The Samsung Smart TV platform on the KU6300 feels similarly simple, but it has enough features to satisfy. It doesn't quite have the visual polish of LG's WebOS, but it's easy to jump into and doesn't overwhelm you with features.

  The LG on the other hand seems to have a lot more settings than the Samsung that I can tinker with to optimize the image. The LG image is obviously spectacular (once you turn off the clear motion soap opera effects), and the interface of the LG is good (basically the same Samsung, just arranged differently). The LG motion-detecting remote seemed like a gimmick at first but I actually have come to like it and I use it now so much that sometimes I try to use it with the Samsung remote forgetting that only the LG has it; however, I do not like the design of the LG remote itself, it rolls around too much and doesn't look as cool as the Samsung remote. Also, I love the TV mount for the LG (the OTW420B), which holds it nearly flush to the wall

 I also must say I like the remote-- it is sleek, slim, and functional. The sound is just ok, better when put into movie mode. Like the LG, I really like the thin trim of black around the edge of the Samsung.  The reason I must take off two stars though is that the picture adjustment options leave a lot to be desired

 When watching HD broadcast TV (which shows in 1080i where I am located), it makes some digital-like blurring/boxy effects, especially around image edges, that don't look good until you turn on the "digital clean view" option, which still doesn't fully solve the problem. When watching 1080p content, the image looks good, but there still seems to be a bit of an edge enhancement effect that I don't like. I should say that I despise artificial effects like edge enhancement and the soap opera effect, but this TV doesn't have an edge enhancement option even though it is apparent that it is doing it-- so I turn down the sharpness and that seems to take away most of the mild fuzz that it adds around edges of letters and such, but not all of it. I also think that turning off the "auto motion plus" does remove the soap opera effect, but I'm not sure if it raises juddering issues (like when watching Interstellar or 4K content on youtube)

Not as good as other options

 It's fine for what you pay. But I do want to focus on the smart TV software.  This is my first time using a smart TV with really good software. The Tizen OS is very well-designed

Great Smart TV Software, with Some Issues

 Snap together, secure with screws. Bang you're done. 3-minutes. Power on, welcome screen guides you through connecting with your cable provider, connect to home wifi, registering with mfr, etc

 Navigation of the setup utilities was seamless and easy. When I wanted to do something, I was able to do it with zero calls to customer service. Hats off to Samsung for that milestone. Some people have made comments about the remote, so I was apprehensive

 And, talk about SMART!!!! When I hooked up my DVD player to the 2nd HDMI port, the set recognized this and asked me on screen if I wanted to switch. Very cool, very user friendly!  Update- 06-27-16. I have just undergone a week of needless aggravation over the Amazon Prime Video app that's cost this rating a star. Let me explain- after two months of working perfectly, the app quit loading and just froze the screen

 Shouldn't have been. The remote has almost none of the mind-numbing array of buttons usually found on these devices. It is tiny as a result. I was able to figure out all the functionality easily, and when you do make a mistake an on-screen prompts tells you what to do

 The top and bottom sections would be slightly out of sync. It would only happen for about 2-5 sec, but still not something you want to see. I've just yesterday replaced the HDMI cable and haven't seen it since, but didn't occur in any kind of regular interval, so only time will tell. As well, occasionally the sound to my sound bar would get a touch out of sync

 The difference is "stunning" to say the least. It's close to "theater" quality surround sound.  The tiny remote that comes with this set is poorly designed and seems "chintzy" to say the least. It looks more like a toy than a functional device

 After explaining the situation to them they shipped me a replacement without question and without any cost to me. My card was not billed even though by that time the price on the unit had gone up $50 there was no extra charge, nothing. Two days later an Amazon special team delivered my replacement unit and removed the defective one. They even offered to unbox and set up the new one for me which I declined since I already had a friend coming over to help me, but I thought it was really nice that Amazon would do this

 The tiny selector ring in the center of this remote makes it easy to select the wrong menu by mistake if as stated before, your fingers don't work right. I suspect this could also be a problem for folks with "large" fingers.  Perhaps if I couldn't afford the soundbar for this, my new review would be lower, but for now I would say that it merits 4 stars. If things change and I encounter any other problems in the future I will once again amend my review

AMENDED REVIEW - BOTH REVIEWS

I am calling Samsung Customer service to have them take a look at this TV.  Great picture quality; easy to set up but we have noticed that there is no oomph to the audio.  Ashamed to say I own 6 Samsung TVs and this is the only one with an audio problem.

CON: The only issue I have, and the reason I don't give it 5 stars, is there is an issue with its wireless connection. It connects to my wireless network, content plays fine, and 4K looks great. But if the TV has been off, it won't automatically connect

If there is one con, it's the refresh rate; it could definitely be better, but you only really notice that on track and field events or certain football shots. I've never really noticed it being a problem on movies or any other sports. It's especially good at picking up golf course detail; if the feed is good enough, you can almost feel as if you are there

If you're on a budget and want a large TV, you'll have to spend a bit more than if you were getting a smaller size. However, there are a few budget-friendly models available in a large size. Something like the TCL 85S455 is a decent overall TV that doesn't cost much and has a good smart platform. The Roku interface is user-friendly and easy to learn if you haven't used a Roku product yet. Its remote doesn't have a mic you can use for voice control, but you can download the Roku app on your phone if you want to take advantage of the voice assistant features.

In terms of picture quality, it has a fantastic native contrast ratio for deep blacks in dark rooms. Its black uniformity is also remarkable, but as expected for a budget-friendly TV, it doesn't have a local dimming feature to improve it. It doesn't get bright enough to fight a ton of glare, but it has decent reflection handling if you have a few lamps in the room.

The TCL roku tv is the best interface on earth for cord cutters. Why? Because once you hook this tv to a good antenna, you will not only get a great picture but a menu.  Its basically like having basic cable without a monthly fee. The tv will pay for itself in 12 months. About the sound, it is high end sound. You can use headphones and a sound bar but the sound is really good and immersive

 The sound quality is poor. You’d have to buy a sound bar to get greeter volume. Also commercials are so much louder than the program I’m watching. I also set up payments and they tried to take the payment 5 days earlier then they were supposed too!, and then the payment was unsuccessful because I didn’t have enough money in my acct to pay it

Review of tv

 A few times it wouldn’t turn on at all. I realized at that point that if the Roku function broke on this, that it would be totally worthless and I would be unable to turn it on to use. The remote control is the same type as you get for a freestanding Roku device that you hook up separately to a smart TV. It just does not work very well, and I have a feeling the TV is going to have a relatively short life before it just won’t work

Good value but…

 I had a ROKU device attached to the LG so the choice of a ROKU TV was a given. I do like the O.S. and user interface

 I set that to theater and a clear more dynamic sound arrived. I don’t know why TCL would set a default to a sub optional setting, but they did. Of course the product literature was of limited value, just had to experiment. I like it so far!

 There is a button on the front bottom that allows control of the device if you lose the remote. I bought a spare non OEM remote for $5.00, I would recommend it. The remote combined with the ROKU interface has a lot of options in spite of the remote only having a few buttons
