The Salomon Speedcross 5 has long been known for its insanely aggressive outsole, a feature that forced almost every competing shoe brand to imitate it. Salomon has improved this by making the rubber on the sole even stickier so that it acts like glue to rock &mdash; even wet rock. They also significantly widened the forefoot of this notoriously narrow shoe by a significant margin, which increased both comfort and wearability for those with wider feet. This change also improved from past versions by adding a larger landing platform. In addition to making the arrow-shaped lugs larger and farther apart for easier mud shedding and increasing the durability of the already beefy upper, these changes make this the best version of the Speedcross in at least the last six years. The shoe still fits like a glove, with the foot securely locked in place with Salomon's quick lace system; it feels supremely comfortable right out of the box. We've been running in these shoes for more than eight years now and saw our love for them diminish as they got narrower and tighter as time went on. However, this newest version has won us back over.
We once again love to run in this shoe, but it still has some features that seem a bit outdated. Our biggest gripe is the 10 mm heel-to-toe drop, combined with the thick and high-off-the-ground heel counter. It's not only unstable, especially when running downhill, but a bit of a relic of a bygone era in shoe design. These days it's also pretty heavy on the spectrum of ever-lighter trail shoes. It also retains its reputation for running a bit warm and short on breathability, which means these shoes are better used for higher altitude mountain runs where the air is cool. While many other companies have put serious effort into improving the traction on their shoes, our side-by-side testing shows that the Speedcross 5 simply grips the best. If you enjoy running off-trail or in the mountains where the ground is often wet, snowy, muddy, rocky, and steep, this is an ideal choice, with traction unrivaled by any other shoe.

Switchback Travel

The Speedgoat above is a nicely cushioned go-to for well-established trail networks, but it suffers on particularly soft terrain like mud and snow. In these conditions, you’ll want a full rubber outsole (the Speedgoat uses a combination of rubber and foam) with relatively long and widely spaced lugs that bite into the ground with each step. Salomon’s trail-eating Speedcross 5 sets the standard for this category, combining massive 6-millimeter arrow-shaped lugs and a supportive and snug-fitting upper for impressive control at speed. Tack on a thick midsole, single-pull lace system, and sturdy yet still reasonably light chassis, and you get one of the most capable trail designs, whether your run takes you over snow, sand, or wet leaves and thick mud.

But while the Speedcross is hard to beat on soft terrain, it’s not a particularly versatile shoe. The tooth-like lugs and aggressive build are overkill on easy trails and gravel roads, and the tall stack height can feel tippy on uneven ground (plus, shorter lugs offer better traction on rock). For off-trail exploration, we’d recommend a more planted, rock-ready design like the Sense Ride above or Bushido below. But for wet and rugged forest paths, the Speedcross is incredibly purpose-built, even down to details like the anti-debris mesh upper and gusseted tongue.  I would like to know how they've held up for you in the comments below anyways moving on to the midsole. It is their energy cell branded midsole, and it's designed to be very responsive and it's very light as well, and even when you're out running you do kind of notice the rebound on it and the midsole does go kind of up in our cups around the heel. Just to give some extra support and protection, but in combination with the ortholite insole, it really does add a whole other degree of comfort to this shoe and i have a lot of comfortable shoes. But i have to say this is probably one of my most comfortable shoes

So again, i would just go true to size and if you got wide feet they got you covered, salomon does have their branded scentsy fit support upper and that's all the zigzag lines you see here in combination with the lacing system. It does provide really good support for your foot and i'm not sure what exact material it's made out of visually

Virtually no braking period whatsoever and also the lacing system does a really good job of supporting your foot even uh, when you haven't really broken them in or had them that long. So i know that, lastly, the breathability - it's really nice, i don't notice my feet getting hot at all and a reason why i didn't go with the gore-tex ones is just where i live

Salomon Speedcross 5 | Review & Styling

 Has these really big lugs that start at the end of the toe and work their way all the way to the heel and the pattern of these lugs is in such a way that it's going to offer traction whether you're going up or if you need braking Traction going down a hill and the rubber on this outsole is what solomon calls their contagrip again, my first time using it, but i can attest to how grippy this outsole is. I had no slipping issues whatsoever. I went over some wet rocks, some wet roots, plenty of mud, so job well done on the outsole. Now i'll talk about how it fits and how it feels so

 As far as price of the shoe, when i first had it sent to me, i had no idea what the price was and i grabbed the shoe and i looked at how heavy duty it is and how aggressive the outsole is, and i thought that the shoe Must be at least 200, so i was really shocked when i looked up and i found that the price was 170, canadian or 140 us, i think for a shoe that fits so nice and performs so well in poor conditions. That'S a really decent price and, if you've ran in solomon's or view of experience of speed, cross 5 comment down below and let me know what your thoughts are and if you want to see another review on a trail shoe, i did the cloud ultra.  All right. It was way more comfortable for me to hike in light-weight kind of like running, focused juice compared to heavy rigid boots. Now part of that is probably largely because of my environment here in Southern California, it's a different terrain than a lot of other places. So if you live somewhere else, this may not apply to you as much, but for me I find that I prefer to be agile and be weighed down, even by sacrificing some of that rigidity

 You can tuck all of the lace into and then you're good to go. These I was worried before I got these that these cinches wouldn't stay tight, that the ratchet the latch thing would kind of come undone on its own. I have had zero, loosening and, like I said, I've got miles in these. It'S not like I've done one test, hike and - and that's been, that these have been through the wringer and yeah all of the seams and seals are holding really well

 I wore just some old, like cross-training shoes that were the ones I had played volleyball in and that since gotten new one, so I wasn't worried about him getting ruined or anything like that, and I found that when I was hiking in those, it was way way Way more comfortable for me well has a terrifying spider with an egg pouch gross. It'S got bees on there too. All right. It was way more comfortable for me to hike in light-weight kind of like running, focused juice compared to heavy rigid boots

 They protect my feet from everything. I'Ve kicked through stomped through run into they're, good for jumping and landing in. They have good arch support. They'Re comfortable, oh yeah they're, in my opinion, the perfect shoe to hike in especially for a day hike, and I have trail running them as well and they're built for that

 But it is, you know it's just a good, solid training shoe and guess what I prefer a little bit of weight in my training shoes, because when you put on a really really lightweight racing shoe you just it's a little bit of a men, Oh game. But you just feel so much faster and as far as the price goes, one hundred and thirty dollars is what I paid. However - and I don't - I actually don't understand how they're able to price point this shoe at one hundred and thirty, because I feel like it's really well constructed, there's a lot of material. That'S why it way is eleven point: three ounces, there's a lot of material in this shoe, and so I'm just trying to figure out how Salomon is able to pull off that price point

 I could feel it today because the stack height of the heel is just a little higher than most shoes out there. It is a heavy shoe, it is a heavy shoe. My version size, eight is eleven point, three ounces, so basically three hundred and twenty grams. So it's heavy and that's okay, that's! Okay! It'S not a racing shoe, although I might use it for the vertical K, race and Aspen going up the snow

 But thank you Salomon for keeping it pretty reasonable, especially compared to some of your other shoes, but also camp saver calm. If you could, maybe in the next two years three years, if you could shed like one ounce or one and a half ounces, I think that would be a nice like challenge to shoot for because I don't mind the weight. But I think that would be pretty amazing if you could keep the general luck, action and overall protection that you will receive and running in this shoe on the rocky trails, while still just reducing the weight. Just a teeny tiny bit

 Let'S talk midsole now, so we have boost here in the midsole with what appears to be a top sole of light strike. It'S quite tough to say, though, where the light strike ends where it begins. I'M not going to chop this shoe up, because i just can't bring myself to do that. However, the materials are laid out

 Perhaps it's providing a little bit of longevity to the boost material and one thing to note: the insole that's supplied with these or the sock liner. If you want to call it that is one of the thinnest that i've seen barely there almost sort of paper thin. Really don't expect any considerable cushion from that insole? I suppose you could throw a slightly thicker one in to boost the underfoot cushion. I don't think this is a shoe i'd really select for out and out speed, work or high-paced effort

 So there's something strange there going on in terms of the perhaps the last that they've used in terms of the upper, but just a little bit too much material for my liking. It meant that we had a little bit of bunching around the toe box area. Actually, quite similar to some asics shoes, i've tried out recently where it's just way too much upper around this section of the shoe. It has to be noted that i have a regular width foot

 Almost i used a couple of the holes that are within the tongue to actually hold the tongue in place using the laces and now that's just a distant memory. I'Ve got to say overall, the upper fit here is quite unlike the sl20 or the adi zero pro. Actually, i find it a little bit too roomy in comparison to those shoes they fit like gloves where this one fits like a glove of someone with a larger hand, just a little too much upper for me in the 11.5 uk

 We'Ve got a nice like mesh operating. It'S not like the cellar mesh that you have in the adios pros and the adi zero pros. Nor is it like the one that you have in the adios fives but uh. The upper is maybe like a dual layered upper, but it's not that bad, maybe a little bit more warmer than the other ones, but, as you can see also on the sides, it does have that cellar mesh material as well according to most places the shoe in A size 9 comes in around 240 grams
