two by drivetrain with a 4831 crank set matched with an 11 to 34 cassette. For the type of riding I enjoy and in particular riding here in the southwest of the Uk, a 2 by setup makes a lot of sense, though you will spend the majority of your time in the outer ring and rolling terrain. It's really nice being able to dump down into that little ring when you come to the bottom of a steep climb. If versatility is what you're looking for on a gravel bike, there's no denying that a double setup definitely makes sense

 With a shorter stem but a longer reach, the overall fit of the bike will be largely the same, but when it comes to steeper trend, you are just not quite as far over that front wheel. The slacker head angle also makes a really big difference in rocky terrain where has less of a kind of nervous tendency to jitter around rocks and it just feels more like a sled as you plow through. None of this is new, and none of it should come as a surprise. Mountain bike geometry has been moving this way for years now, and the kind of convergence between gravel and mountain bikes has been a long, long time coming, so I fully expect that again

 As you lean over in, you know, kind of tighter corners, you get this quite unnerving transition between the smooth section and the tread on the outside. Likewise, the tread is also pretty much useless in the wet trails we typically find here in the Uk. There's no shoulder knobs, they're very easy to clog up in mud, and if there's anything approaching off camber, we'll call them thrilling. Now, if I set the bike up tubeless and I played around a little bit more with pressure, I'm sure I'd be more satisfied with them, particularly on harder surfaces

 You are a fool if you buy the black bike. Now there's further details in our original diverge video, and I'm not going to repeat them all here, But as a brief refresher, the geometry of the new diverge was largely inspired by trends in mountain bike geometry. Over the last few years, mountain bikes have on average, gotten longer, slacker, and lower. With reach numbers increasing, head tube angles slackening out, and bottom brackets getting perilously low to the ground, the diverge follows suit and across most sizes, you see a roughly 10 millimeter increase in reach, a slightly slacker head angle in most sizes

2021 Specialized Diverge Review | A Tremendously Capable & Versatile Gravel Bike

On my Specialized Diverge I run Panaracer Gravelking SK, SS, or Slick depending on the ride. For proper gravel rides I'll run the Gravelking SK in a 38, on something like Little Elbow - Big Elbow the Gravelking SK in a 43 is my go to, the SK's definitely roll pretty well on tarmac, but for our roads / pathways early season or jumping on some smooth trail the SS is awesome. I have a few sets of wheels so I'll have a road/gravel set up going and then a gravel/trail set up.

I just got a 2021 Trek Checkpoint ALR5 and plan on using it mostly for road riding along paved roads with some travel on gravel roads in the mountains of western Canada during the summer. As I come from the world of mountain biking, I'm keen on tubeless and I'd like to swap out the stock Bontrager 770c x 40 Gr1 comp tires for something more efficient but still durable. I'd love to hear some recommendations for good-value (no need to break the bank) tires that will perform well on pavement in the extremes of the Canadian mountain environment (often there's loose gravel on pavement, temperatures ranging from 0°C to 35°C).

Best tires for paved and gravel mountain roads

I'd say no - you can buy something just as good or 95% as good for cheaper. Seller doesn't seem like they're in a rush to sell if they started the price at 1500. I'd look in bike shops for entry level gravel/all road bikes Trek Checkpoint/Specialized Diverge and they'd be brand new under 1500.

 There's no strain on your back and neck, and actually the the extended hoods and the flared bars give you plenty of positions to sort of hold on to when you're getting in. And I've found that I've been able to do some pretty big efforts on this bike on the tarmac and riding back in from the trails. And it's been. It's performed admirably in its current setup, so definitely something that helps with this is that carbon frame

 Now that would be eliminated a little bit with a one by group set, but you have to consider, is that worth it for losing that range if you're riding on road or off-road completely loaded up with bags and for me, it's not really worth it. and you do tend to come to live with the chain slap a little bit. So this isn't the Di2 model, which does mean you get these slightly bigger huds at each end, but actually on-road and off-road they feel really good compared to what you might get on a road bike, and they kind of because of the bike's biggest shape. I feel like they're less noticeable and they give you a really comfortable holding position

 So my way of riding that specific type of riding I do has been a real testing ground for this bike in its current setup. Can it excel at riding on tarmac? And can it excel riding off-road So I'll talk about the road riding side of it first. This is a really, really comfortable bike to do extended bits of road riding on. It's long, so it feels super stable when you're riding along, and it's quite high as well, and it's very easy to sit on the drops and feel quite comfortable

 Now this bike uses Specialized Fact 9r carbon frame, so this is the comp model. It doesn't use that top end 11r, but it's still very good and it's a very it's a stiff frame. It is performance focused. It feels like you can ride it really quickly when you're riding along the road, and it's worked very well for me now
